Q: Photos out of order in Events after iOS 8 update

I have an iPhone 5s that I just updated to iOS 8.  I sync photos from my Aperture library on my Mac, which show up as a "Events From My Mac" album under "Albums" in the Photos app on my iPhone.  In iOS 7 and before, events synced from Aperture would show in reverse chronological order, which made sense.  Upon updating to iOS 8, all the events are in a random order.  I have events from 2008, followed by 2010, then 2009, then 2012, then 2008, etc...

Has anyone else run into this issue?  I know that I'll probably have to resort to telling iTunes to stop syncing photos, delete the "iPod Photo Sync" folder from inside the Aperture package, then re-sync all the photos, but before I go through all that trouble, I was hoping someone might have an easy fix.

OOh guys and gals......  They just ain't gonna do anything about it,are they? I went into my local Apple store in Norwich(UK) yesterday and got the usual polite smile, raised eyebrow and silence. I have two iPads, an iPhone 6 plus and a 5, and A 13" macbook pro which my husband is up dating to this years 15" and i wonderful why I am staying with a company that had done this to me and thousands of others.

I just put a case in to Apple on this.   The tech was "surprised" when he tested it on his iPhone.

My suggestion is EVERYONE put a ticket in.  (IMHO)

Yes, they are always surprised. They can get an Oscar for method acting.

Haha, you guys are a scream :-). Werner's right though - they always act surprised. They're good at it. It must be part of their early training. A job requirement.

By the way, I'm not sure if anyone said it clearly, yet: No, the 8.1.2 update did not fix the problem. No update is going to fix the problem, because it is not a problem. For Apple. It's part of Apple's evolution in media handling.

If it's a problem for you, maybe there's a photo organizing app that does what you want. There are quite a few out there, some free, some not. I haven't tried any of them, but I plan to. One that looks promising is Photo Manager Pro ($2.99). It's gotten some ok reviews. If I have a chance to try it, I'll let you know if it sorts photos better than Apple's native app.

    Hi Everyone,

I FOUND OUT HOW TO FIX THIS ISSUE!!!

Heres what you need to do in Aperture or iPhoto i bet your photos are created as folders/projects.

transition all those projects and create Albums. once you have your albums organize them as you had them when they were projects.

now go into iTunes and sync your device. you will notice that your albums should be in order the same way they appear in Aperture/iPhoto

On your iOS device launch the photos app at the bottom select albums and under camera roll, my photo stream, etc below all of that you will see your albums in order . YES i can't believe its finally there. and to top it all off the search function now works to find your albums.

    Good luck everyone.

    Hi Chrisjy2005,

How would you "transition" to album from my events?  Would I actually have to go to each event and select all and create a new album with the same name as my project?  I guess that would work.  Wow, what a mess this is.

Unfortunately yes you would have to create new albums for all of your projects in aperture/iPhoto . It's a mess and very frustrating to deal with. The only thing is the albums on your iPhone will not show up under events it will simply be under albums. For now this is the only solution which I can figure out.

I Called apple tech support and engineering was able to replicate this issue so now they are aware of this. No eta on when this will be fixed but hopefully in their next iOS update they will fix this bug.

I wish I could bet on whether Apple will fix this or not.

Creating new albums to replace lost events is exactly what we're all trying to avoid (or at least I am - I had well over 200 events). That's been possible from the first day the iOS upgrade eliminated events. It's just too tedious and labor-intensive. Also, you don't need to use iPhoto to create albums; you can do this right in the Photos app on your phone.

Aperture is going away, and the Photos app is now available on Yosemite. iPhoto on Mac will eventually go away, too. Events are no more. This is the direction that Apple is going, and it's why they won't be fixing Photos on iPhone.

I have started to make folders on my phone. Tedious yes but can be done. Bit confused   Do I delete the event after transferring to the folder or are there hidden consequences ?

I assume you're referring to the events in iPhoto on your Mac, since there are no events in the Photos app. There's no need to do anything to them; they don't cost anything or harm anything, and I expect they go away by themselves when you migrate to the Photos app on your Mac (I haven't upgraded to Yosemite, so can't say from experience). In any case, there's no direct way to delete an event in iPhoto; it goes away when you remove all photos in it. That just doesn't seem worth the trouble.

Um that's odd. I have events on my phone ( 6plus ). So as i make a folder, same name and then select from same name event, it then drops them in the folder quite happily. Then when I sync phone and mac i wondered whether it would be ok to delete on Mac, thus reducing Events gradually on phone.

Sorry not thinking right. I'm on a train hurtling from London to Norwich at what seems like 1000 miles an hour. I MEANT to have said " as I make an album ". Not folder.  I now have a third of my 50 events made over into albums which are alphabetical, so I want to delete the event on Mac and therefore on phone sync. It is tedious but it's one way until it's sorted out.

Hmm, definitely strange. Events disappeared from my phone when I updated from iOS 7 to iOS 8, to be replaced by "moments", "collections", etc., which didn't contain the same sets of images as the events I had organized my photos into. I have a dozen or so albums on my phone, but no events.

If you've got all your original events on your phone, why are you taking the trouble to move them into albums?

Oh, never mind, I forgot: the events are out of order in iOS 8. I still have them on my iPad, which I sync to my Mac where the events are in the iPhoto app. But there are no events on my phone. I don't sync it to iPhoto, I only back it up to iTunes.

Anyway, it's a mess all around.

Apologies for the delay in replying - lost signal on the train. I was going to say exactly what you said anyway - out of sequence. So,currently, I reckon if I turn all my events into folders, then I can delete the events on iPhoto - gradually - off my Mac when I sync to iTunes. Curious you don't have any events on your phone tho. Well, actually if you haven't ticked them on iTunes they wouldn't sync over as events to the phone. ??  I am just sooooo confused. Roll on when Apple present the next stage.
