Alert volume tied to device volume in iOS 8

Hi there,

We just recently upgraded to iOS 8 on my wife's and my phones. My wife has a iPhone 5c, and is showing an unusual problem. Whenever she adjusts the device volume on the phone, her alerts are played back at the same volume. I did numerous tests, checking to see if her switch was set to change the ringer and alerts volume (it is turned off), and after she adjusts the volume, the ringer and alerts volume isn't adjusting along as expected. What ends up happening is when she turns down her device volume, her alerts get very quiet even if her alerts volume is around 90%. I verified the other direction too, where if we turn down the alerts volume and pump up the device volume, the alert is very loud.

This behavior was not the case in iOS 7.1.2, and I'm wondering if it's a bug in her build and if we should try a restore, or if this is a more widespread problem. My iPhone 5s has none of these problems. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you!

Yup, same problem here. It's the most annoying thing ever. It must be an ios 8 bug because I never had this happen in any previous version of the software. Do you hook the phone up via bluetooth at all? This problem occurs for me after my phone connects with my car's bluetooth system. Once I turn the car off and the device obviously disconnects from my car, this problem ALWAYS happens. I went to the genius bar to make them aware, all they had me do was submit a ticket. Odds are we will be dealing with this for a LONG time since it seems no one else is bringing it up.

Same problem here. The issue happened since iOS 7 for my iPad in my case. Now I am at iOS 8.1 with my iPhone 6 it still happens. Also iOS 8.1.1 does not fix this problem. It happens to me when I use the text to speech function. In my case it is not just the tie of volume and alert. Instead I think is the hookup of siri volume and alert and the regular volume. I hope they do fix this soon.

I Have just confirmed that this problem occurs at least in two cases: after I use the tts to read screen, and after I listen to podcast.i do have found a temporary solution: in my case I can use a so called soft reset to get back normal. Namely you just hold the power until the power off prompt. Then release the power button and hold home for 10 seconds until the home pops out itself. Accordingly this method terminates all the user generated processes in the background including the process that causes this volume issue. Try it and see if it fixes you problem. It works for me as a temporary solution.

Well yeah, of course that is a temporary solution, until you trip it to start doing it again. In which case another temporary fix is needed. In my case a temporary fix is needed EVERY time I disconnect from a bluetooth device, most notably my car audio. Think about having the soft reset your phone every time you turn off your car. I'm sorry but we do not buy these devices to have the DEAL with temporary fixes. No, we buy these devices to have them work properly as promised.

This happens on my iPhone 6 (iOS 8.3) after disconnecting from my car's bluetooth as well. If I have used any application with plus/minus-controlled audio (videos, music, etc.), my Messages notifications ignore the system settings for Volume in favor of what was set in the media application.

I haven't tried restarting to fix, but that makes sense. The easier "fix" for me is to open a media application and turn down the output volume to match.

This bug is painful. Is there a better place to document this so that it will get fixed?
