Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Take a look at the support article below to learn more about Family Sharing and how to create an Apple ID for a child under the age of 13.

Sep 20, 2014 1:51 PM in response to alex_h1by stumcandrew,Hi Guys,
I have the same issue, and the answer above doesn't really help.
I set up an iCloud account for my six year old daughter some time ago, for which I used my birthdate in order to be able to create the account. This has worked fine and still does.
I now want to add my daughters account to the new family sharing feature of iOS8, which I want add as a child account. Unfortunately, due to the incorrect birthdate, the account has been added as an adult account.
I have attempted to change the birthdate on my daughters account to the correct age, but this isn't allowed for some reason.
I appreciate that I could set my daughter up with a new iCloud child account as detailed in the above post, however I want her to keep the same email address and for her to not lose the progress she has made in games like Clash of Clans.
Is there a way I can convert my daughters account to a child account?
Cheers
Stu

Sep 21, 2014 12:15 PM in response to stumcandrewby N231SD,I have a similar issue. I have accounts for my kids and their birth year isn't configured. It's setup as 0000. I attempted to change birth year and says only a parent can change that but there is no parent setup. And thus I can't setup the kids Apple ID with family sharing until I've setup the birthday.
The above link is great for setting up new accounts but not useful for accounts already in place.
Anybody found a workaround? Thanks...

Sep 21, 2014 4:40 PM in response to N231SDby JohnnyG76,I Set all my kids birth year to 2000 or 2001 so they are all 13-14. It's the only current workaround for accounts created prior to ios8.

Sep 22, 2014 8:09 AM in response to Chavilloby Timothy Killian,I'm having the same problem.
I go into manage their Apple ID and I click on security and I try to edit the birthdate and get an error "Birthdate cannot be changed at this time."
Apple? How do we change this. I have two kids and am trying to set up Family sharing under IOS 8

Sep 22, 2014 8:14 AM in response to Timothy Killianby JohnnyG76,I believer there is currently only 2 ways to do this:
- for existing AppleID's created before the release of ios 8 - set their birthday to a date that makes them 13. You can't go less than that with the old system.
- create new iCloud accounts using the link found under Family Sharing on your ios8 device.

Sep 22, 2014 2:04 PM in response to JohnnyG76by stumcandrew,The good news is that the advise to set a DOB to make the child 13 has worked, in so far as it makes my daughter be classified as a child.
The bad news is that the main reason I wanted to set her up as a child so that I could remote approve her purchases, and this still doesn't work, as her account is set up as sharing my iTunes account, and this isn't compatible.
Sounds to me like this new family sharing feature of iOS8 is designed for people who haven't already got their kids in the apple eco system already. Dispointing, but not the end of the world.
