iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

You did, of course, confirm that the Sky router does, in fact, comply with the old spec? I'm not interested in what they claim that they comply with. I'm interested in whether or not they really do comply.

First, When did I say anything about Sky router??

Second, its strange that you doubt ALL routers saying do they "really" comply? But you DO NOT doubt that it could be Apple afterall which does not comply with standards properly.

SInce I had the factory reset done, it's been as good as new with no WiFi-issues or slow connections neither at home or on the mobile connection (that I'm using now.) I have not restored the backup I made before the reset, so I did it as "set up a new iPad", and then I just put back on the apps ai use the most via App Store. Perhaps it used some stored network settings in some file on iOS 7 that when upgraded to 8.x did not work as intended, and performing the factory reset and setting it up as new wiped out all traces of any such thing and allowed it to set up network-things "the iOS 8 way".

The upgrade to 8.3 only worked for a few days, back to dropping out again

I had already tried deleting phone & restoring from backup so will now setting up as new phone. Whilst I can reinstall all the apps, how do I get all my photos & tunes back - does sync restore these but not settings (possibly corrupt)?

We are getting into "flat earth" territory again.

The device worked to the router before the upgrade and didn't after - so before the upgrade they both complied to the spec or else they would not have worked, but after upgrading IOS you are suggesting the router suddenly stopped being compliant.

It has been well posted many times that no one with issues after the IOS upgrade had any connectivity problems with their router, old or new, from any Wintel, Android or any other non-Apple device. So the router remained compliant with those devices, but became non-compliant with only Apple devices and only after the upgrade. Now what changed .......?

In our family, there are two iPhones, one iPad and one iPod, all with 8.3 and not one is experiencing any WiFi problem whatever. Perhaps there is a different explanation for the problems, the router perhaps? Of course, you can always Google "flat earth" for a solution.

In our family, there are three iPhones, two iPads and two Mac Book Prosi all with latest software, in addition I have three work laptops (2x Lenovo, 1xHP) two personal laptops (Lenovo & Compaq) as well as a Sony TV and an Internet radio all using Wi-fi and only one device is experiencing any WiFi problems, an iPhone 4s, which worked flawlessly before upgrading to ios8. Perhaps there is a different explanation for the problems, and it's not the router..

IT has been said time and time and time again, this issue only affects some devices, so the fact you keep telling us yours are not affected is meaningless.

Considering that the vast majority of users have not reported any problems, perhaps you should investigate what's unique about your environment. Router, perhaps?

I Know. I had the same problem with my iPod touch 5c after the iOS8 update came out. First, I powered off my iPod, then I turned it on, then I reset my network settings, I connected to my current network I have at my home, and it still did not work. After that fiasco, I tried it again, then it worked. But the way I got it to work was by going to my favorite wi-fi app, (music) and I went iTunes Radio to listen to music. It worked, and I have no idea if the NEW problem I have on my Apple iPod touch has to do with what I did with the wi-fi. My time on my device went forwards for hours, so I change it to the correct time every morning. This is not my big worry though. I can deal without the time being correct. But, NOW, Apple will not let me sign into my Apple ID. I could just simply not download a few apps I wanted, so I tapped Get+ Then Install+. It asked me for my Apple ID password, so I typed it in, the apps started to load. Then It went back to the GET+ button. So I went to my settings, I signed out, then tried to sign back in. It did not let me. I went to iTunes Radio because it always lets me sign in there, but I typed in my Apple ID and password, then it said LOADING with the loading circle, and it stopped loading, and kept my Apple ID and password on the screen and still said continue! I pressed it over and over again, but did it never let me sign in. It did not say I had the incorrect Apple ID or Password typed in. What do I do? I had my friend try & Into her Apple ID on my iPod, but it did not work either. So, I made a new Apple ID. & Into her Apple ID on my iPod, but it did not work either. So, I made a new Apple ID. My iPod would not let me sign in with that either. So I need your help. Apple quit on my friend 4 times. Once, she had an Apple iPod 4s that stopped working for no reason. Then, her iPhone 4s. Then her brothers iPhone 4s, and her mothers iPhone 5c. She quit on Apple, started using Google, and it works perfectly. I'm about to do the same, because I already had 2 iPods that stopped for no reason, no cracks, never dropped them, or anything, and since those were refurbished, I got a BRAND NEW Apple iPod 5c, no cracks, never dropped it, or anything. And guess what? I'm NOT going to let that happen to my iPod touch 5c, and I'm 99.9 % sure I'm switching to Google. I hope you can help me, thanks. I hope I helped you too.

Hi All,

I had the wifi grayed out problem on my iphone and i was awaiting on every IOS release hoping that it would fix the issue. I just want to inform you all that this wifi issue is caused by a hardware problem (the wifi chip becomes defective and gives this problem. Apple has to answer this for the quality of wifi chip).

I replaced the wifi chip in a local mobile repair shop and now the phone works perfectly alright. The cost for repair is 55$.

So please refrain from waiting for next IOS update to fix the issue. Please replace your wifi chip and start using your devices.

IInteresting. Got Apple watch early today. Now I never have used Bluetooth before but obviously the watch necessitates it now for pairing. By having it on it has halved my wifi download througput on the iPhone. Other devices without Bluetooth on don't suffer such as the iPad. I can get the speed back by turning Bluetooth off and then disconnecting and reconnecting to the wifi. But this is another iOS 8 gremlin. Interestingly 5 ghz wifi is ok, this quirk is only evident on 2.4 ghz band. I re iterate the other iPads maintain speed fine on 2.4 ghz so here is a case of Bluetooth negatively impacting the wifi speed
