Sep 23, 2014 2:49 PM in response to Okbartby trevorfromoakpark,HI Okbart, yes I can only assume that the options for cellular vary depending on whether your device was purchased locked to a carrier or not. Mine was unlocked, and so the options for me are 1) Cellular data on/off 2) Carrier. Then within Carrier it can be set to a) Automatic - which is the setting it was always on and it simply followed the carrier of the SIM inserted, or not-automatic in which case a list of carriers is displayed and you select one and that is what's got me going again.
Clearly different if your device is locked!

Sep 23, 2014 2:55 PM in response to adriennefromwashingtonby jayeburney,I have the same problem. I have to turn off my iPad then turn it back on to get my ATT connect. Soon afterwards it disconnects on its own. Why couldn't they warn us beforehand? I don't get it. Just let us blindly screw up our devices. I agree that if your device is prompting you to upgrade it should be a given that it is safe. My $800 iPad is afu. Guess I'll start looking at Samsung

Sep 23, 2014 3:03 PM in response to Texas Mac Manby Lmaris,Actually you can. Many of us have, successfully.
Macworld’s Chris Breen has an excellent article on how to do revert to iOS 7
The website RedmondPie has a list of links to iOS 7.1.2
http://www.redmondpie.com/download-ios-7.1.2-for-iphone-ipad-direct-download-lin ks/
Unless you have a complete backup of your iOS 7 data on your Mac, be prepared to reinstall and reconfigure everything. And if you upgraded any apps that only work in iOS 8 it looks like you’re out of luck on getting the version that worked in iOS 7.
Good luck!

Sep 23, 2014 3:07 PM in response to adriennefromwashingtonby AppleUser1265,I had the same issue. After upgrading my iPad 2 3G to iOS 8, it would occasionally disconnect from the cellular network, with a restart being the only fix. After searching google for an answer I noticed that my iCloud keychain had been deactivated on my iPad. After re-activating it, instantly the "no service" icon dissapeared and my iPad connected to AT&T. Later, it disconnected again after sitting for a while, but this time I was able to fix it by simply opening the keychain setting under iCloud.

Sep 23, 2014 4:18 PM in response to AppleUser1265by trevorfromoakpark,Replying to Shenderson8 and Robert from Junction City re iCloud Drive and use of Cellular Data.
Interestingly, on my iPad 2, with a 3G Pre Paid SIM here in Australia, I'd explicitly chosen not to enable that functionality, so I don't think that was the root cause of my issues. Here this morning, once again still can report my network connectivity appears to be working OK with Carrier Selection set to manual, BUT I recognize this is not an option open to all, with locked devices.
But the real kiler is for me the atrocious performance of day to day activity on the iPad 2 under iOS 8 - not just activities you would expect to perhaps take longer like say saving documents, or big ticket items, but common place activities like text boxes in Safari getting the focus - such as the text box to accept your password when logging onto this support forum. I know this because I use a password manager and want to paste in my password, and the time it takes for the password field to both "get the focus" and when holding my finger on the box to finally provide the "Paste" option is extraordinary - and hit and miss.
This alone is making the device enormously less usable and despite my misgivings - such as apps like Pages and Keynote that have been "one-way" upgraded - and the uncertainty of whether I do have a good backup - I'm thinking of downgrading back to 7.1.2 while I still can.

Sep 23, 2014 5:06 PM in response to Lmarisby jayeburney,
Ok, I followed the instructions to recover 7.1.2 but I have a problem with the download of the IPSW. It saves as a zip file. I extracted but when I click "shift" and "restore" a window opens with a list of the extracted files, not the IPSW. Somehow I am missing something. Any ideas? Thank you. -

Sep 23, 2014 7:41 PM in response to Robert_Cote_NHby trevorfromoakpark,Just wanted to report that after 24 Hours of pretty much "normal" operation since I changed my carrier selection from Automatic to Manual, my iPad 2 under iOS 8 just lost Service again, necessitating a full reset for the first time again.
Oh well, it's clearly not a 100% solution even for my particular situation, so that combined with the awful performance I'm experiencing has me leaning very strongly towards a return to iOS 7.1.2, even if I do have to reconstruct the App's installed etc, if I can't find a valid backup ....

Sep 24, 2014 2:39 AM in response to trevorfromoakparkby trevorfromoakpark,And another observation from my end here, which may add to the accumulated knowledge about this issue. By the time I'd arrived home, my iPad had reverted to "No Service" again, which had pretty much convinced me that as a result of this and the slow performance I should revert back to iOS 7.1.2.
Fascinatingly, having iTunes open, the very moment I plugged the iPad into my Mac, Cellular connectivity was re-established! This would tend to suggest that it is in some way wrapped up with the iCloud keychain stuff that was mentioned earlier in this thread, but in what way, I have no idea. In the past I've noted that plugging an iPad into the iTunes instance it is synched with will unlock a disabled iPad - clearly authenticates you as the valid owner - so perhaps this is some similar circumstance.
Just wish we had a solution to this one! Still think I'm going back to iOS 7.1.2, but thought this was probably valuable additional information.

Sep 24, 2014 6:41 AM in response to trevorfromoakparkby trevorfromoakpark,I have now given up on iOS 8 on my iPad 2 and pursued the following procedure:
Used the following link as my primary guide to restoring my Australian, unlocked iPad 2:
http://osxdaily.com/2014/09/21/downgrade-ios-8-back-to-ios-7-1-2/
The problem I did have however was that due to my imprudent approach to the original upgrade, I didn't have a stand-alone backup of the iPad 2 prior to the upgrade to iOS 8. Therefore after the "downgrade" step back to 7.1.2, the iPad sort of looked like it might have been working, but it really wasn't stable at all.
I concluded therefore that the only real option I had was to use the "Erase all Content and Settings" option and basically return to Factory Settings and start again. Not an enormous deal because, apart from the time it takes to get everyone re-synched back across really, in terms of Apps, Photos etc, etc. Tedious, but not insurmountable, and to get back to a reliably working iPad 2, I'll take that hit. I'm not fully there yet, but things appear to be going OK.
So far so good. Will report back on any issues I encounter.

Hopefully Apple will have a solution soon:
Wednesday, Sep 24, 2014 • Updated at 3:31 PM EDT
An Apple spokesperson confirmed to NBCNews on Wednesday that it has pulled its iOS 8 update one week after it was initially released after widespread reports that the software has left some users unable to access cell service, among other issues. It is unclear whether the problem affected random iPhone users or certain carriers, as some were able to download the update with no issue. There have also been some reported issues with Touch ID after downloading the update, with some users noting that the feature —which enables users to unlock their phones using their fingerprints— was no longer working.
