iMac running low on RAM

My iMac (2008) is currently munching up RAM like a toddler in a candy shop. As I type I only have Safari open and it is showing between 10-16MB of RAM available. I have run Etre Check which has given me a full report but I have absolutely no idea what I'm meant to be looking for or how I'm meant to resolve it. I'm hoping there is a good Samaritan out there who is able to point me in the right direction. In general my machine works well and I have just cleaned up the hard drive where there were some link errors but I can't understand where all my RAM is going?

Here are the Etrecheck results:

With the exception of bits of MacKeeper left over your Mac is fine and not running out of memory at all. You need a better understanding on how Mavericks uses and reports ram usage in Activity Monitor OS X Mavericks: About Activity Monitor Mavericks uses all the ram available and will free up ram for apps as its needed.

THat at said you do have some outdated software. To properly get rid of MacKeeper see here http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/ Whatever the Pace application is you have remnants of it for older operating systems that you should probably get rid of. Also get rid of Memory Clean, you don't need it and it'll do more harm than good.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I've taken your advice and I shall report back shortly. I do recall reading somewhere before that Maverick utilises all the RAM available but completely forgot and I guess Memory Clean only muddied the issue so I have taken your advice and removed it.

Took me a while to locate the MacKeeper and PACE files but I reckon I've finally removed them. Hopefully now everything will run smoothly again and I won't be getting the freezes I've been experiencing of late. I haven't re-started yet but a quick run on EtreCheck looks like the errant/defunct files are now removed. Now all I need to do is free up some disk space. May remove my Windows partition and games - it's that or the baby photos. Who am I kidding - Bye bye baby photos!
