How can I disable the split screen in Safari in iOS 8?
As a mature user, I need the entire screen so I can enlarge textwhile reading. This split screen uses too much space for me.

Hi. Only the newer model iPads have it. If you don't have normal Split View, you don't have it in Safari either. It requires an Air 2 or Pro, I believe.
Thanks Diana, I have the iPad Pro and couldn’t follow the previous suggestions, but yours worked.
Choose 'close this tab' out of the menu choices which appear when you hold the overlapping boxes.
I was not referring to the keyboard, but to the new split screen in Safari, etc. I did learn how to disable it though. :-)
To the left of the search area, there is an open book icon. Tapping that icon will toggle the split screen off and on!! Too cool!!! If it is black, the screen is back to its larger self. If it appears in a white square, you have a split screen. Apple thinks of everything!! I am apple to the core since 1980s.
Hi. I think they're referring to the bookmarks symbol in Safari. Control of Safari split view is changed under iOS 10. Now you tap and hold the multipage icon (two overlapping boxes) to turn off Safari Split View.
AT the top left corner there is an x. If you tap that one screen will disappear.
Thank you so much! I was unable to figure this out on my own, had gotten so frustrated with Safari as a result that I actually downloaded the Chrome app!Now if I can just get the same thing to work in the mail app I will be happy.
...and, it turns out it's even easier in mail, it's just the regular "expand" icon rather than the slightly less intuitive book icon. So: HAPPINESS!
Yes, I have Version 10.1.1 (14B100), and I can't seem to find it at all on there. I have looked online to see how it is done and everything that they have said to get it to do it does not work either. Weird...
If the keyboard is in the middle of the screen, tap the tiny keyboard then slide your finger up to dock and merge.
This was driving me nuts! Thanks for posting. Worked as advertised.
WWhere is the book icon? I don't see one anywhere on my screen...
I have the iPad Air 2, that is why I was wondering, I'm not seeing it and it could be useful if it is what I think they are saying.
Do you have iOS 10? It allows Safari to display two tabs side-by-side. I believe you hold the multipage button to open the second window.
Thank you!
At last the correct answer..........
I was going nuts.
Thanks to you I am back to normal!
Almost!
Go to the far right lower square icon when in split screen mode. Hold it down & choose close all tabs, Voila’ !
When in split screen mode in Safari theres a square icon on the bottom far right, hold it down & click “close all tabs” 🦄 Julia
