how can I upgrade my iphone 4s from ios 6.1.2 to ios 7.1.2 now that only ios 8 is available ? I forgot to download ios 7.1.2 before Sept. 17th. ios 8 takes up too much room as is slower.
You can't. If you somehow force-install it, the device won't activate.

You can't. Your only option is to upgrade to the latest version of iOS that your device supports.

You can use this website (http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/) to download the firmware that you are looking for. Once you have downloaded it save it to your computer desktop. Go to iTunes, press "RESTORE" while holding down the "OPTION" key for Mac or "SHIFT" key for Windows and a window will pop up, locate the file you downloaded and select it, it will start downgrading your phone to 7.1.2. Oh and when you plug your phone to iTunes make sure you switch off your phone and plug it in while holding down the home button, only then you restore! This should work unless Apple has stopped verifying 7.1.2. Nevertheless, give it a try! Make sure to back up before doing ANYTHING. Good luck!
*UPDATE* - Apple is still signing 7.1.2, so it should work. But for how long they will continue signing I am not sure. So do it fast.

No worries. I have an iPhone 4s too. Updated it to iOS 8.. Lag is horrifying.. I have never seen my iPhone freeze before, it happened today. I will be downgrading to iOS 7.1.2 aswel. Downloading it now actually. Space is not really an issue because i got the 64 GB version but that doesn't help with performance in any manner. lol

Your answer seems to be the best of all internet for this problem, believe me. I have an iPhone 6.1.3 and want to upgrade to 7.1.2 after Sept. 17th, using iTunes 11.4.0.18. I do all the steps to tell, but at the end give error 3194. What I do wrong, where can be the problem Jason?
