Slow Wifi on iPhone 6 Plus

Anyone experiencing really slow WiFi on their new iPhone 6 Plus? Mine is super slow. When I switch off WiFi, LTE works perfectly and very snappy. I didn't have any issues with my 5s and not having issues with my iPad Air. I doubt it's an iOS 8 issue because the 5s and iPad Air are running iOS 8. WiFi also works fine on my 13" MacBook Pro Retina. It's not a router issue. Any ideas??

confirming that this is an iOs8.0.2 problem. my iPhone 6+, iPad (gen 2) throttle down after time or any movement (change rooms, etc.). my iPhone 5 holds steady under all circumstances (iOs7 still).

any reset seems to restore optimum speed: network reset, change security WEP to WPA2, etc. If I turn off wifi, wait a minute, and turn it back on it goes full throttle...for a while. iOs8.0.2 is the culprit for the throttle down... there are probably millions of people who have no idea they're running at 25% of wifi speed capacity.

Oh, and my router is a Cisco WRVS4400N with multiple VLANs. Doesn't seem to matter who's on or even if the iOs8.0.2 device is isolated on it's own VLAN.

Hi,

I am also having issues on my iPhone 6plus 64gb which is running IOS 8.0.2. I have reset the network settings on the phone. I am using with the following equipment: Apple Airport Extreme and Apple Airport Express.

I have fully reset the Extreme and Express re-flashed then and setup from new but this does not resolve the issue.

The WIFI speeds are fine when I test on my laptop in other rooms I get 72Mbs on my Mac if I test with my iPhone 6 plus I only get around 30mbs. This is present on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequency.

I am also using WPA2 and changed the encryption key. I am at a loss as to what else I can try next? Does anyone know when IOS 8.0.3 will be coming out? Or where you can download a beta version to test to see if it helps resolve the issue?

I can confirm that changing from WEP to WPA worked for a 6 and a 6+ in my household. Speed tests prior were around 2Mbps and once changed have not been lower than 14mpbs. I tried all the easy stuff first, turning off cellular, resetting network settings - didn't work.

MIght be be nice if Apple actually put something out about this though. At first I thought it was my ISP however all other devices were fine on wifi.

I have experienced the same problems as being reported here. Bought new IPhone 6. Performance on simple websites was terrible when on WIFI. Terrible.

Like others have reported here, my old iPhone worked great, my IPAd, IMAC and MacBook Air were experiencing NO problems on my home network, while my shiny new IPHONE 6 couldn't load the Pittsburgh Post Gazette in less than 7-10 seconds.

Here is what they will tell you to do…Try these, but if you have the same problem as many of us here, they won't solve your problem.

1. Reset your your wireless settings/ create a new connection to WIFI router.

2. Reset your iPhone to Factory Settings and retest

3. Restore your iPhone from iCloud or iTunes.

4. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar

I did all of these, including the appt at the Genius Bar, where they swapped my IPHONE for a new one. All in all, I had five hours invested in these attempts.

All of these solutions had immediate results that improved speed, but within a few minutes, performance was once again terrible (yes: even after they gave me a new phone)

THEN….I read on this board, that others had solved their problem by resetting their home WIFI networks to WPA2, as opposed to WEP. It increased my speed from 2-5 MBPS to 18 - 20 Mbps (my FIOS subscription caps speed at 20Mbps). This was slightly painful as I then needed to reprogram 3 TV's in my house, two iPads, two phones and my iMac and MacBook Air with the new password, but SPEED is now fine across all devices.

Keep in mind, this is only a partial solution as USERS will expect their phones to work on ALL WIFI networks, not just those where they control the security settings. This suggests that Apple will have to put out a patch to address the issue, or customers will have to accept slow performance on many WIFI networks. NOT GOOD. Hard to imagine this problem couldn't have been detected in testing before release. #MissedTheMark

I never said I was having issues with my router. My router is working completely fine for all other aspects except the iPhone 6. I have three computers connected wirelessly two iPads and another iPhone five that are all working 100%. The iPhone 6 is the ONLY device having issues. Apple software update for iOS 8 coming at the end of October better fix this issue.

Just a quick snapshot of my chain of events. I’m currently on my fourth iPhone 6 Plus 64GB here in London, UK. Every time I have spoken to AppleCare and told them that I have gone through all the Wi-Fi troubleshooting methods possible they have asked me to get a brand new retail replacement as I’m within my 14 day return period. I’ve been experiencing the following issues:

  1. Wi-Fi disconnects and switches to 4G (Restart required for temp fix)
  2. Wi-Fi is still active but there is no traffic or activity– often when in sleep mode for long periods of time. (Toggle Wi-Fi on/off for temp fix)
  3. Wi-Fi disconnects and cannot find any networks (restart required for temp fix)
  4. This has been occurring on both iOS 8 and 8.0.2
  5. The issues are the same on both my 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks
  6. This is affecting my ip6+ and 5s (5s used to work perfect on ios7 on same networks) – My MBP-R and all other devices run perfectly on my network.

I spoke to AppleCare again yesterday and asked for their advice as its now my fourth iPhone in just under a month. This time they said that apple were fully aware of the Wi-Fi problem and that new repair tickets were not being raised for their engineers as they are already working hard to get this resolved. They also said they could see all the issues raised on the apple discussions boards which they usually don’t admit too! I asked what to do next and the advisor apologised and said this is clearly a software glitch and will be resolved in the next update. I asked for a timescale but unfortunately none was given.

As stated above I have tried all the troubleshooting methods discussed on forums and on tech websites but the only thing that gives me a stable connection without any disconnects (especially on my 6 plus) is turning cellular/mobile data off when I know I’m going to be on Wi-Fi for a sustained period of time (e.g. at home or work). I appreciate this is annoying but it’s the best temp fix until an update comes out.

Hope it helps everyone who is having issues with their devices that have cellular functionality.

Any comments welcome

I hope that the next version of iOS 8 fixes the issue, but don't count on Apple to fix this. Likely this is due to your router being out of date. If you don't have a firmware update for your router then your model has likely been abandoned.

No new firmware support = it's only a matter of time before your router is junk to all but legacy devices.

Tried turning off cellular but high speeds only lasted a few minutes.

Curiously, late last night when I shut down my Desktop (Win 7, PC), speed stayed steady high (50mps) all night on my iPhone 6+ (at least when I woke up it was still steady). Soon as I booted up my Desktop, speeds dropped on my iOs8.02 devices (also a second gen iPad).

My Desktop is on a seperate VLAN and is wired to a 1gb switch off the router. I have Itunes on the Desktop (don't use it much, but it's there) and I noticed that I'm asked about updating iCloud for Windows (didn't know I had that, and I never let Apple update anything on my desktop).

Wondering if iOs8.0.2 is trying to check for something on my desktop (but cant get through to the correct VLAN). I've turned off family share/ photo stream and all the iPhone stuff that might use brute polling to check on, and then be waiting for a time out...

This is the first consistent lead I've had with this problem, but I don't know enough about how iOS does stuff to know what's next. I might try getting rid of all Apple presence on my desktop and see if that helps?

Simplest permanent solution I've found was to exchange my perfectly good Netgear R7000 for an Apple Airport Extreme. Now, my iPhone 6 wifi works great although my iPhone 5 and iPads worked great with the R7000, which was the better router and which had a lot of features I miss. The fact that the iPhone 6 has amazing wifi throughput with the Airport Extreme shows it's a software issue due to deficient testing with non-Apple Wifi routers rather than a hardware issue.

Oct 13, 2014 12:55 PM in response to EdAnuff

Haha! Any solution that requires that we get rid of all non-Apple equipment to solve is not a solution, its a bigger problem than we thought! The throughput on the iPhone 6+ is not all that "amazing." If you have a fast inet connection, then your wifi devices should run fast also (without bogging down other devices). No praise due to the manufacturer of any wise device. Maybe thank Al Gore😁!
