iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Ever since upgrading to IOS 8, including IOS 8.01, 8.02 and 8.1 I had the wellknown Wifi issue.

wifi speeds dropping from 120mbps to about 2mbps @ 5ghz in within a minute after connecting to the wifinetwork. often i couldn't even surf at all. but the wifi signal was always strong.

With every update i was hoping for a solution from Apple but it never came.

Tried everything that can be found on the internet.

Resetting the network settings.

Disabling "wifi networking" under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services.

Reinstalling my Ipad from scratch

Used different routers and different setups.

Automatic ip's and fixed ip's and different dns servers just to be sure.

Nothing worked. The only workaround is switching to a 2.4Ghz network.

So i was doing some tests and found THE solution, but i don't like it all.

One of the biggest changes in IOS 8 is the ability to use airplay without a network. by using a wifi connection in combination with bluetooth.

And here lies the problem.

I disconnected al my Airplaydevices from my network. Denon AV-amplifier AVR2113, Pioneer wireless speaker XW SMA3 and an airport express.

Et voila... My Ipad is back to normal. fast... no very fast internet connection and stable as ****. Just like iOS 7 was.

Working with it for a couple of hours now without any trouble at all.

But do i connect one Airplay device to the network the wifi is not stable anymore and extremely slow again on my ipad air.

My Macbook running mac os x mavericks doesn't have these issues, neither does my iphone 5S. and they are also on the same 5ghz network.

So I can create and recreate the issue and create a work around... Apple please come with a solution that makes me able to use airplay an ipad (on ios8) on a 5ghz network! like in iOS 7!!!!

New iPhone 6 connected to home WiFi (Verizon) - results of speedtests using OOKLA app. Home network has 50/50 Mbps down/up:

  • Phone started to slow down noticeably on the wi-fi.
  • Side by side comparison to iPhone 5c - the six was stunningly slower
  • Speed test 1- 7PM Sunday: 2.51 Mbps down; 1.72 up
  • Speed test 2 - 9:30PM: 1.75 down; .76 up
  • Speed test 3 - 1:30PM Monday: .09 down; .24 up
  • Reboot the iPhone (power off and back on)
  • Speed test 4 - 1:40 PM (after reboot): 22.24 down, 18.01 up

I'll try to keep testing every few hours and see if this gradual slowdown repeats.

Looks like some of you have the cellular iPads. Alsha 7 made the comment about turning off your "mobile/cellular data". Great workaround. My guess would be there is a bug in the code where the WiFi connection and mobile data aren't flopping back and forth and not staying persistent. All my iPads are WiFi only and I don't own an iPhone. That is probably why I'm not seeing the issue.

Hardware chips are not damaged by a software update. In an earlier post, someone mentioned "WiFi device driver" and they are spot on. The OS (IOS 8) in this example, communicates to the WiFi chip though a device driver. In the Windows world, it is referred to as the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer). Unless that chip is an EPROM (Erasable/Programmable Read Only Memory), then there is no direct write to that chip. The device drivers are software code and I've seen poorly written ones that crash (aka memory leaks). I think iPads run hot already. They also have great thermal protection. Mine has shutdown at a gig due to being directly in the sun. So even if the code caused the WiFi chip (probably embedded on the board) to process unnecessary cycles and cause it to heat up, the thermal protection would shutdown the iPad. For those of you who think the IOS 8 update damaged your hardware, think again.

Before iOS 8 my iPad Air would occassionally have frustrating delays (running really slow going from one site to another, or navigating within some sites) but in the back of my mind, I figured a future update would take care of the problem...as this is my 3rd iPad I've gotten use to issues with Safari. And then I dowloaded iOS 8 and it's ridiculously slow. The "wheel" just spins and spins and half the time it will eventually change pages, while other times it just sits there spinning. The way I would "unstick" it in the past was simply put it in airplane mode for a few seconds and that would move things along, but that doesn't work with the issues with iOS 8.

Earlier today I tried turning off the location services as someone on here suggested and that worked well. After awhile I turned it back on and I still was flying pretty good. Then all of a sudden things began to bog down. I ran Speedtest and my first test showed Ping at 96 ms and downloads at 0.04 Mbps. So I ran it again and got Ping 60 and download at 7.60. Then I did the old hold the home button while pressing the on/off button and shut it down for a few seconds. Powered it back up and ran Speedtest. My numbers were back to normal at Ping 11 ms and downloads at 56.86 Mbps. When Safari hangs up like it's doing with this latest update, it makes me seriously wonder how Apple justify doing roll outs like this. This is NOT a new issue for them, so you'd think they'd have figured it out by now. I've had 3 iPads since 9/2010...and every one of them has dealt with WIFI/Safari issues.

By the way, our router is a Netgear R6300 1GB, so it's no slouch.

Hi, I been using this IPad about a year and today I just upgraded to iOS 8 with the battery charged 100%. Then I notice my Wi-Fi connection kinda slow after the update 😕 then I just hit settings selected forget this network, restarted the iPad and then I connected to the same Wi-Fi and everything is O.K. 🙂 I just let the iPad idle with Wi-Fi on to test and went to work and right now I have 55% after reading my email, checking the tips app and typing here to reply this answer.

For you guys using iphone 5/5s/6/6+, try these:

Whenever connected to wifi, turn off your "mobile/cellular data" (setting->mobile/cellular) and also turn off your bluetooth.

It has worked for me for 3 days on iphone 5/5s/6/6+.

Simply turn it on again whenever you leave wifi area to make sure you have 3G/LTE data connection again.

Hope this help!

You can turn off randomization by turning on location services. Details follow. I do not know if this will help with the wifi problem. I'm posting how because one poster wanted to try.

euclid inc points to a blog post:

What happened to IOS 8 MAC Address randomisation?

euclid incmentions this blog:

http://blog.airtightnetworks.com/ios8-mac-randomization-analyzed/

Which reports:

In iPhone 5s, MAC randomization happens only under the following conditions:

  • Phone is in sleep mode (display off, not being used)
  • Wi-Fi should be ON but not associated
  • Location services should be OFF in privacy settings

iMac 10,1 w Mavericks 10.9.5 and iPad Air iOS8.0

This worked for me:

1. Plug iOS8 iPad Air into iMac w iTunes11.

2. iTunes11/Devices/iPad/Summary/Options

3. UNCHECK both Open iTunes when . . ., and Sync w this iPad over Wi-Fi.

4. Hit APPLY (DO NOT Skip Apply)

5. Unplug iPad Air

REBOOT iMac

1. iTunes11/Devices/iPad/Summary/Options

2. CHECK both, Open iTunes when . . ., and Sync w this iPad over Wi-Fi.

3. Hit APPLY (DO NOT Skip Apply)

iTunes11 now sees my iPad Air and continues to see it through Wi-Fi. Maybe the simple

APPLY that I had skipped earlier. Not sure why it was necessary to uncheck and check.

they didn't specifically say it had to be 8.0.2, that just happened to be the latest update available this morning. I did a fresh recover without backup as a new device. What can I say, my iPad had not worked all week but has been completely fine all day now. And believe me, I spent many hours fiddling with solutions from forum posters, admittedly not the 8.8.8.8 DNS thing though................

Hey guys,

It's me again,

Updated my OS to 8.0.2 after the catastrophic 8.0 update that rendered my phone useless.

I tried the google DNS thing, didn't work,

Tried resetting all network settings with no use.

Finally, I saw a few posts recommending that you reset your entire settings, disable WIFI networking under Privacy>location services then rebooting.

Did that, been 20mins, so far all good. let's see...

Sep 27, 2014 5:41 AM in response to Essex Boy 51

OK, my morning update....

It's b a a c k...

After a full reinstall, fresh setup, wifi changes... It worked for about 5 hours correctly.

Now, on iOS 8.0.2 Back to the same problems.

Today's fix (and it is working)... I turned off the 5ghz completely on my router.

The iPad Mini Retina is only connecting on 2.4ghz and seems to be working. So much for MIMO...

Waiting patiently for a fix, Apple!

Sep 27, 2014 9:10 AM in response to E-2043

I did a fresh full install of iOS 8.0.2 from itunes on my laptop last night. A real pain to reinstall all of my apps, but if it fixes the video streaming/WiFi inconsistency, it's worth the trouble. So far, WiFi is functioning as normal, but I will update at the day goes along. One thing that did happen differently as well is that all of a sudden I have the option for the photo library (beta) now where I didn't on any of my updated devices previously. Afraid to turn it on though! Probably going to have to fresh install my 5s as well because the WiFi is just switching to LTE or 3G at random now. I agree with all of the previous posts as well wondering why Apple hasn't officially acknowledged the WiFi issue. We shouldn't have to be trying "fixes" for a major device function to work properly. Anyway, I will test out the connectivity as the day progresses.

The bug reporting tool shows you how to gather iPad logs. Look for the wifi row. Connect to itunes to pull the log. I believe the basic developer accounts are free and you will be able to submit a bug report.

Here are the places to report bugs:

Get an account at

http://developer.apple.com/ then submit a bug report to http://bugreporter.apple.com/

Once on the bugreporter page,

-- click on New icon

-- See if you need to attach a log file or log files, clicking on Show instructions for gathering logs. Scroll down to find the area or application that matches the problem.

-- etc.
