Q: Constant Panic reboots OSX Mavericks

Hello all,

Would like to get some help from you guys.

Since I've upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks I'm getting at least 4 to 5 panic reboots a day.

What I already did:

Reinstalled OSX Mavericks

Moved back to Mountain Lion (no panic reboots at all)

Clean install OSX Mavericks

OSX hardware test (no issues found)

The panic reboots are happening completely random, some times I hear my Mac rebooting while I'm not using it, sometimes it happens while browsing, sometimes it happens while downloading... So there is no common point to be found.

Below is a report after such a panic reboot, I'm hoping that someone can share some light on this.

Thanks already!

    Do you have a NAS or other network fileserver?

    Look at other panic logs and see if "last loaded kext" is always the same "com.apple.filesystems.smbfs 2.0.3."

    You DO NOT have any 3rd party drivers, which are the more typical cause of Mac panics.  So I'm going to guess RAM is the problem.

    You have a pair of 2GB cards and a pair of 8GB cards.  I suspect the 8GB cards you added.

    I would try removing you added RAM (assuming that is the 8GB cards) and seeing the panics continue.  I do understand that going from 20GB down to 4GB will make your system less responsive, but it is the best way to isolate the issue.  If that works, or if that fails, still switch to running ONLY the pair of 8GB cards and see if the situation changes.

    You could run Rember overnight (that is to say not a single pass, but lots and lots of passes overnight so it has a chance to really beat on your RAM)

    <http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15837/rember>

    It may find a flaw in your RAM.

    And just to cover all my bases, do you know if your Mac is overheating?  Sometimes if a system runs with an elevated temp, it stresses components, so if your panics have been happening when the system is chewing on something that either runs the disk hard (heating it up and thus the inside of the Mac), or the CPU or the Graphic chip, that might over stress some other component to cause it to do the wrong thing.

    Seems that every reboot comes back with smbfs or afpfs as first loaded kexts

    Does that say you something?

    Thanks, same panic reboots with both only 4gig of mem as with 16gig of mem. Also the mem test didn't reveal anything

    Does that say you something?

    Not really.  They are Apple provided file sharing drivers (SMB is the Windows protocol, and AFP is the Apple protocol), and millions of Mac users on a regular basis.

    Thanks, same panic reboots with both only 4gig of mem as with 16gig of mem. Also the mem test didn't reveal anything

    I do not have an easy solution for you.

    I would suggest booting into Safe Mode, which will clear out any kernel caches, and not load any 3rd party stuff by default to see if there is any other software related item causing this.

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>

    Next would be to play with something like smcFanControl to see if your CPU is running at an elevated temp

    <https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23049/smcfancontrol>

    overheating components can cause problems.  Switching OS versions may change the pattern of hardware usage that runs up the temp higher for a component than the previous OS version.  This is mostly speculation, I'm just fishing for ideas now.

    Next on my list is to backup your system (and as I'm paranoid about backups, I would say backup twice), then do a clean install of the OS.  This is a pain, but if you cannot isolate the problem, it might be something to try.

    You might consider an Apple Store Genius appointment to see if they can diagnose the problem.  As far as I know, then diagnostic is free.  If they decided you need a hardware repair, that is what will cost you, unless are still under warranty or have an Apple Care policy in force.

    Thanks Bob for your reply, in regards to the temperature; I have iStat running and that is showing normal temperatures on all components. (Average temp of 30 Celsius)

    Clean install I already tried before, but I can try this again.

    If I can figure this issue out I will probably fallback to Mountain Lion and wait till Yosemite to be released.

    Ok, clean install again, no luck... still same panics.

    Temp on all components still OK no problem with that.

    Now I have installed Yosemite Beta and it's running stable for 3 days already... No panic reboots what so ever...

    I will leave it as it is now and skip the Mavericks OSX.
