iOS 8 T-Mobile WiFi Calling iPhone 5S : Outgoing calls fine, incoming calls go directly to voicemail.

iOS 8 T-Mobile WiFi Calling iPhone 5S : Outgoing calls fine, incoming calls go directly to voicemail.

Spent a good part of the morning on my landline phone troubleshooting this issue with T-mobile. (Up front, I'm a Mac consultant & very tech savvy. I get paid to troubleshoot. lol)

Bought a new iPhone 5S yesterday from the T-mobile store, just so I could use WiFi calling, seeing how it won't work on any iPhone below that model. I found out the hard way. 😉

Came home. Put my iPhone 5S into recovery mode & clean installed iOS 8. Set up my device as new. Installed apps, music, etc. Put my old sim card from my iPhone 5 into the 5S, placed a few LTE calls, then turned on WiFi calling. Placed a few calls. Seemed everything as working okay. Proceeded to work on setting up all my apps, and get my phone back to "my normal". Around 2 AM I backed up my phone in iTunes. Went to bed.

Fast forward to today. Turn my iPhone 5S on. See it's still connected to WiFi Calling. Go about business. I get a Notification ... "You have voicemail." Okay. I return the call. No problem. Fifteen minutes later. Another voicemail Notification. Huh? My phone was right next to me, didn't hear it ring or vibrate. I checked that the phone was not on Silent Mode, the Silent switch was not on, not in Airplane mode etc etc.

Pick up my landline & call my cell. Goes direct to voicemail. Huh? I turn off WiFi altogether & call the iPhone. Straight to voicemail, even though I have a 4G signal. I go back into Settings & turn off the WiFi Calling switch, to be certain I didn't find some odd software bug. Call my iPhone again. Voicemail. My phone can no longer receive calls on 4G, or LTE even with 2 bars. It's all I've ever needed.

I call T-mobile from my landline. They check everything on their end. I'm provisioned properly. I pull my sim, read back the serial number on it. It's all good. The sim is also new enough for WiFi calling. The rep calls my iPhone, goes to voicemail. She asks me to reset my iPhone 5S COMPLETELY. Begrudgingly, I do. Once reset and generically configured, she calls me & the call comes through on 4G. WiFi is on and I am connected to my WiFi network but WiFi calling is off, and not yet configured.

I turn on WiFi Calling again. I call the rep from my iPhone 5S, no problem. She can not call me, she goes to my voicemail. I wipe & reset the phone AGAIN. Once I'm back at the Home screen, she calls me via 4G. I can call out. She escalates the ticket & says I'll get a call back on Sunday to see what they come up with. So I wait.

While waiting, I turn WiFi Calling on again. Same problem. I then take my sim out of the 5S & put it back into my 5 which was just wiped and generically set up. I wanted to see if it was a hardware issue. I put the sim in the 5, get a 4G signal & call my iPhone 5 from my landline. Direct to voicemail. So whatever info is sent to T-mobile over WiFi with WiFi calling enabled on the 5S, remains that way until the 5S is wiped and reconfigured.

I have since wiped the iPhone 5S, did the initial set up & let iTunes configure it from my last "my normal" backup. The phone is working fine now if I DON'T turn on WiFi Calling.

As it sits right now, I'm waiting for a call back to see what may be going on on T-mobile's end as they investigate.

I just posted this to see if anyone else had had similar problems. (Sorry if it's too detailed. lol)

BTW ... I will also send this same post to Apple too & see if I get a response. I've also decided to call Apple tech support too, since this is a NEW phone. I'll report back.

The Router itself needs nor takes any sim cards.

Well, to those of us who took advantage of T-Mobile's offer of T-Mobile@Home services some years ago, we have up to two additional phone lines for use at home through the internet at $10/month each (a bargain when first offered). I took them up on both!

The Linksys router supplied by T-Mobile is only a wireless "G" so at least now I will get faster wireless coverage, but I will not be able to "retire" my Linksys, so that I can continue to access and use both phone lines.

Joe/ Michael

I had the exact same experience that Joe described in the first post. Except that I am using iPhone 6 Plus with iOS 8.0.2

The only way I could receive calls was to reset the phone and reinstall through iTunes.

I am presuming that I have a 3GG SIM card since this is the latest model phone obtained through T Mobile. Is there a way to tell?

I am too apprehensive about trying out WiFi calling again after what happened the first time around.

By the way there is a post on the T Mobile forums where a person has posted detailed specs of how the WiFi calling may mess up the VPN connection which also causes the phone to heat up more than usual - it is the post by reader "ryanhu"

I'd say the only way to be certain, go to your local T-mobile store & have them check it. Who's to say the manufacturing plant didn't have 3GG sims & installed what they had. You just don't know. So I'd go to the store to have then determine if that's the issue. You can also ask them to send you the T-mobile branded WiFi router for WiFi Calling. Also make certain your e911 Emergency Info is set up & the address is correct. That may have also added to my issues initially. Good luck!

Hi

At the advice of the Apple and T Mo tech people I backed up my phone and tried W Fi calling again and it worked! - even receiving calls

Interesting that one has to enable WiFi calling before putting the phone in airplane mode as this action precludes going into the Phone menu.

I turned WiFi calling off and can still receive calls

The Apple person told me to reset my network setting but I am thinking that when I did my reset from the first time around it may have fixed the flaw.

Thanks again for all your advice and good luck with the new devices!

I have an iPhone 5s with ios 8.02 and t-mobile. The issue was incoming Wifi calls went straight to voicemail. I called t-mobile support. The tech reviewed the settings for my phone in the network. She corrected some settings in the t-mobile system. Then I reset Network settings on my iphone. Went through the restart process. I can receive incoming Wifi calls now.

The tech is also performing the same system changes for my wife's phone. I will go home and perform the Network reset on her iphone.

I will follow-up in a few days to confirm a permanent fix or whether the issue continues.

As far as I'm concerned this thread is closed & solved.

The short of it ...

Make sure you have a 3GG SIM from T-mobile in your iPhone 5c, 5S, or 6.

Make sure you have set or updated your e911 Emergency Contact Information, either through T-mobile customer service or through the WiFi Calling settings on your iPhone.

And if you want ... get a free T-mobile WiFi router through T-mobile customer service. But this is NOT needed to make WiFi Calling work ... it will just work better.

I've done all three of these things & my iPhone 5s has worked flawlessly using WiFi calling—both in and out.

And now ... I will stop following this thread.

Good luck to all! And happy WiFI Calling! 🙂

I have called T-mobile support and then transferred to Apple support. So far when I mention the 3GG Sim, no one has heard of it. Do you have a recommendation regarding how to request the 3GG Sim. I tried the local T-mobile store with no success regarding the 3GG Sim. I searched T-mobile 3GG Sim with no definitive search results.

I've had this problem since switching to T-Mobile. I have gone through months of dealing with customer service. I've had my sim card replaced, wiped/reset my phone several times, reset network settings, changed other settings, and of course made sure to have the Do Not Disturb feature turned off. I'm still missing calls and only being notified of them if they leave a voice mail. I've lost out on several jobs because of this, so for me it's beyond an annoyance.

T-Mobile did offer to send me a replacement iPhone, which I first accepted. However upon receiving it I noticed it was a refurbished iPhone and had scratches and scuffs all over it. Being that mine was in pristine condition and I needed it to be when I sold it that was unacceptable to me. I also would have been charged over 200 dollars if they found that the moisture indicator on the phone I return showed that it got wet. Being that I live in Southeast Texas that's a ridiculous condition to be okay with. Maybe that "new" phone could have worked, but I didn't feel comfortable losing out on hundreds of dollars on resale value as well as probably having to pay a couple hundred more because they find my phone to have water damage.

What's worse is that there doesn't seem to be anyone who clearly knows why this is happening or how to fix it. Once I pay off this phone I'll be switching providers and, unless I can get better answers/results or know this doesn't happen with the iPhone 6 (Plus), I'll be turning away from the iPhone 😢
