Q: iphone 6 headphone jack Issues

Well, I have the same problem using my Native Union Moshi Pop Handset with my iPhone 6 and I thought I had a defective handset until I found this thread. The apple earbuds that came with the phone work fine, but not my handset. I get the music coming on and off randomly as well as Siri coming on and it disconnects my phone calls. Turns out my problem is indeed the metal ring on the base of the connector as has been mentioned previously in this thread. Thanks Afarzand for the earphone tip suggestion, I will try that.

QUICK WAY TO SEE IF YOU HAVE THE METAL RING PROBLEM: Gently poke the connector though a Post-It Note and then plug it in and see if it works normally.

Update: Used an old ear bud foam cover and it solved my problem completely. Just poked the connector right through it. So happy I don't have to buy a new handset or return my iPhone to the apple store for a replacement...would have been so irritated when the new handset would have done the same thing...hooray, thanks again Apple community!

Today I had some strange bug with my iPhone 6 Plus - 64 GB - Gold. First Time I was an early adopter and now the Problems start:

- had Teufel Aureol Real Headphones plugged in and was driving in the Bus while i liked to turn the Volume down, the iPhone cranked the Volume up and I could not stop it, doing that. I had to hold the Volume Down button while pausing the Music and then I restarted the Phone but in the meanwhile all eyes where on me... very annoying in the public

- today I wanted to listen to some music to calm down (other hardware issues on a pc) when I noticed that there is no sound... when trying to turn the volume up I noticed it writing "Headphones" on top. I tried everything, after a couple times of inserting the original earpods in to the iPhone 6, it finally worked again.

Maybe I should go to a Genius ...

I Called Apple and they told me I would need a new phone. I took it into the store and they found something deep in Jack hole. my head phones didn't work from the time I got the phone a few weeks ago and now they snap right in with no problem.

For those who has the problem of earphone failure( righ side volume different between left ) make sure to adjust the volume balance of the iphone, because my Iphone 6 PLUS suddenly the  right side earphone stopped function adequately, the volumen went down. after that i though that was a jack problem, even i was preparing the backup to get into apple store.

SOLUTION:  Settings --> General -->Accessibility --> "Hearing" and here there is a balance line, make sure to put in centre.

This worked for me! Definitely isolated it to the metal ring issue. Now, has anyone found a permanent work around for this? Will a replacement phone have this issue fixed? I've had mine for less than a week, so I'm worried that it won't be fixed in a replacement, and I'd rather not have to constantly use a piece of floss or a cut out of paper every time I'd like to use my headphones.

Thank you everyone who posted on this forum, you have been a great help.  I have been having the same issue while using my Bose headphones when connected to a jack extender that came with my Trianium battery case.  My phone would act as if it was possessed; Siri turns on randomly, music starts and stops/pauses when it wants, it even would change songs if I wiggled the headphone jack in the right way. After reading this thread I realized that YES the metal ring on the bottom of the headphone jack (extender in my situation) was definitely causing a problem.  My cheap, easy solution was to take a small piece of scotch tape and wrap it around the rubber part of the headphone jack leaving a small part of it to press down on the metal ring to prevent the metal ring from touching the phone.  It's cheap, easy and effective!

I had the same problems with the new iPad Air 2 and Beyerdynamic MMX 101 iE. Interestingly enough, the same MMX 101 iE do work with my iPhone 6, but not with iPad Air 2. I have a couple of Apple in-ears and they all work with iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2.

Has anybody found a 3rd party in-ear that have already solved this issue?

this reason and demonstration made the most sense to me.  I found it cumbersome to try to cover the exposed metal on the plugs - why not cover the metal around the receptacle end... the phone end?  My problem was using a 2.5 female to 3.5 male adapter for my headset (used in the car) to be able to be plugged in the the iphone 6.  When I used it and any jiggling, suddenly music would play (without an app running to turn off) AND i would get poor phone use.

i just put a small piece of Scotch tape over the bottom of the phone being sure not to cover the mic, and small utility knife to cut out the tape covering the hole... so far seemed to do the trick. I tested with one phone call and no music or dropped call if i jiggled the plug while on the phone.

I had a problem with the earphones not working with my new iPhone6 plus. Then, I went to Setting, General, Accessibility and turned off the Noise Cancellation. I also turned on and off the Hearing Aids. The earphones work fine now.

Your response is spot on.  People - Dental floss works great (waxed/mint  haha).  Just fixed two sets of non Apple ear buds with microphones and they both work perfect. The issue with non Apple ear buds is the base of the connector is not insulated so it shorts out against the phone.  The dental floss provides the necessary insulation.

I just got the iPhone 6 a few weeks ago to replace an Iphone 5c (worst phone ever).  I use my phone to run with music and Nike+ for Running.  About 16 miles into a 23 mile training run, my music randomly started to speed up, then Suri came on, and then voice command ... I thought OMG, it's possessed -- I had to stop running to address the issue.  Again, randomly while running, not touching or holding the phone.   I've been reading several comments from others with this same issue -- so annoying!!  Apple products are not what they used to be -- Quality Control seems to be a serious issue for these folks!  After reading suggestions posted by others, I pretty much disabled everything I could, particularly the voice control and Suri.  Thought I had the problem solved ... nope!  Last couple of days the music randomly turns on while the phone is sitting untouched.  THEN, I read your post about the tape and thought, why not give it a try, I've tried everything else.  You are correct about the tape! I took a small piece of redacting tape, poked a hole in it using headphone jack and then placed over the jack on the phone and plugged in my MCG headphones and to my delight the problem was solved.

Awesome.  Glad it helped… that’s why I posted my solution… my music would turn on too before the fix… too bad the design of the phone isn’t better… but an easy solution.

I was skeptical but this hack/fix seems to be working for me so far this morning.

I was having all the problems mentioned here, but was also getting mild electric shocks, what felt like static electric shocks, in my ears! Which I couldn't reproduce with the Apple EarPods. Not sure if anyone else experienced that, but it's unpleasant and more than a little worrisome.

YES!  It worked for me to cover that little metal lip.
