iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Many have been contacted, including those of us that have no problems, so what should we make of that?

3150+ replies, many of them from the aforementioned users with no problems tells us what? If you want to dangle the numbers in front of your argument please tell us how many of those 3150+ replies are from users with the issue and (b) how many unique users this actually represents?

I am aware that you and the other expert have never experienced any problems and I'm glad you haven't

But just for a moment consider this; a number of people have ongoing difficulties. Of these they have various different devices (iphone 5, 5S, 5C, 4S, different ipads), they are using numerous different routers. In fact the only constant factor is IOS8

So does this not suggest the problem could be caused by software?

No.

Absolutely. You should stay at IOS-3.

I am not going to do the research for you like I did regarding the alleged "fixes" you posted before. You can do so yourself if you wish. Indeed some of the 3150+ replies are from the few users like you that post no issues and indeed some are from repeat posters like myself. This is not unique to this thread, the iOS 7 thread behaved the same and the fact that the ratio of posts in 8 vs. 7 is over 10 to 1 is an indication of the difficulties. You are free to believe as you wish, a prerogative for those of us that live in free societies. As they say, you can lead a horse to water but.....

Have a good day 😎

In fact this also has been reported on IOS7, iOS6 and iOS5 (in this forum, look around for others), as well as Samsung and HTC devices

There will always be people posting about Wi-Fi issues.... On any iOS, any Androids, any Macs or any PCs.... However, while your statement above is indeed correct, it is worth noting that this thread on iOS 8 Wi-Fi contains 3,150+ replies whereas the thread you mentioned earlier regarding iOS 7 Wi-Fi contains 255 replies. - a good indicator of the difficulties some are having with iOS 8 vs. 7.

I am delighted that you are not having issues, the vast majority are not, but those that are have significant problems indeed. Apple is well aware of this. They have contacted many here who are having issues, myself included on two occasions over 2 hours long. Apple has collected logs, router/ISP configurations, and other data of relevance. As I have also mentioned, the problem existed on Yosemite as well prior to 10.4.4. With the return of mDNSResponder in 10.4.4 most of those issues were resolved. And yes again, there will always be some complaining about 10.4.4 as well... nature of the beast!!!

Toodle pip... 😎

What has 10.4.4 got to do with this? Where there WiFi problems for you that far back? Perhaps you should update to a later OSX. Yosemite 10.10.5 is great and perhaps worth a try if your hardware can handle it. No noticeable WiFi issues either.

I am not going to do the research for you

Have a good day 😎

Oh I have done the research, and at the time I did it (>2700 replies) less than a quarter of the posts in the thread were by unique posters who had this issue.

Not being prepared to "do the research" just means that you are not prepared.

You have a nice day now.

My reference to 10.4.4 was a typo, thanks for catching it. I am running 10.10.4 and if you would have read my previous post on that same page you would have seen my comments: "On June 30 Apple released an update to OS X, 10.10.4, and replaced DiscoveryD with the former mDNSResponder for "improved networking reliability” as listed in their release notes. I updated my rMacBookPro to 10.10.4 at the time and I am pleased to report that I have had no Wi-Fi issues whatsoever. iOS 8.4.1 still uses DiscoveryD. According to Apple, iOS 9 will be released in the fall and hopefully will include Wi-Fi improvements as well."

I also thank you for reminding me that 10.10.5 is out, have not have time to update yet but will do so later today. As with 10.10.4 I don't expect any Wi-Fi issues either, my 10.10.4 has been rock solid (as have my Dells) on the same router/ISP used by my iOS devices who do encounter issues, fortunately not as severe as others report here.

Evening all,

Just want to clarify i'm not going mad here.

My setup is a iPhone 6 64GB (running 8.4.1) and an Asus N66U (2.4G/5G wifi) with 80mb/20mb fibre. My iPhones wifi is driving me absolutely insane. My problem is random disconnects from it. Twitch just stops streaming and won't reconnect, Hearthstone randomly disconnects as and when. All of this happens no matter how close or far away I am from the router. The phone shows that I am always connected to wifi, it doesn't drop back to 3/4G or anything like that even when in the middle of a disconnect but it is obvious it is momentarily dropping the connection regardless.

I have tried everything, rebooting the modem/router, changing the routers firmware, full restore of the phone, upgrading from a 5S to 6 (5S had similar issues). I am now out of options. I am now at the point where I will be satified that it is an iOS issue and nothing wrong my end. Can somebody clarify?

If iOS 9 doesn't resolve the problem then my hand will be forced to go to Android.

Nick, thanks for your post. Please give me a little time, I am working on something else at the moment. I will be glad to give you a non-troll response later this afternoon. As in the past I will concentrate on technical issues and attempt to help you. An no, you are not going mad here. Polite and hopefully helpful comments to follow.... 🙂
