Q: Export all tracks as audio files in LPX has suddenly ceased to function correctly

I have been working on a project for the past three months, which requires me to work from home ,then export all my tracks as audio files and take them into another studio. This is because my collaborator's DAW of choice is now Nuendo. So far, this has proved to be a very successful approach to our workflow, until today. As an example , I have a cue with 96 tracks. When I came to use export all tracks as audio files, the usual window came up, defaulting the destination to the bounces folder in the Logic song. However, this time, instead of the expected and correct number of tracks to be saved ( 96 ) , the total was 25 !

I tried this with a few other recent Logic songs and the same thing happened. None of us can figure it out. I had to manually, and individually, bounce each track separately, which was very time-consuming. A clue, though….. I tried exporting the tracks one at a time. So, the first one was, say, piccolo rips. It did that fine . The second track was Alto flute runs, but when I came to export, Logic seemed to think it was still the piccolo rips! This implies that the reason why I'm experiencing reduced export files is because Logic is thinking that many of the tracks are actually duplicates, so it's stopping them from being exported. That's the only explanation I have. However, I don't have the answer to the reason for this. I'm running the latest version of Logic.

Has anyone clue as to why this has suddenly started to happen and how it can be fixed please? I'm thinking I might just trash the Logic app and reinstall.

Many thanks for any help.

Just a very quick comment as i am working in the studio tonight....

Trashing an app and reinstalling it rarely fixes anything.. and usually it's just a waste of time...

Trashing Logic's prefs and restarting the Mac... is a different matter and that can often fix odd behavior

I appreciate your reply, Sir. I neglected to mention that I did all that. Preferences, permissions ( in recovery mode ) . They are the " go-to's " , non?   It's a real mystery, but thank you anyway.

That's good and bad to hear, if you catch my drift.....

So then you might want to try using STI (Selective Track Import) into a new project in case you have a corrupted project..... and import each track into a new project to try and fix that problem...

    http://music.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-use-selective-track-import-in-logic-p ro-9--audio-3181

This is for LP9 but works the same way in LPX

STI is one of the best yet least used ways.. of recovering from weird project based issues...

If this doesn't help... and no one else has any ideas...  I'll run a few tests here later when I done with work.... but I did do a full export of a 100'ish track Mockup Score Project as stems about 3 weeks ago... and had no issues

One quick question... When you initially created the tracks that Logic thinks are Dupes... How did you do so?

Thank you for your ongoing interest. I read your post carefully. I don't believe it's a corrupted project or song, for the simple reason that this phenomenon exhibits itself in other, non-related Logic songs. So, it's hard to explain in that context. Thererfore, I feel that this is a "global" ( i.e.: Logic / bug ) phenomenon. In the three months of utilizing this method, nothing has changed in my system to indicate a possible third-party intrusion. It all worked like a dream until today.

I appreciate the link and I'll investigate over the weekend.

In terms of your final question, they are generally based on multiple multis of Kontakt, derived from an older template. Well over three hundred virtual "tracks" in some cases. However, it surely cannot explain how this would have any bearing on the problem, since all was working fine with other songs derived from exactly the same template. It is, in short, a sudden and inexplicable "corruption", that seems to have sprung from nowhere.

    Many thanks, once again.

First of all you are welcome...

I have to say... I suspect something has changed even if you are not directly aware of it.... between the time it did work and now that it doesn't for you... Be it for example... an update to a plugin you are using.. or even a new/different plugin you are using now that you didn't use before...

I checked with one of my clients a few minutes ago, who does regular, several times a week, large project stem exports to see if he has ever had or heard of such an issue ( in case it one of those odd bugs that only rears its head every now and again..) and the answer was no, not at all...

So all I can recommend is to create some testbed projects.. using different combinations of Plugins, creation of tracks methods.. templates etc.. until you uncover the root cause of the issue... because i suspect it may well be something unique to your system, config or work method that is causing this problem..

You might also want to check with the guys at

    http://www.logicprohelp.com/forum/index.php

..and see if David, Jordi, Eric or one of the other regulars there, have ever come across such a problem.. I did a quick cursory search there and found nothing at all  but it was a very quick look/see type of search...

Maybe CCT, Pancenter... or Edgar here.. might have an idea or two, too...

Finally,  Can you also state your current OS X / Logic version please...

    Cheers..

    Nigel

Very kind of you, Nigel. I will most definitely bear all your recommendations in mind. unfortunately, it ail not help me in my current situation, as I am on a deadline of the most vicious kind, in the next two weeks, precluding any serious investigations in the manner you suggest. To my certain knowledge, I am not using , or have introduced anything new to my current system , of which I'm consciously aware. I might have to think carefully about that .

I will certainly follow this and report on any developments I experience.

I am on the latest Logic version: 10.0.7 and Apple OS 10.8.5

Once again, many thanks, for investing you time in this.

    After much testing this morning.....

With Logic Pro X 10.0.7 and Mavericks 10.9.4 or 5 on several different Mac setups I have here...  I cannot reproduce this issue at all....

I also checked with several of my clients who frequently bounce out Audio Stems from large projects and none of them have ever seen or heard of such behavior....

So from that I deduce that either...

    1) There is something amiss with your setup/system

    or...

    2) There is something you are doing in your workflow that is causing this...

    or..

    3) Maybe its a Mountain Lion related issue when used with later versions of LPX but I have to say I never came across that issue even when I was running ML.... albeit with earlier versions of LPX such as 10.0.4

Again, maybe someone else has some other ideas...  but from my own perspective and testing and from the feedback I have obtained from my client base...that's my conclusions.

Sorry I cannot be of any further help in this matter and i wish you well in discovering the cause and fix for it....

    Cheers..

    Nigel

I agree with Nigel, reinstalling the application will have little if any effect. Also concur it's possible a recently installed plugin or plugin update could "possibly" have an effect.

Do you have automatic updates enabled? An OSX update was released a couple of days ago, while you wouldn't think it would affect Logic in this manner, stranger things have happened with OSX updates.

When you trashed preferences, did you also delete the control surfaces (.cs) file. Both should be removed and Logic allowed to recreate default preferences.

Oops... sorry, just saw you are on 10.8.5 however, there were security releases that could've been installed.

Many thanks for going out of your way like this, Nigel. My answers to you 1 & 2 basically apply to both. There is nothing that I am doing differently since starting this project, that might have initiated this problem, as far as I can see. As for 3, it's amounts to the same thing. Nothing in my system has changed, with the exception of a couple of minor updates. Surely this wouldn't impact on my Logic stability in such a way!

It's a mystery; one which I have a workaround for, tedious, though it is. I will continue to investigate, though.

    Best wishes and appreciation,

    M

PC, many thanks for trying to help. I think I partly addressed one of your points in my last answer to Nigel.

To my knowledge, there have been no new plugin installations for the duration of this project. I do have automatic updates enables, but I alway check them before committing to an update. As I told Nigel, I did update a couple of recent ones, but deemed them insignificant to be a threat to Logic's stability.

The last point, about the preferences. I didn't delete the control surfaces file. That's interesting to know. I will do that. I actually used an app called Preference Manager to delete Logic's preferences. Might that delete the control surface one ,too?

    Be sure and Delete Both!

Delete the Logic 10 preferences file AND the shared control surfaces file.

In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu.

Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.

Press the Go button.  (Note, be sure and include the tilde~ in the path name)   --->    ~/Library/Preferences

Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist  file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro.

then delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.

Also, three or four years ago there was a security update that messed up Logic's performance, I forget the exact nature of the problem but because of Apple's "unit body construction" between OS and applications it is possible for an insignificant update to affect performance.

Many thanks for all this useful info, sir. I will do as you suggest. When you wrote this: (Note, be sure and include the tilde~ in the path name)   --->    ~/Library/Preferences   What is "tilde" Is that a typo ?!  Don't worry, I know how to locate this. Just curious!

I don't want to rub up the Logic community the wrong way, but my collaborator was a long-term Logic user, but finally went over to Nuendo. I have to say, in terms of stability and the incredible power of its real time audio engine, it's superior. I don't think the MIDI / virtual instrument side is so hot though, which is where 99% of my work resides. There  is one MIDI thing that Nuendo does that Logic doesn't, so…...

This is chiefly irrelevant , and for another thread, but my two-penneth.

I'll let you know how this fares. Some great guys on here, being really selfless with their time. Amazing, and continued gratitude.
