Q: IOS8 on ipad air dropping wifi connection on BT home hub 5

Two identical ipad Airs in our house - one upgraded to ios8 - one remains on 7. Both connected to our BT Wifi Home Hub 5.

ios8 ipad drops connection every minute or two and the only way to reconnect is to turn wifi off and on again.

ios7 ipad does not drop connection - ever.

ios8 ipad and router have been repeatedly reset - network has been forgotten and re-established. Dropping of network remains.

Drops happen during use - particularly annoying with connected games, news feeds, youtube and twitch.

Currently rendering upgraded ipad near unsuable for any connected content.

Anyone got any ideas? (oh - and don't just link trouble shooting guides - I've done them ALL)

thanks,

iPad Air, iOS 7.0.3

aand me it's doing my sweed in

did think of wiping the iPad to factory settings and starting again , but if it's not just my iPad then it's got to be a bug in iOS 8 .?

ive got a mini with retina and that's fine and so is my 4s and 5 .....

FUnny how how it's just the air ?

done that, reset to factory. reloaded (took ages cos it keeps droppingnout as before) still buggered. a curious thing, if i keep something like internet radion on in the background its fine. so is it just that it drops out if its not doing something? odd

iphone5 updated and works fine, just my ipad air. may go to an apple shop and get an apple tech monkey to wipe the os off completley or persuade them to put ios7 back on until a patch is released.

works fine on a cafes wifi so may be just how it intereacts with my router? (BT Homehub5)

ok that's sort of good news    means I haven't got to try mine

silly question  was the air the first thing u updated to iOS8 on your wifi ?

slight change of subject but I've just noticed I'm on a apple support community ....... And the emoji smileing faces on my key board ( iPad ) don't work on the forum even though it's part of iOS8 now   but the do work on other forums ??

Jeez ez Apple what are u doin ???

...all of a sudden things are fine... i've noticed (i think) that it know uses the 2.4ghz chanel and not the 5ghz one it was using before. both my iphone and ipad are both on 2.4 an work fine. no idea if that is significant.  it picks up  a channel automatically but you can go into advanced settings and give the 2.4 and 5ghz channels different names and passwords so you could force your device to use the one you choose. like i say not sure if that is signifiicant,

chaps, my ipad after many resets finally picked up the 2.4ghz chanel and NO PROBLEMS.

seems to be it not liking the 5ghz band, saw the same issue on annother thread. if it happens again i'm going to try the following to ensure it ONLY picks up the 2,4ghz channel

    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44504/c/346,1887,6461

in effect you will then see two WiFi networks to choose to connect too when selecting wifi. simply choose the 2,4ghz one. if it goes wrong you can reset the router by using the paperclip in the little hole on the back so you've got a way out if you bork things.

    Your welcome *takes a bow*

Interestingly enough when we changed to a BT Home Hub 5 my iPad would never retain a wifi connection when on the 5ghz band.

I disabled to 5ghz band and all has been well, until I updated to iOS 8

Note: 5ghz has been disabled for months and the iPad worked fine on iOS 7.

To resolve this I have had to revert back to iOS 7.

Note: My new iPhone 6 appears to work perfectly fine until I try and play Angry Birds Friends. Which appears to be app specific

Also a good tip about making the two bands uniquely available. I am going to try this soon and see.

ipad picked up the 5ghz band again. made the two channels unique as described in the link, very easy to do and easy to reset. works fine now, the ipad only picks up the 2.4ghz channel now (told it to 'forget' all channels to be sure)

interestingly my iphone 5 can work with both, wonder if the iphone 6 has similar issues?

either way very poor of apple to allow such a basic issue to slip through, its not as if BT are a small organisation with a handful of customers. perhaps BT can release a patch if apple cannot?

My iPad has never worked correctly on 5ghz since ios7 So it has been disabled for months.

So unfortunately that's not going to resolve my problem.

wonder whether my device is actually faulty.

Shame we can't run a poll to see if the 5ghz fixes lots of people's issues.

Has anyone upgraded to 8.0.2 and using 5ghz ?

after latest ios 8 update also had a related problem - after playing about and looking at the router discovered that it is when the IPAD switches between router frequencies, specifically if IPAD working ok and is then put down for a while and it goes to sleep - then when used again (maybe in a different room) the connection switches frequency after a minute or two and although connected to the router there is no internet connection. Have got round this for the moment by disabling the 5GHz frequency on the router. Took the IPAD into an apple genius last night and he was useless. He admitted he didn't understand anything about routers or how the IPAD selected the frequency. He suggested a reset to factory settings but from this thread it looks as though that won't fix this. Any point in raising a support ticket with Apple? (I'm new to all things apple) - forgot to say this is also happening on a BT router (latest model installed in Feb 14)

tim, really is a very easy fix. just give the 5ghz chanel on your router a different name and only connect your ipad to the 2,4ghz channel.
