Retrieving Microsoft Office Product Key from Time Machine

Hi All,

I have recently replace my hard drive with a SSD in my Mac book pro late 2011 and carried out a time machine restore, now when I try to open any microsoft office for Mac apps it is requesting my product key and I am unable to close the pop up. I no longer have the product key as I recently moved and mislaid the key is there any way of going into a previous time machine back up to retrieve the key ?

Thanks in advance.

No. If you lost the activation key that came on the CD envelope, you'll need to get in touch with Microsoft. Every restoration of Office requires that you enter your activation key once again - they just make it a bit difficult.

Hmm - I can't recall... I'm an Office 365 subscriber, so every time that I restore, I get a dialog box that offers to allow me to go to my Microsoft account or enter the activation key.

A restart doesn't help? Did you leave the "Reopen windows..." check box unticked?

For the future, somewhere on your boot disk there's a Microsoft Office folder. The next time you get the product key, create a TextEdit document, enter the product key in it and save the document in the MS Office folder. If you restore from Time Machine or a backup, it'll be there. Make recording such key numbers (product keys, authorization codes, etc.) on your computer where you can find them, and you'll thank yourself down the road.
