Q: iOS 8 third-party keyboards not working

I've tried to install Swype and SwiftKey multiple times (restart, download, install keyboard, restart, try to use) with no luck. When I go into an app, such as Messages, and select the third-party keyboard all I get is a gray box where the keyboard should go. In some apps I just get a blinking cursor but no keyboard at all. I'm not connected to a bluetooth keyboard. If I remove the keyboard under settings then I get the standard and Emoji keyboards back. I can switch between those two just fine. It is only the third-party keyboards that I'm having problems with. I've having he exact same problem with my iPad (3rd gen). Any ideas?

I love the Swiftkey app and it's about time we get it but it's frustrating me that when I go to write something, no keyboard pops up. It's similar as to when your connected to a bluetooth keyboard. I've tried restarting the phone, turning off bluetooth, turning off Guided Access, screaming at Siri, and leaving it in rice (insert sarcasm) and none of these worked.

What worked for me was double clicking on the home button and closing out all of my open apps. It must be a glitch with one of the older apps that has yet to update to iOS8. Anyways I hope they fix it soon.

Closing out all of the apps did work. Now to narrow down which app is causing it.

For those still looking for a solution, here's what worked for me, and I haven't seen it posted anywhere else as of yet. I was not getting the gray box like some others, I was just getting the stock iOS keyboard, as if I had never installed SwiftKey. I had already done all of the following, but still could not get it to work:

Confirmed that SwiftKey had Full Access in Settings > General > Keyboard.

Confirmed that Guided Access was OFF.

    Closed ALL open apps.

    Rebooted the device.

After all that, still nothing. What I then had to do, was go back to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards, and Delete all keyboards other than SwiftKey. After that, it began working. The only ones I had were the defaults, English and Emoji. Not sure if you really need to delete both, or just English, but I did both, and now it works.

I've tried all of the above and while Swype and Swiftkey (I downloaded both to make sure it wasn't the app!!) work in Mail, Safari, and other apps, it won't work in Messages.  I can't get any of the keyboard to show up no matter how many times I add, remove, turn on/off guided access, reboot, etc.  Help!!

Have the exact same problem as glc_oc above... unfortunately this thread will not let me stay logged in on the second page, only on the first page for some weird reason.

same here. tried all of the suggested fixes here but still can't get any third party keyboard to work with Messages, Calendar, Notes or even Reminders. The third party keyboards I have (SwiftKey and Stack) only work with non-Apple apps like Viber, Facebook Messenger, etc. Help please!

    Try this:

-with the keyboard visible, go to the emoticons view as if you were going to insert an emoticon

-without selecting an emoticon, close the emoticon view to go back to the original keyboard display

This works for me every time. I only have SwiftKey installed.

Closing all apps doesn't work any longer. Even with all apps closed I still can't see a keyboard. And when I do, it is completely unresponsive.

My third-party keyboard is de-selected every time I go into an app that requires the keyboard. The default Apple keyboard appears and I must hit the globe button twice to bring back the third-party keyboard. There should be an option to select the default use keyboard to avoid having to go through those many steps to use the keyboard I wish, or let the last selected keyboard always appear when a keyboard is required in an app.

I Thought the updates fixed this but it has not. Anyone else still experiencing issues?

Still nothing with the 8.1 update. When I talked to the swiftkey support, they relayed this message:

    Hi Brandon,

This is a known issue we are seeing with IT management apps like Airwatch.

We are documenting this issue for our Development team to have a closer look.

    Thanks for your patience!

    Cheers,

    Josh
