Q: dictionary not working in ibooks ios8

I just upgraded my ipad air with ios 8.

Returning to my read I can't get the dictionary to find any definitions any longer. The downloaded dictionaries shows on the list with a circle (non clickable) but i can download new languages and they still work. I have tried restarting the ipad and closing ibooks. I guess I cant reinstall ibooks anymore since it so conveniently now is part of the os.

What to do to fix this?

Hi, here are the steps that solved it for me:

    1. Open iTunes, connect iPad and synchronize it.
    2. In iTunes go to the list of installed apps (not the app store) and delete the iBooks app (right-click).
    3. Find the iBooks app in the app store and download it.
    4. Synchronize again.

    Hope that helps!

If Sync Collections is turned off then turn it on

    this just worked for me

Thanks a lot, that did it for me! Although, as someone already said, my sync was turned on already. I just turned it off and that did the trick. Afterwards I turned sync on again and was asked to login to iCloud - seems like iOS 8 was waiting for that login somewhere in the background from in between the update and the following login. At least that's what I'm suspecting now... Anyway, turning off Sync Collections did it.

I have tried every step outlined in this thread and more and my dictionary still does not work. Have been without a dictionary since upgrading to iOS 8 (currently running v.8.1.2). All apps are updated, everything is "synced", I've power-cycled until this thing is ready to break, I've used the iTunes suggestions (which doesn't work because the fields to "update" arent even there), and I've turned off and back on every feature from iBooks to Keyboard to iCloud. Apple - please just fix this problem already. We've all been more than patient.

This worked for me. Go to Settings sign out of icloud then try using the dictionary and then sign back into

    your iCloud account.

What I did is I opened iBooks, selected a word then clicked define. Then on the window that pops up, select manage on the lower left to that box. Then tap on the cloud icon of the apple dictionary and English dictionary or whatever dictionary you want to add. Close iBooks. I closed it even on the multitasking. Then reopen it then tried defining again

For iOs users, select the word, go to define, tap "manage" and download the apropriate dictionary..... Done!
