Q: iphone 6 headphone jack Issues

The iPhone 6 jack has too much tolerance and 1/2 the headphones I own cause cut outs or music to stops playing.  In addition Siri will sometimes engage erroneously do to the movement in the headphone jack.  I tried and iPhone 5 and all of my jacks fit very snug without any issues.  The problem appears to be that the the iPhone 6 jack was designed to allow rotation of the connector and this is a problem for a number of headphones.

OMG I thought I was losing my freaking mind...  Thanks goodness it all makes sense now.  It seems to get progressively worse once it starts, I'm on my 3rd iPhone 6, it's a disaster to be honest.  It starts just turning off, and then it just gets worse and worse, and then siri starts coming on and soon it happens with every little wiggle of the headphones cord.  The Genius Bar has been like "I don't know...", now I know, and now I'm going to get some decent help for this issue, and for all the time I've wasted with this defective system.  What a joke, I've been an iPhone owner for 6 years and never once had an issue with my headphones.  I've now gone through 4 pairs of microphone equipped headphones, and I couldn't figure out what was going on.  This totally *****.

It is the metal at the base of the jack touching the metal on the iphone case.

I took black electric tape and with the stick side facing the male and pushed the jack through it. I pushed it all the way up the jack and with my thumb nail made sure that it was pushed all the way to the end. Then I took a small scissors and cut the excess tape off around the jack. The sticky side of the tape sticks to the base of the jack. Since the tape is thin it does not stop the jack from being pushed all the way in. I did it for 4 headsets and it worked with all 4 headsets. If your jack base is black use black electrical tape, if it is white use white electrical tape. This stops all the following

    1. Call dropping as you move the jack

    2. Music cutting in an out as you move the jack

    3. Static sound as you move the jack

I just started having the same problems, but it's also happening with the Apple EarPods I got with the phone. I've also tried the EarPods from my iPod which doesn't have a microphone but strangely enough also has 4 pins on the plug! After calling apple they said I should reset the phone which hasn't helped. I'm 2 weeks out of warranty and it just now started happening... Any suggestions? The tape method isn't working for me...

Go to a store and get a replacement!  (Back up first!)

My original was pretty bad, but my replacement was perfect.

I would do that, but the closest Apple Store is in another country, Austria doesn't have any... And like I said, I'm about 2 weeks out of warranty... I bought my phone on October 11th 2014 and had it replaced in July because of a cracked screen, so maybe thatll be a way to still get it replaced without costs

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem here. I'm using a Sennheiser MM70i (which is designed for Apple). The plug has no metal edge like some people describe here, but it still gives a lot of noise/crackling sounds or left channel dropping. I had my iPhone 6 replaced in Amsterdam. The guy hjelping me tested the iPhone on a speaker set they use there to test and he noticed the problem. He gave me a new Phone, we plugged in the Sennheiser and the problem was gone. Now, some months later, it started occuring again. I thought the problem went away wome weeks ago, but now it is getting worse and worse. The only thing not happening is Siri starting.

What I do notice too is that, when I plug in a headset without a microphone, it gives intermittent static noises the first few seconds (about 10) after it's plugged in. I don't think that's normal.

I think I'll have my Phone replaced again, but I'm a bit worried about what will happen after a few months then. The Phone will be out of waranty but I'm pretty sure the problem will re-occur. I'm not willing to use the Apple Earpads, since those are worhless. (It's actually unacceptable that Apple delivers such bad quality headsets with their state-of-the-art iPhones, but that's another matter).

I think apple should start a repair program to solve this isue.

Maybe off-topic: I understand that Apple considers to start using their own connector for headsets on their devices. That would mean that a standard jack connector will be dropped by them. could it be that they cause this problem deliberatelly, so they can use all the isues mentioned here as an excuse to do so? Or am I being paranoid... (probably am) :-)

Just tested with the Apple Eadpads and ... the same problem occurs there! Touching or slightly turning the plug makes a crackling noise/makes the music pause/resume, etc. So, the problem is universal and does include the Apple earpods. This was the case with my first iPhone 6 too.

I think I'll make an appointment at the apple store and insist they solve the problem once and for all. If not, I want my money back. Or a free bluetooth headset with the same sound quality as the MM 70i Sennheiser.

So I sent my 6plus in to apple, and they found that my phone is apparently bent which is the cause of the issue. But since accidental damage is not covered I would have to pay 350 Euros to have it fixed/replaced... Always had the phone in its case and only in loose pockets/ backpack. I'm pretty disappointed in Apple, the quality of their products used to be a lot better.

So for anyone else who has the issue, please check if your phone has even the slightest amount of bending or twisting since that's most likely the cause of the headphone jack cutting out.

In my humble opinion, what they told you is crap. It may be true that a slightly bended phone causes the problem, but it makes me wonder:

how is it possible that the phone was bent in the first 10 to 12 mm at from the bottom? The bottom and top of the phone should be stronger than it is half way the enclosure. So, the chance it was bended is slight to none. Did you see it yourself? Can you confirm it's bent?

Secondly, if you have your phone in a case, as you state, then the following makes me wonder: is it an Apple case? If so, then the case may not be strong enough and should give you the right to a replacement. Then there's the problem of all those people having this problem. Are all those phones bent? At about  the same place as yours is? If so, then I would argue that there is a design flaw in the phone that makes it too weak to withstand normal pressure. This means that it's not accidental bending, but a production/design fault, covered by warranty.

I really think that Apple cannot get away with this. There is a serious problem with the headphone jack. It not only makes many third party equipment unusable, but even the Apple earpads have this problem (in my case anyway).

For me, I made an appointment at the genius bar for coming Monday. I'm very curious to see what they will do. I will insist on a replacement (again) and the guarantee that this problem will not reoccur with the new phone. If they do not go for that, I want my money back and will leave Apple for good.

Come on Apple, how can you ruin a great piece of hardware in such a clumsy way? It's an earphone jack we're talking about! It has been an industry standard since the stone ages. No one, not even the cheapest manufacturer has managed to achieve what you did with the iPhone 6!

THey sent me pictures that claim to show that it is bent, which to me was completely out there... I got the phone back today and hen I just look at it I can't tell its bent. Laying it on a table doesnt even show that it's bent. I'm really disappointed by Apple service. I have a case from Apple, the Apple silicone case and ive had it on since day one, as well as a screen protector. If you looked at the phone you wouldn't even be able to tell it was used. The best part about talking to Apple support was when they said "it's a known issue that the iPhone 6/ 6plus bends" but somehow they aren't doing a thing about it. Get it together Apple...

I read somewhere that sending an email to Tim Cook directly may do something, so that's what I did... I'm sceptical that it'll actually do anything but it's worth a shot.

Good luck for your appointment! Hoping it'll turn out better for you.

I have exact same issue but only more serious and from day1 of buying this phone. I don't use iphone for music but as phone. I use analog headsets. My ipone6+ actually destroys the microphone. I am on a call, a perfectly running call. Suddenly a static noise will be heard and microphone is gone. Thereafter, no one will ever listen me using the headset mic. I have damaged about 10 headsets in last 5 months - thanks to iphone6+. The damaged 10 includes 4 apple earbuds and rest are a mix of SONY and Merkury brands. The same headsets worked perfectly on  my iphone5c and ipad4. But iphone6+ has screwed it. iPhone6+ has cost me decent amount of money already ~$250 in earbuds and their replacements. Finally, I have approached my SP and made a warranty replacement claim from the SP to send me a fixed iphone6+.

I hope apple has fixed this manufacturing defect by now. If not, I am screwed because I only use phone using headsets and I am definitely not a Bluetooth fan. I have kept iphone6+ in original factory lamination and whole things in protective cases. Hopefully factory lamination would protect me from finger print reader reading my finger prints by accident.

I'd been having problems for several months--Intermittent drop outs through aux/audio output. I bought several headphone cables to see if it was a cable.problem, but nothing seemed to help. After reading a couple of these posts about lint, I shot a couple of puffs of compressed air angled toward (but not straight into) the plug, and, voila, a little ball of black (like my pants) lint flew out. No problems since then. This saved me from having to buy a new car with bluetooth.

I just had some fluff in the end of the headphone jack. Once I removed this with a very small screw driver it was all good.

I had the same problem. My headphone speaker wasn't working. Neither did sms tones, YouTube sounds..But when I plugged in headphones everything worked fine.

I took tooth pick and rub the sensor in headphone jack, and solve the problem.
