    Worked for me

Siri was saying that she/he couldn't understand me. I tried Reset All Settings. Worked like a charm. Thanks odysseus.

    • I've had the same issues since I had my iPhone 5.  It's got to be software - not sure which version when It began but I have to do a hard boot so often it's gotten to the point I don't use it.  This is my last IPhone.  All of the versions released and they don't seem to fix the issue.  There is no way they're not aware of this problem.  I will sometimes click on the microphone to ask siri a question but siri can't hear me and there is no volume from it.... just dead air.  Also, I'd click on the microphone to dictate an email but it the iPhone doesn't acknowledge my voice and when I press the microphone to end the attempt, the little circle where the words would have been go round and round and round and round until I backspace and just type.  I've done everything everyone said.  Two IPhone 5's and a 6.  Same issue.  No improvement.  No more Apple products.  It'd be noble of Apple to address the issue.....

For people having the microphone issue, Please try this:

When siri is up, use your finger nail/finger to tap on the rear camera area a few times. Retry Siri.

It worked for me, but only for a few days. Then I have to do it again when Siri cannot hear me.

Please report if it works for you. It's not a fix, but a temporary work around. Hopefully, the engineers will figure out what was the problem.

ONe more layer to this I terrsting little pickle.  ( I run an I5 & have tried all listed fixes carefully) when I turn Siri off, voice command mic works well.  Program is atitle primitive, but mic works and levels are fine.  my problem is definitely software based, and not a general iOS to mic problem, but specifically a  Siri to mic problem.  (This is what most posts in this thread describe, especily with other apps).

I Haven't heard mention of others successfully using the " voice control" app that takes over when Siri is turned off. Please try and repmy to this thread.  This isolates the problem specifically to Siri.   Strength in numbers people, please also try this and report back here

BTW,  sorry for the spelling & grammar in last post.  I was zoomed out too far.  Clear concise communication is always a part of finding the fixes for these problems

@ Thank You!!!  Your idea of tapping led me to the answer for my iPhone 5 at least.  I went into iMessage and hit the microphone button on the keyboard to bring up the Mic and then whacked the side of the phone against my palm fairly hard quite a few times until the line started moving again.

Previous to this I'd had to hard restart the phone to have it work for a few seconds again, plug in and unplug a headset with a microphone, etc.  It would often work again for a few seconds then stop.  I even tried all the noise canceling/hearing aid mode/restore iPhone suggestions.  So frustrating to answer the phone and have the other person not able to hear you, and to not be able to use siri or txt to speech.  Pretty much makes the phone a barbie ipad.

The fact that smacking/tapping the phone could restore functionality lead me to some online searching and I learned about the well know issue with iPhone microphones in the repair industry, it is just another manifestation and problem related to the well documented design flaw referred to as the "grounding issue", and yes apple knows about this.  Apparently it is third most common hardware repair issue after cracked screens and debris in the audio jack and if your phone is under warranty they will replace it.  If it isn't don't despair it can be fixed.

People can search this out themselves, search you-tube for "iphone mic fix"  there are a number of videos showing the fix.  There are two things you can do to prevent it from reoccurring and fix the issue, loosen the grounding screw, and inserting an L shaped piece of cardboard into the back of the phone.  I hope this information is as helpful for others as it was for myself.  I can use my iPhone 5 again.  Hurray!

The reason this hardware issue cropped up for so many including myself after the latest iOS update is like due to a change in the software controlling how the hardware interprets and reacts to this state, leading many to assume that it is a software issue.  I hope this helps.  Cheers.

having the same problem with my 6 after updating to ios 8.2.

reset and erased all, restored to factory settings and did NOT restore from backup. siri still not working.

voice memos work just fine, phone works fine, google voice commands work just fine. notes or message dictation works only when connected to blue tooth device.

apple support said this is a software issue and will not offer up a replacement phone. how's that for customer service???

I had the same issue as your's when I upgraded to iOS 8.1.2.

And it didn't fixed when I upgraded to iOS 8.2

I have done all the actions which were available on internet but Siri and dictation are still deaf so far.

I'm very disappointed at Apple without Jobs.

How could this issue still exist after releasing 2 patches....

At first, tech support told me that the problems with Siri was a software problem. As such, it didn't allow for my 1 year warranty to allow a fix. Who knew that Siri was still in beta and not warranted? Not me!

I about blew my stack on that one and asked to be passed up to the next level of tech support service. With that I got to the right person and we figured out that the problem was the Siri speaker, not the software. Hey Siri! worked if I was connected to a headset or to a blue tooth device. It was Siri's microphone!

They treated my right by replacing my iPhone. My new one has been upgraded to 8.2 and Siri works, regardless of how I talk to her. :-)

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for your experience sharing!!!!!!

Apple has released iOS 8.3 today, and I will upgrade my iPhone to iOS 8.3 to see what will happen.
Because my Siri could hear me when it connected to bluetooth headset and I switched it to "iPhone" by tap the bluetooth icon in the right-bottom of the screen. I still hope this is only S/W issue so far.

But I think if upgrading iOS still doesn't work, I will ask for replacement.

    Thanks again!

Hey guys, you won't believe what happened to my iPhone!!!!

I was very depressed to my iPhone since I have done so many actions in vain.

So I hit my iPhone's front camera several times, and said "hey siri" angrily...

And...my Siri and Dictation are back...

I can't figure out why Siri and Dictation work again...Orz

Maybe I put the Siri's Microphone back to the correct position inside my iPhone by hitting it...

    Still feel shocked now...
