iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Agree that' s the logical argument I use. None of my other devices are affected ( including other Apple devices ) and the only thing that changed on the device that is affected is the version of iOS.

There is obviously some uncommon combination of configuration, hardware, apps?, or other factors which lie at the heart of this. I have also found the situation is not as bad as it was originally, but still at the "very annoying" level. Apple did include a fix for wi-fi issues in one of the 8.x upgrades thus confirming there was a problem, but so far no fix for me.

When you ignore all the noise on this forum, there does appear to be only two solutions that appear to work with the problems that affect my iPhone 4s and the devices of others, when you have exhausted all the resetting, restoring to factory settings etc., these are either change your device, or change your router/AP.

Whilst some consider this an acceptable solution, I don't. Something changed from ios7 to 8 that caused the problem, and some of us will put up with frequent device resets to restore connectivity until Apple come up with a proper fix.

That's your choice since there is nothing for Apple to fix.

Bootsox, I believe we are of the same opinion as regards the wi- fi issues. I am aware of a number of "off topic" posts being made and subsequently being deleted of late, so my respectful advice is to stick with our logical arguments until we get a proper solution, and just simply ignore the "noise" and keep plugging away until we get this sorted.

I had thought that 8.4 hadn't made any difference, but I was wrong

After I updated to 8.3 (which addressed Wi-Fi issues) my iPhone was much more stable. Since 8.4 I've noticed when I get home it does not connect to my router automatically, I need to search for the network each time - even if I'm in the same room as the router

The only change was to the software.

Comment months ago (someone with points so not a zero) referring to Apple support "They are so arrogant they don't acknowledge a problem."

And back in October 2014 "Ok i justy got an call back from an Apple Senior Advisor... he told me the Apple engineers are aware of the Wifi problems and will release an fix for it as update soon. He couldnt tell me if it be fixed with the 8.1 update coming.... Bu most important it is on Apple radar and will be fixed either wit 8.1 or an future update !!!" So Apple admitted to the problem 9 months ago

Noticed that even though this thread was started in September 2014, PP didn't make any comment for 4 months (page 111) - and normal solution to Reset, Restore etc, even though that had been talked about at length. Someone said "I suspect that there are many peoples having iOS 8 issues and they are not aware of them!" which got the usual earth is flat comment. And of course "Since the vast majority of users have not reported problems, I'll stick with the understanding that your problems, whatever they are, are unrelated to the IOS."

Unfortunately as we know, 8.1 (nor 8.2) fixed the problem. 8.3 seemed to help, but 8.4 has, for some, made it worse again

Unfortunately the nature of the wi- fi issue means for many that resetting and / or making other network changes may make it appear to be resolved only for issues to return, minutes, hours or often days later. As a consequence there have been a number of posts from people who have genuinely believed they have found solutions, but for those of us who have had problems since iOS 8.0 day one, we will have tried those solutions before and know the relief tend to be only short lived. This is a fundamental problem using these forums in that there is no follow up. You cannot email let alone pick up the phone and ask these people if their solution is still working and therefore did really fix their problems. We have unfortunately been plagued by those with nothing genuine to offer themselves, calling out these posted "fixes" as examples where people have succesfully resolved the issues themselves, but without any actual evidence that the "fix" was not in fact just a temporary reprieve, and berating those of us who still have issues as they cannot accept even the very idea there might actually still be a real issue with iOS for some devices.

After seeing comment from insiderinformation I looked back at the beginning of this thread & saw you were posting about issues over 9 months ago, so in all that time hundereds (that have posted) of people must have imagined the problems

And unfortunately I'm guilty of posting that the problem was fixed ( with 8.3) then I said 8.4 hadn't made any difference - but a few days later the problem returned

So do I carry out a full reset yet again? Whilst restoring isn't a major problem, I then have to re-pair my phone to the various routers at friends etc

What "actual evidence" would you accept? Do you wish these people to ship their devices to you? Or perhaps you'd accept a notarized sworn statement?

In my situation I only need to restart the phone to restore wi-fi, but sometimes it may take a couple of attempts ( I used to frequently get the wi-fi enable button greyed out at the first restart, but this hasn't happened since 8.4) and this "fix" may last all day. It does seem however that the symptoms are not consistent across thone device with issues, so this may not work for you.
