iOS 8 5GHz WiFi issues

Since upgrading to iOS 8, my iPhone no longer lists my 5GHz network in the list of available networks; the only network it shows is my 2.4 GHz one. My iPad Mini (still on iOS 7) and my MacBook Pro are picking up the 5GHz network just fine, so I believe this issue is because of iOS 8. Is this happening for anyone else?

IPhone 5s on 8.1 here. 5.0 disconnects constantly. Unusable since i got my XB3 dual band gateway with Xfinity back in March. Thankfully it automatically reconnects to 2.4. can't figure out if it's my phone or the gateway. Although my macbook is connected to 5.0 and never disconnected once. So i guess its the iphone. Frustrating because i max out at 50 mbps on 2.4 on my phone. On 5.0 i get around 80 mbps.

I have reset network settings and also re-booted the router (which is a BT Homehub 5) and the wifi problem persists. After the initial problem with IOS 8 I renamed the 5 ghz wifi channel and found that my IPad Air will connect to the 2.4 ghz channel but that the 5 ghz channel works only for a few seconds then drops.

Other problems include videos embedded within web pages working intermittently and mostly without sound. My wife's IPhone 4s, using IOS 7.1, works fine on the 5 ghz channel, as did the IPad Air with 7.1, so I'm pretty confident that the router doesn't have a fault, although I suppose that IOS 8 might be a problem for this particular router. As others have said here, it would be interesting to know which routers are being used by others with similar problems.

AT the weekend I'm going to try reinstalling IOS 8.1 via ITunes rather than by Wifi to se if a 'cleaner' install solves the problem. I can't help thinking that there must be a lot of Ipad users out there who don't have a clue about different wifi channels and are wondering why their supposedly fantastic tablets won't connect to the Internet.

The Ipad is the first Apple device I've ever bought and it was fantastic on IOS 7.1. With IOS 8 it gives the same frustrating user experience that we've all had with Windows and certainly doesn't justify the high price that Apole charges for the 'privilege' of using its kit.

I Have tried everthing. Reset network, clean install, reastart router, change DNS to 8.8.8.8, change wep2, etc. Nothing works for me.

the only thing that worked for me was to change

Preamble type" to "auto" in my asus router. Try that on your router, i think other models may have similar option. 5gz works smooth ever since i change that option. And i set channel 44 in router.

  • Preamble Type (Default: Auto). A long transmit preamble may provide a more reliable connection or a slightly longer range. A short transmit preamble gives better performance. Auto will automatically handle both long and short preambles.

Let me share a work around that has worked for me So far.

I Had an issue with my MacBook retina since I bought it last year and was not able to connect to 5Ghz high channels. Specifically on the 40mhz band, if I changed it to 20mhz it was fine, but half the speed for moving large data files around on my network. So I went back to the low channels like 44 but these frequencies don't pentrate my walls nearly as well and I have a week signal in the yard. The high channels I can walk 5 houses down and still get great speed.

Well the mac is in getting the wifi card replaced after this still was not fixed with yosimite, so I went back to the high channels at home. It's funny how all apple stores run Cisco wifi on high channels but only in 20mhz band or maybe they would see this issue also instead to recommend I buy a apple wifi router.

So today I picked up the iPhone 6 and nothing but issues on 5ghz. Tested 2.4 and seems stable. So then I changled the channle back from 157 to 44 amd now I'm finally able to complete a backup to the cloud without the wifi dropping. My iPad 2 mini retina is fine and the iPhone 5s seems fine on the high channels.

so I'm starting to think this is something again with high channels and 40mhz bandwidth.

oh before anyone mentions it yes I did all the standard scripting trouble shooting, resets, clean restores and bla bla bla.

So my request to all having issues is.

    1. What channel are you running? If above 100 have you tried the lower end of the spectrum? If not can you and report back if it also helped you?

    2. If your bandwidth on the channle is set to auto, or 40mhz can you try setting it to 20MHz and see if that helps and report back?

TiP some routers are able to run wireless N on 2.4Ghz and still uses the auto or 40Mhz bandwidth option in the setting. If your having these issues on a 2.4Ghz router try changing the bandwidth setting to 20Mhz like I did with the 5Ghz router. It might help you also. If it works please report back and let people know.

Im just looking for a pattern and sharing what helped me, then asking you to try and see if it helps you.

i Know, I know. This is not a fix. It's a temporary work around and apple still needs to fix this wifi stuff with the 5ghz range. It's a shame that great hardware and design is not starting to get a bad reputation just because of the software issues and not testing properly before releasing it.

if your reading this apple, it the mix of stable software, with hardware, simplicity and design that sells your product and was the reason I moved over years ago for that stable BSD kernel.i support enough to tech issues 70 hours a week and didn't want to deal with it at home. I admire the movement to bring everything together across all your hardware to be the same simplicity and the free OS updates for the Mac the last couple of years. But truth be told even junk unstable software is not worth being free. Please fire the guy responsible for this testing before release, and yes I have an idea on who this guys is also. Can you say apple maps?

Thanks Scott.J.D. Your post was very helpful.

    I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT610N Router, MacBook Pro and 2 iPhone 6s.

I've had the Router for probably 3-4 years, and probably the same settings for two years. I was also having speed issues on my iPhone. and I mean bad...like 250Kbps Bad. I've got Charter and it's supposed to be 60MBps wired.

I was getting fairly decent speeds (9-10MB) on my Mac but no where near 30 MB wireless as I might expect.

After reading your post I logged into my router and started playing with the 20Mhz vs 40 Mhz Settings. I was changing also between Mixed Broadcast and Wireless N only. Then I got this message:

    User uploaded file

I still had WEP security. I changed my security settings to WPA-2 and voila! I am now at some respectable speed. STill varies from 5-17MB but that's a bit improvement.

I am still unclear as to if the 20v40 setting will help me as I was unable to get consistent results.

So if you have WEP security, try setting to WPA2 and see if that improves things.

    Good Luck!

Great to hear Tony, glad it helped. I'm also glad you changed WEP since WEP encryption can be broken in under 20 seconds these days. Even if people are not having issues with with wifi I would highly recommend updating firmware and moving encryption to WPA- Personal.

I Would like to give my recent update. All my apple devices including MBPR and iPhone 6 are now stable connected to my 5Ghz router on a 40Mhz bandwidth at full speed. As I mentioned about draft wireless in a previous post they are not finalized. apparently Even after updating my wifi routers the updates were not taking completely and some updates included new updated draft drivers for the wifi radios.

So with one a simple reset to defaults fixed the issue. The other one required what's called a 30/30/30 reset. You can Google this for more information.

After fixing the routers and having the wireless card replaced in the MBPR everything has been stable and working great. I was able to change my bandwidth to auto 20/40 and the laptop connects on 40, or specify 40 only and it works. The iPhone 6 is now fast, contact and not dropping.

So in my opinion if the iPhone 6 is using the most updated latest wifi chip drivers but my routers were not because the firmware update didn't aply it correctly and needed a reset. Well I beleive this may have been the issue. Maybe the router companies assumed he firmware update applied the new drivers but in reality the router needed a reset to apply these changes and not just a restart.

NOTE: the defaults or 30/30/30 will require you to out all the wifi setting back, reset the default password and add wifi keys. So you will want to make a note of all your setting and you will also want to know your default passwords that can be found in the online manuals for your wifi router.

I am also seeing strange WiFi connectivity behavior with iOS 8.x on iPhone 6.

Using newest Apple Time Capsule, I originally set it up to use both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz by default.

My WiFi connectivity on 2.4GHz would drop, requiring an iPhone reboot to re-establish connectivity.

I changed my settings to set up a separately named 5Ghz network and find that my iPhone doesn't drop on 5GHz

but frequently drops when connected by default to the 2.4GHz network.

Anyone else seeing this kind of WiFi behavior?

I am seeing this on other iOS devices not yet running on IOS 8.x.

Could possibly be an issue with my POS NVG510 gateway that AT&T provided me as it sometimes

seems to wreak havoc on my Time Capsule performance over time.

    Thanks.

Try this and see if it helps on iphone.

    On 2.4 ghz

    show ssid

Download the program acrylic wifi*, and see what channel you neighbours use. Select a free channel on 2.4 ghz network.

    try 20 mhz channel width

    set to WP2

    Use AES

    On 5Ghz.

Hide ssid and manually join network.

    in wireless mode select N-only.

    try 40 mhz channel width.

    try channel 44 or 48.

set to WPA instead of WPA2

    Use AES/TKIP (or just Tkip)
