Q: iPad Air, iOS 8 and random reboots with blue screen

Restore didn't work. It rebooted then second it was finished lol. I'm losing my mind. Wonder how far an iPad mini will go if I throw it?!

tthere are basically 3 ways to upgrade ur iOS.

1. Over the air without doing anything... settings, general, software update, OR
2. put iPad in recovery mode, connect with iTunes and start recovery... a clean iOS update through pc

    here, u hv 2 options:

        a) set up as new device

        b) restore from backup...

for BSOD, option 1 and 2 (a) seems to work fine...

option 2 (b) isn't working... so don't restore from backup once in 8.1...

but this is a serious concern...

what if, for any reason we need to restore it in a month from our backup? back to square one?

all right... then this is the trade off... with BSOD devices, post 8.1, you don't restore from backup.... you either update over air or just have a clean install...

anyone here struggling with 8.1, can be kind enough to do recovery and a clean install of everything and can confirm that it's working?

apple always suggests that when u have a software bug, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS perform a clean install... never restore from backup...

Sounds to me like it would be prudent, for those that have successfully updated over the air to 8.1, to now take a backup of their ipad. At least you are less likely to run into problems down the track as eluded to by Birju

This is not entirely correct. While I agree that a corrupt backup restored on  a device can bring back issues before the update.

I have an iPad Air which was restarting quite a lot before updating to iOS 8.1. Like you, even I thought restoring from backup would bring back the issues. But they didnt. Its been three days and i have not had any restarts even though i restored my device from the backup which had issues.

One thing I would like to point out is I resetted all the settings after the update, which i anyways do after every update.

So even after updating to iOS 8.1, if the BSOD still persists, its time to take your device to apple store for a check up. Panic Logs are a result of hardware failures as well.

Try resetting all the settings first. That normally takes care of lot of issues for me. I have not had a single restart after iOS 8.1 and even a lot of diagnostic logs which used to create with iOS 8.0.2 have stopped as well.

Its not true my friend. I have restored my device from backup after a clean install. And its been three days and i have not had a single restart and i have been using my iPad quite extensively. So if issue persists, then its either an app issue or bad hardware.

llots of people here talking about restoring backup and still having BSOD so I thought they are connected... but if u can confirm that it's gone for you, it's a real relief...

guys, kindly keep updating community here with what you did so we have a good knowledge base...

though reset all settings is a tricky thing... it erases all iCloud data bcos of some bug in iOS 8...

Thats the reason i had to mention so that people dont think its the only solution and let go of their saved games etc for the restore as new.

iPad Air 32GB. I had iPad air crashing with blue screen almost everyday after upgrading to ios 8, 8.01 and 8.02. Too many kernel panic in the log. Now I have updated with 8.1 (restored with 8.1), manually put back all the app.  24 hour passed, I am yet to see a bluescreen or Panic in the log. Removed wiki offline from avocado hill as it was crashing without panic or bluescreen. Kept apps which has been updated for iOS 8. Wait for few more days to put back older applications.

I am having the same issue on my iPad 3, 64GB since UNSUCCESSFULLY updating to the latest iOS 8 version except mine goes directly to the Apple screen.

Thanks god. My iPad air never restart again after updating to iOS 8.1. BTW, no 'watch dog, something not update' diagnostics any more.

Hello everybody! Well, iPad Air 64GB WiFi after update to iOS 8.1 no BSOD whatsoever since monday, I did the update via OTA, no restore, no backup, just plain OTA and apparently it fixed the bug, performance more stable and smooth. Let's hope there won't be more "surprises" from now on.. Thanks to all that posted your iPad issues here and helped get this fixed.

I was feeling like you last night - spent several hours trying to restore.  Eventually got my ipad to stay on long enough to wipe new.  Still got BSOD and won't even stay on at all. 

I just spent 20 minutes on hold and about 10 minutes talking to Apple Support - the result?  A new iPad will be in my hands by Friday.  I'd go that route if I were you (if you return one with a broken screen from throwing it, you get charged a damage fee - just BSOD problem replace for free )
