I dragged 1GB file from open Finder window into one of the desktop folder icon where I keep movies and it simply despaired.
I run Mavericks 10.9.4 but this happened on Loin as well before I upgraded.
Usually I open two windows and drag files from one to another without a problem

Open the Desktop in a Finder window in list view to see if you may have missed the folder and it ended up on the Desktop where you can't see it.
That has happened to me on several occasions, usually partly off screen in the upper left hand window.
Download and run Find Any File to search for the file name, i.e File Name is xxxxxx.jpg
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If the file is hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.
I concur with OT and would try that first.
Sounds like maybe it dropped into one of your locked Library folder, like your iMovie Library, iMovie Theater or less likely the iPhoto Library. To cautiously check, control (right) click on those and select Show Package Content. Be very careful not to disturb anything else in those areas because it can and will fubar the Library's.
Additionally if you have not moved from Finder or made another change, you should still be able to Undo the Move.
Thanks but that is not the case.
I forgot to mention that file simply disappeared and I can not find it anywhere.
Spotlight search for the file name or part of it (in all my files) is negative.

I did tried this before and undo field is greyed out.
File disappeared from the finder while dragging to the desktop folder icon and nowhere to be find.

I have IFileX which is similar and it find lost file in the application folder.
Still beats me how it got there
