typical ios upgrade. It frustrates me when they break functionality. Home sharing from my iTunes library to my third gen ipad now broken. Music app loads the blue circle but unable to select any artists, songs, playlists now. All greyed out. Home sharing in the videos app works much better but the music part is not working. dont get me wrong I am all for new features but I detest it when they fail to test and break existing features
Are you running the latest version of iTunes? It is 11.4 IIRC. If you haven't updated iTunes you should probably do so.
Yeah I am on the latest. It was working on ios 7 with itunes 11.4. A bit glitchy but it worked more or less fine. I will be interested to see if it works on the iPhone 5s but alas I am still waiting on the ios8 update
Have you tried signing out from Home Sharing in Settings, then signing in again?
This often solved my problems since iOS 6.
I had the same problem. I have multiple Apple IDs, and it turned out that iOS 8 had replaced my Home Sharing account with my iCloud account. Going into Settings -> Videos (or Settings -> Music, changing one automatically changes the other) and logging in to the correct Home Sharing account solved my problem immediately. The Shared option reappeared in the Videos app, and I could watch any of my Movies or TV Shows I wished. In fact, Home Sharing in the Videos app seems to work much better than it did under iOS 7.
We had to log in and out of Home Sharing under Settings... Videos but then also had to reboot the iPad. THEN the Shared heading showed up in Videos.

I have been having issues with my two Apple TVs (2nd & 3rd Gen) in conjunction with Home Sharing. I have run through the steps in the Apple Troubleshooting document on Home Sharing:

I've done all the steps twice. I've restored my 2nd Gen AppleTV to no avail. Seems like something related to the latest iOS8 Apple TV because the issues started then. Have you heard anything that has worked to resolve the matter?
Brian Oak was spot on. I had the same problem. Restarted the iPad, went into Settings --> Music and reset the HOME SHARING ID & Password. Everything worked perfectly afterwards.
I used the following process to get my working:
1. Make sure you are using same iTunes account. (i.e. in iTunes, On your iPhone, or other devices).
2. Make sure under Home Sharing your are using the same iTunes account.
3. Make sure on your iPhone or Other devices you login using the same iTunes account.
That should do it...

After login on all Devices with the same Apple-ID and no home sharing is visible on iPhone and iPad. Rebooting Mac, iPhone and iPad solved the problem in my case.
Scottyboy99, unless you were one of the lucky few, apple didn't break Home Sharing with ios8... It's BEEN broken. For years! Large or small library's, it doesn't matter. I've been railing at them since ios6 to fix this. I think it's time this 'feature' is just removed completely. Ridiculous! I have always been an apple supporter and enthusiast but they've been dropping the ball in a major way since just before Jobs died.
BTW, rhetorical question: why is it that Remote has always worked fine and darn near instantaneously while Home Sharing is such a disaster.......
Thanks that helped. For some reason in video player my Apple ID for iCloud syncing was put in place of the Apple ID that I use for iTunes purchases. The correct Apple ID was still signed into the store and music.
I have a similar issue but my home sharing connection is sporadic and when I do get connected I can watch any movie in my library EXCEPT the ones I actually bought from iTunes!...hows that for moronic irony?
