Hi,
Since I have updated my iPad to iOS 8, the installed dictionaries are neither accessible nor downloadable. I just see progress circles, but nothing happens.
Other dictionaries, that haven't been installed (with the Cloud symbol), are downloadable and can be deleted.
Has anybody the same issue?

I have a similar issue. when I highlight a word and select define it displays no definition found. This is with Wi-Fi on or off. It worked in iOS 7 with or without Wi-Fi.

in ios8 the ibook dictionary is not working when i define a word.
did any one solve.
Trying to use the "define" function (and so the dictionary function) in other parts of the system makes no difference at all.
For the dictionary being used not only in iBooks, this might be a syste-wide issue.
Suddently the dictionaries reappeared...
IIf you if you are still having this problem when trying to define a word, click manage in the bottom lefthand corner, and download the dictionary of your choice.
As I have already written, it was impossible to re-download the dictionaries that have been on the system during update.
but now now it seems to work...
I've got the same issue: after updating my iphone 5s and ipad 4gen to ios8 dictionaries became not accessible, but have not disappeared from ibooks completely. No chance to manage or re-download them. Do not work neither with wifi on nor with wifi off. It's very frustrating. "No definition is found" and that's it... Also, some of the dictionaries, like Oxford British and Oxford American, are dupliketed.
It is embarrassing that "define" doesn't show anything. The default dictionaries are all duplicated in the "manage" dialog and they don't have any option to try at all. Suddenly, reading foreign books became impossible. Any update on the issue? (no sudden fix happened to me)
This morning I've noticed that dictionaries on my iPhone started functioning normally (even without restarting device; however, restart was not helpful the other day)... But no sudden changes on iPad so far.
I tried that and the American English dictionary along with several others only displays a circle that doesn't allow an action when you touch it. Other dictionaries, such as the British English one, have the iCloud icon and allow you to download them.
After IOS update the dictionaries that have been downloaded previously (e.g. British and German ones) have the same circle allowing no action next to each. No access to them along with a few other ones. Accessible only "newcomers", such as Russian, Korean etc. Actually, it seems like those dictionaries that have already been installed are duplicated. Bug...
Dictionaries are here, but do not activate seamlessly when asking for the definition of a word : please , Mr cook, do something as fast as the new A8, since this is rather annoying
I Know what you mean. In my case this bug is not only annoying but frustrating as well, since I need to study a lot these days. It's also a waste of time to check over and over again whether the dics got fixed on iPad the same as they did on my iPhone...
"Apple dictionary" is dead as well, rather ironically. I've looked up earlier discussions and it turns out, this is a chronic post-update issue for Apple. Is this because, notoriously, Americans don't need foreign languages?

JJust activate of those dict. that you do not need and who's a small cloud ... And all those dead circle will reactivate ... be patient for the multi dict downloading it takes a while ...
