Sep 18, 2015 5:36 AM in response to nbarksonby laursaurus,This happened to my 6 Plus after I upgraded to IOS 9 this week. Only the ringtone was silenced. Other sounds worked.
On another website, I tried a suggestion to hold down the power button (on the upper right side) and the home button to turn off the phone. After I turned it back on, the ringtone is working again.
HTH anybody who experiences this issue after the update to IOS 9 on the 6 Plus.

Sep 21, 2015 12:12 PM in response to nbarksonby Stepgfrumfilly,Hi I think i found a temporary solution. I cut a tiny piece of tape and taped the silent button in the off position. After five minutes I removed the tape and it stayed off and my phone is ringing again! Yeah

Oct 24, 2015 4:10 PM in response to laursaurusby svetul,Yes, it happened to me too. I have restarted the phone and it fixed it. Today though when turning to silent it failed several times. I have press the mute switch a little bit and it started working again. Maybe it's different and hardware issue. Hope the switch does not fail me permanently.

Nov 19, 2015 9:38 AM in response to svetulby lwilde68,I've had a similar experience. The silent switch on my iPhone6 would not stay in the silent position, it just would flip back up to ring mode. After careful inspection, it appeared to have some grit in the button. I used the point of a pin to scrape away in foreign material and a blow with some compressed air. The switch is working normally again. Just an alternative, before taking your phone to Apple, it might just be a bit dirty.

Dec 14, 2015 1:41 AM in response to lwilde68by Phil@kp1,Thanks, I must of had a sand grain in the switch as I have been at the beach the last few days. I got a pen knife and moved the debris. The switch now goes back and forth as it should.

Jan 10, 2016 1:15 PM in response to nbarksonby redskiesblue,I have an iPhone 6, it's not even a year old yet and it's been playing up. The volume switch on the side (silent/non silent) won't work and the volume control also. I tried all the solutions mentioned but none have worked. Does anyone know if warranty would cover this?

Whether or not it's covered by warranty depends on why it isn't working. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store for evaluation. Only Apple can give you the definitive answer to that question.

Jan 15, 2016 1:35 AM in response to nbarksonby H4wky87,By the looks of it you're not alone nbarkson. I'm having the same issue with my iPhone 6 Plus at the moment only it is stuck off silent. I'm in the process of getting it replaced under warranty as Apple Technician has inspected and deemed it to be a hardware fault. In the meantime I have found that you can use the 'Assistive Touch' function of the phone which creates an on screen virtual home button which you can use to make changes to different settings (including mute/unmute) that would normally be done via the phones physical buttons. It can also be customised to have between 1-8 settings/functions that you would use regularly. Hope this helps.

Feb 7, 2016 7:11 PM in response to nbarksonby Comk,You need to go to general>accesibility and then all the way down to "accesibility shortcut" and then select AssistiveTouch. Then go to the homescreen, triple click the home button (it will open assistive touch, click it) select device and then unmute. And done! If you want to hide assistive touch triple click again.

Feb 11, 2016 9:02 PM in response to Comkby CultureShift,Thank you! This solved my problem. The external mute button is still stuck but the virtual button serves the same purpose.
