Photos out of order in Events after iOS 8 update

For what it's worth (and for whatever meaning, if any, someone can make of this): I have an iPhone 5s and an iPad Air 2, each running iOS8.1.2 and each synced to the iPhoto (v.9.6) library on my iMac running Yosemite 10.1.1. Yes, my Events are chronologically scrambled in the Photos app on each iOS device, but only up to the point in time of the first sync on each device. Subsequently-created Events in iPhoto on the iMac do appear in correct chronological order on each iOS device. Interestingly, since those devices are about a year apart in (physical) age, the point where Event-scrambling stops is correspondingly different on each: on my iPhone 5s, Events are in correct chronological order beginning in November 2013... on my iPad Air2, they are in correct order as of October 2014.

I found a workable solution for me.

Ok - so Faces and Events are now hopeless on the iPad. But Albums seems salvageable.

Like Events, Albums doesn't sort properly on the iPad anymore. But at least it seems pretty clear what's going on: the iPad seems to show the Albums in the order in which I created them in iPhoto on my Mac. It may be the same with the Events, but obviously it's not feasible to delete and re-create hundreds of Events just to create them in the "right" order. However, with Albums this route seems feasible. I only use Smart Albums as my albums, meaning that in order to create an Album all I need to do is enter a couple of smart criteria and I'm done. Also, I can live with just creating a couple of dozen Albums as opposed to hundreds.

So: I deleted all my Albums and re-created them in the order in which I want the iPad to show them. Each (smart) Album typically only needs a couple of criteria (the criteria I typically use are "Event title contains [X]" and "My rating is [Y]"), so it didn't take me more than 10 minutes.

I then first synced no pictures at all to the iPad, then re-synced only the new Albums, and they're now showing in the right order. I no longer sync any Events to the iPad.

Not ideal, but I can live with it.

Most importantly, I now know to be afraid, very afraid, of what Apple will do to my photos in future - I'll never do any OS upgrade again until I know exactly what Apple has messed up this time.

Apple is dead to me... what a bunch of losers for not being able to get something as basic as this right.

Seriously this has got to be a trivial fix to the Photo app - i don't get why it is taking so long!

Just updated to IOS 8.1.3.

Problem remains the same.

It's now since october that I can't use my iPhone6 and iPad Air2 to view fotos.

I have 560 Events saved on my mac.

Could never believe something like this could happen.

They were still ignoring the problem.

Thanks to Till for trying the update. This is soooo disappointing! Hard to believe a simple sort to end a lot of frustration for folks who use events in iPhoto is not fixed. I still will not upgrade to iOS8 until something is fixed here... This problem is the first time where I really feel Apple has lost some mojo... even more now.

They - meaning Apple, although I'm beginning to feel like THEY are some alien species - are NOT going to amend this. Simple as that. Not going to happen and as to why - the Lord knows. It's obviously too complicated for us paying public to understand ...... and that's not meant to be a rant, Apple Support Moderators, so don't remove my comment please. We all know there is something wrong and we are all unhappy that we are being kept in the dark over this. Much as it goes against the grain now, my husband has just bought me a new Macbook Pro 15" for my 70th birthday. I love it but I simply have no confidence in Apple now.

I have found albums to be a workable solution as well. I can reorder albums in iPhoto and the iOS app follows the order following a sync. Not sure why the events issue can't be fixed, but albums work great for me as an alternative. Albums also seem to provide much greater flexibility than events alone. You can combine photos from various events into the same album and include only the photos from an event that you want to. You also have the flexibility of ordering your albums the way you want them. I have mine in reverse chronological order. Have just over 9,000 photos in iPhoto and they all sync to my iOS apps on iPhone and iPad.

Is there an easy way to create say 40 albums mirroring my existing 40 events? Thanks!

Creating albums is a way to fix it, that's right.

But as I switched from Windows to mac a had a one to one teaching and they told me to create events.

This would be the way apple wants their customers to sort the fotos.

They told me not to work with albums because synchronising albums has some disadvantages:

- you get a huge list of albums

- you get no preview on your mac

- you can only sort them manually- no automatism

- it just takes one click to move one album out of order

I think I move back to folders as I did with windows

They are sorted alphabeticly after the sync

I am using Aperture, I have over 32,000 photos perfectly organized in a little over 1,300 events.

After 3 or 4 months, I finally bit-the-bullet and created an album for each event. It took me about 2 hours stretched over a few evenings. Each event now contains an album within it (actually underneath it). That Album contains all of the photos that reside in the corresponding (parent) event.

Once I got in a rhythm it really wasn't that bad. It was matter highlighting an event, CMD-A to select all photos, clicking on the event name, CMD-C to copy the event name, CMD-L to create a New Album, CMD-V to past the Event Name into the Album Name field. The selected photos automatically get added to the new album (just make sure "add selected items to new album" box is checked in new album dialog box). Rinse-and-Repeat all of those steps for each album.

Albums sort perfectly on all iOS devices and as a HUGE bonus I can now search by Album name on any iOS device and quickly locate any album.

Remember both Aperture and iPhoto are going to be replaced with Photos for OS X in the near future so we may find ourselves having to re-conform. For me it was worth the time to restore functionality on iOS devices now and if need be I will spend more time re-conforming for Photos for OS X.

I have all my photo set up in projects not events. Should I make and album for each project ??? Would this not double the number of photos on the hard drive.

Sorry- my mistake. I have projects as well (not events) so it will definitely work. Not to worry about doubling your hard drive usage an album only contains pointers (i.e. shortcuts) to the photos that reside in the projects. In fact if you delete an album you will see that your Aperture trash will contain the deleted album but no photos. In fact, (if you wanted to) a single photo can appear in many albums- just like creating several shortcuts to a single file on your computer.
