Q: Getting 3G toggle back in iOS 8 - Solved

All those missing the 3G toggle after updating to iOS 8 - here are some solution to try:

Mostly, everybody updated over the air(OTA) using Wi-Fi, something broke there & quite possibly also missed the included Carrier update.

As iOS 8 is a major jump, try Restoring through iTunes, it works.

You could also download the Firmware(.ipsw) file for your model & use click Shift/Option on Restore in iTunes.

Remember to backup your device in iTunes first.

Another Option is to go to an Authorized Apple Service Center & they will do it for you - tested & works.

You get your 3G toggle back in iOS 8 if your Carrier supports it.

Note : Applicable for users who had 3G toggle under Cellular in iOS 7.1.2 & lost it after updating to iOS 8

iPhone 5c, iOS 7.1.2, Windows 7

I had upgraded my iPhone 4s and I am getting the option to switch off 3G. Interesting thing is few of them are getting and few not. if that is a carrier patch then it will be same for everyone. It seems to be a glitch in the OS but again ow come the service center able to rectify it. Must be certain files are not getting updated while downloading. I will try to download in my friend handset tonight and check if the claim is correct.

Yes, that seems to be the case. But for some - now, even that is not working. Totally Confused !!!

Anyway, let us know how it goes.

You're getting the toggle because the iPhone 4s doesn't have LTE. The LTE toggle always shows up for me, even after a full iTunes upgrade and restore. I have an iPhone 5s on Vodafone India. I was advised by my network's customer care to downgrade to iOS 7.1.2. I did that and it is working. I am never upgrading to iOS 8 until this is fixed for good! I wouldn't recommend upgrading to anyone who needs this either!

Yes, that is correct the 4s is not LTE capable, so no LTE toggle. I did speak with Voda IN & subsequently left Feedback under using iPhone at Apple. I hope they provide a solution.

Update - The LTE toggle is active only on iPhone 5 onwards (i.e. all LTE capable devices only) &

cannot be changed to show 3G toggle.

There maybe some 3rd party Apps that restore Edge function, they are unofficial, may not always work & may also affect the functioning of your device.

This is something Apple needs to fix in consultation with local Carriers.

IF & When that happens, remains to be seen.

Please leave a Feedback for Apple under 'Using iPhone' to highlight your concerns.

Sandeep, since you (or your friends) downgraded to iOS 7.1.2 can you tell me what is the carrier version that shows up for Airtel. You can find that in Settings->General->About->Carrier. For me it shows Airtel 17.0 (iPhone 5 on iOS 8). If it's the same for iOS 7.1.2, then we can rule out the carrier update as the root cause for this issue and can push Apple to release a patch for this issue.

If your are not Airtel, can you please ask anyone of your friends who are on Airtel and using iPhone 5 or above with iOS 7.1.2 and update the same here.

    Thanks,

    Rajeev.

    @rajeevkvssp

I don't know about Airtel but with Vodafone, I got 17.0 in iOS 8 and I had 16.0 in 7.1.2.

However, I used a Chinese app to install a patch (doesn't need any hacking into the phone's filesystem) to enable 2G and it works.

Akhil, can you please tell me what is the app and how did you install it? I suspect it is not available in App Store.

Thw following method is confirmed working, though it involves installing some 3rd party Chinese apps. It works! You mileage may vary!

    1. Download PP: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/76759147/pp25.rar

    2. Download the Patch: https://mega.co.nz/#!4ZIQxSzY!wed9E-NvRf1e4ZMXBsc1WJT32qnfuazUc7gCpaB0Dmg

    3. Install PP

    4. Connect the phone to the computer

    5. Click the icon under the phone on the left pane

    6. Select the appropriate button to open an IPA

    7. Select the downloaded patch IPA file

    8. Let it install

    9. Open the app and trust it

    10. Select start patch

You can see the instructions here: http://www.miamiavenuesales.com/pdf/iOS8%20Instructions.pdf

To resume 3G, select close patch

Thanks for the info Akhil, but I am planning to hold on from applying that patch because that looks like it's gonna permanently disable 3G on my iPhone, which I dont want either. This is gonna be my last resort in the worst case scenario

I asked one of my friends, who is using iPhone 5 with iOS 7.1.2 and the carrier version that shows up in his phone is Airtel 16.0. Where as mine shows Airtel 17.0 on iOS 8.0.2. My friend's phone keeps asking him to update the carrier settings whenever he visits the Settings->General->About page in his iPhone (though he is on iOS 7.1.2). I advised him not to update his carrier settings (and iOS too) until this is sorted out.

Given, this new piece of information I believe the carrier bundle is the main culprit and I have a gut feeling that the "Enable 3G" toggle is going to disappear if we upgrade the carrier settings to Airtel 17.0 even on iOS 7.1.2. So, can't entirely blame Apple too although they have equal responsibility for this misery of ours. I believe these guys entered in to some sort of agreement to do this kind of thing.

If we could somehow get Airtel 16.0 carrier bundle version on iOS 8.0.2 then I think we are gonna get out 3G toggle back. BTW, the CS folks at Airtel I talked to don't have a clue about the carrier bundle version. They are advising me to deactivate my 3G plan. I was so frustrated trying to explain them the root cause. I mailed them the issue with some screen shots of the old and new versions. They said they will get back. Let's see where this goes. Will update this thread if I have something informative.

    Thanks,

    Rajeev.

I can confirm that the patch doesn't make your 3G go away permanently. You just turn off the patch to re-enable 3G. Even a reboot isn't necessary. Go ahead and apply it. I'm using it with no issues.

It's like you have a toggle in another app instead of settings. I don't think it's a big deal.

The very fact, Support is allowing method & links to be posted here - indicates something

    Hi Sandeep,

I have been using it since 3-4 days now. Works perfectly. Doesn't seem to break anything yet. Going to the service centre doesn't help. Those guys are as clueless as ever! I even called the Apple Customer care and requested them for a solution and that didn't help too. They suggested that I sit tight and wait for their fix. Also, they advised me to tell my friends to not upgrade.

The problem is that Apple doesn't seem to care about this. Their market is the US and their 1st wave launch locations.

You know how much Apple doesn't give diddly squat about India? The Goa Airport in Apple Maps is still called Colombo Airport! I have sent them a million requests to change it but it seems that they have an amazing location based feedback/ email filter that shuts everything other than American customers out. As an Indian, this offends me. I hope they get banned in India.

Hope this helps you guys. If you wish to wait for Apple to throw you a bone, well, keep waiting. The iPhone 5s is probably going to be my last iPhone purchase, ever!

    -Akhil

P.S.: This patch was made by the Gevey/ R SIM community or something.

    Hi Akhil,

Thanks, will check when i update to iOS 8.0/02. I downgraded mainly for the 3G toggle & the page Scrolling within Settings &

Notes was very jerky. Of course a reset/restore would've fixed that.

Let's hope that 3rd party App, doesn't send personal data to Chinese servers

If something changes - do let us know.

    Thanks for responding quickly.

You can try installing the patch using something else. iTunes may also work. Other iPhone management software also should do the trick (like iFunbox, etc.).
