Does download of free apps work with family sharing?

Has anyone had this problem with Family Sharing:

- I have been letting my daughter use my old iPhone 4s. She has downloaded a bunch of free apps as have I. Those apps include google and youtube for instance.

- I got the new Iphone6 and restored it from backup.

- I wiped my old iPhone and set it up for my daughter with IOS8

- I gave her, her own apple id

- I setup Family sharing with myself as the organizer so I could control what she downloads.

- I invited my daughter to join family sharing and she did.

- We can both see each other in the iCloud setup as family members and myself as the organizer.

- Now that it's all setup, for every download of apps that were on my old phone loaded under my apple_id, she keeps getting the error "Redownload unavailable for this apple id". She gets that for ANY app that was already on my old phone. Almost exclusively those apps are free apps which should not be restricted. I would think that FREE apps wouldn't even be considered.

- The one app that I actually paid for AFTER setting up Family Sharing is an app that she can download....The free ones NO, but the paid app, YES. WHY????!!!!

It appears that my only options are to

- NOT USE FAMILY SHARING and just let her use her apple id without being tied to me

- Let her log in with my apple id

- Return the iPhone and go Android....sounding better and bettter all the time

I'm not trying to get around paying for anything....I'd just like her to be able to download google and occasionally a new free game that she may have loaded on my old phone under my old apple id.

Is anyone experiencing this problem?

Is there a fix?

Does anyone know if apple is aware and admitting this is a problem that they are working on?

I really liked the idea of using Family Sharing the way it was described.

It is not acting as promised in the descriptions on apple's website.

In it's current state, it is totally unusable.

Can someone help me decide whether to wait for a fix or is it working (not working) as drawn up?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Same issue here.

I actually stopped the sharing but it didn't go away easy so I had to restart both phones (one 6 and one 5s) for me to see in settings that two phone are not sharing anymore.

Oh well, I get the same message "Redownload Unavailable...." on a stupid free app!!!!!

I don't normally purchase paid apps but I have a feeling it will do the same for the paid apps too.

Since I don't have many paid apps, I really don't see this family sharing useful because the location sharing looks pretty crappy too.

For location sharing, use Life 360. This is what I was trying to download.

After all, I am just hoping that the Apple server is acting really slow.

Thanks!!! I was so frustrated with this. I apparently never allowed my phone to fully restore after attempting to restore. I unplugged early and then was unable to "redownload" the same apps I had previously downloaded. By hooking back up to iTunes I was able to basically allow the sync to continue, or even tweak what I had on the old phone and was moving to the new phone. I wonder what will happen if I ever delete an app and then need to reinstall it. Oh well, because of your post I am moving forward. Thanks!!!

I can't tell if this solved it or not, but after I turned on the following, it looks like it started working:

Settings > iTuns & App Store > Automatic Downloads > Apps [Toggle On]

I was prompted to turn this on, after I had connected the phone via cable to iTuns and tried it that way. My iPhone then told me to turn on that setting if I wanted purchases from my computer's iTunes to make it on my phone. Now ... everything works via family sharing with this on.

....specifically, I went to Settings -> iTunes Store -> (Automatic Download) Apps -> Toggled ON

I did this for my device iPhone6 and my Daughters device iPhone 4s (both running ios 8.0).

I guess I can see how this could impact how Family Sharing works and maybe why it wasn't caught in their testing, but a lot of people probably have that turned off because of either battery issues (my 4s dies quickly and it was a tip to turn off everything "automatic" to help preserve battery life).

Others will have it turned off because they don't want ALL apps they ever purchased on ALL their devices.....If you have a Large Memory iPad, you would probably download lots of stuff which would blow out the memory on your iPhone with 16GB.

Anyway, it's working now and we appreciate all the help!

Thanks again.

Hi,

I've just spoken to Apple about this issue, and they have a solution - however it's not what I expected.

To recap:

Previously, my wife's iPhone was set up to use my Apple ID for App Store purchases.

After enabling Family Sharing, she cannot download OR update apps that she had previously installed by using my Apple ID. Even if the apps are deleted from the phone before attempting to download. She can install apps that I'd purchased but which hadn't been installed on her iPhone, but not any that had already been installed.

I've tried all the suggestions that I've found on here, including toggling on/off updates, re-syncing, installing apps by connecting to my Mac (they install but cannot be updated) and so on.

Apple Support's solution is to go into Settings > iTines & App Store and then change the Apple ID to the person whose account was used previously. This then allows apps to be downloaded or updated, just as before.

The stupid bit is that this means she is NOT using Family Sharing for iTunes or the App store - she's using my account again, the very thing that Family Sharing is supposed to stop!

It seems that Family Sharing is OK for new accounts, but if you've previously shared an account between multiple devices, you're probably going to have problems.

Still, the problem is fixed (for me, at least).
