Hey fordskin69,

Thanks for the question, and great troubleshooting so far. I understand that you are experiencing issues with Siri after updating to iOS 8. The following resources outline additional troubleshooting steps that you can attempt:

iOS: Troubleshooting Siri

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4079

Ensure that Siri can clearly hear you

If Siri is unable to clearly understand what you are saying, make sure your microphones are not blocked.

iPhone 5

Verify that both the mic in the receiver opening and the mic near the rear camera are not blocked.

[…]

All models

  • If you are using a protective case, try removing it.
  • Try turning your device off and then on again.

iPhone: Microphone issues

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5183

Follow these steps, testing after each.

  1. Make sure nothing is plugged in to the jack connector.
  2. Make sure nothing is blocking any of the microphones (refer to the pictures below to find your device's microphones). Check for these:
    • Dirt or debris
    • A screen protector or case
    • When you're holding your phone next to your ear, make sure you don't block the microphone with your fingers or shoulder and make sure to speak into the microphone
  3. Turn the iPhone off and then on.
  4. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  5. If necessary, find general iPhone hardware troubleshooting suggestions.
  6. For further assistance, contact Apple Support.

Thanks,

Matt M.

I'm having the same issue. Updated to iOS 8. Speaker Phone, Voice Control, Voice Memo, FaceTime ... all work with microphone. Siri will not work (handsfree) but have found it will only work with Apple Headset/Microphone plugged in. Done a Restore, no luck. Did a hard reset, no luck. Appears Siri cannot attach to the Microphone. Siri works in car via Bluetooth as well. Checked all settings, disabled Siri, rebooted and enabled. Read older articles about people disabling Bluetooth, did this as well no luck. Believe I covered everything possible. Appears to be an iOS 8 bug.

I also had this problem with siri and voice dictation. (Siri would come up, but the sound wave graphic didn't come up and couldn't "listen".

1. Restart phone

2. Disbale Siri, restart phone, enable siri

3. Try above with bluetooth headset

4. Try above with 3.5mm headset

Nothing worked.

I had a third party keyboard (swype) installed and enabled. I disabled it and restarted. Siri and voice diction worked fine after the restart. I then enabled swype again. It now works, however Siri seems to stop listening faster than she used to. If I don't talk fast she cuts me off.

Your general advice makes sense, but in this case, the problem is occurring after updating to iOS 8. I'm experiencing the same problem. It's not a hardware problem. Siri works fine the first time I try it after a restart, but on the second and subsequent tries, when I press and hold the home button, the screen turns gray and the microphone icon is displayed, but there's no sound and no wavy line indicating that input is occurring.
