Q: Amnesiac Mac Mini Network

Hi ,

     I have a late 2012 Mac Mini Server ( not using Server App tho ) 2 x 1tb HDs + 16 gb Ram running 10.9.5 Mavericks . I also have 4 x WD Thunderbolt Duo drives

daisy-chained  and an Lg Cd/Dvd drive . No screen just HDMI out to 63" Samsung plasma and Screensharing to 2010  17" Macbook Pro 2.8ghz  + 8 gb Ram .

This laptop never , ever loses wifi no matter what part of the house it is in . The Mini however is constantly dropping it and today it seems to not want to find its             way home at all !  The router is a relatively new Zyxel with latest firmware and Airport Extreme is Access Point .

Ive read troubleshooting articles on osxdaily , Macrumors , Macworld and many others to no avail . Is there a way to get back to Year Zero and start over ?

Any tips welcome ,

~M~

P.S. All other iPhones/iPads never drop out

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), Oct 2012 2.6ghz i7 Quad-Core 16gb

Do you have any USB drives connected?

Is the Mini buried in a cabinet or is anything on top of the Min?

    Hi ,

Thanks for the reply . Only USB device connected is the Lg SuperMultiBlue drive ; HDMI out to Tv ; Thunderbolt out to 1st HD Storage .

The unit is on top of a table in the Living Room beside Lg and Bluetooth Keyboard/Trackpad .Drives are underneath along with BD Players

            and HiFi kit .

When it worked , it worked beautifully but this time nothing can get it back again . Doing Hardware Test as we speak , Green across the board ,

    Very Frustrating ,

Have you taken the Mini apart other than maybe upgrading the Ram?

Nope, Ram apart and that was the week it was bought in November 2012 . It was returned for a replacement to a failing HD under warranty about a year ago  and that was the last time the cover was off . Im beginning to fear that I may have to wipe it and Start Over from scratch which can invariably end up losing other settings and software . This problem has gone on so long I have no faith in any of my backups unfortunately .

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.

    Step 1

Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.

    Step 2

Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.

    Step 3

If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.

    Step 4

Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences and unlock the settings, if necessary. Select the Power Adapter  tab, if there is one. Uncheck the box marked

              Wake for Wi-Fi network access

    if it's checked.

    Step 5

Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.

    Step 6

    Reset the System Management Controller.

    Step 7

    Reset the PRAM.

    Step 8

Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.

    Step 9

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

Many Thanks for your  detailed rely , I will be keeping it for future reference I haven't found Wireless Diagnostics much help as it just gave ' Cannot be joined ' messages without saying why ? I did delete any previous Airport references in the Keychain and I will disable Bluetooth in future though it will leave me without control if Screensharing should fail as it does when the Mini drops off the network .

Funnily enough , I did disconnect the only USB connected unit ( old Lg drive ) and ran the Apple Hardware Test as CS advised  and after rebooting , deleting the old network and adding it again all is well ..........for now . Ive been here before but at least I will know how to troubleshoot next time .

    Thanks again
