iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Let's see what Nick reports back on when he turns off Airplay devices and Bluetooth at home. Maybe the reason he sees no problems at work is because a corporate environment are not going to have things like Airplay to trip his phone's connection up. Hopefully he can eliminate these as possible causes - if it does improve things then at the very least it's a workaround until iOS 9.

That certainly should be tried, nothing to lose but, "maybe" is not helpful, if there is a difference in the environments whether or not brought on by Corporate policy it may tell us more than we now know. Does the workplace block ports, does it use 2.4 or 5ghz bands, or is it the sun/moon alignment at the office that is simply more favorable. Maybe's, Should haves and Possibly's are another way of saying "I don't know why"

My own meagre research has concentrated on antennae and location, both of which have a significant effect on reception. Antennae are what they are, too small for proper reception over a 360deg radius, that's where location comes in. Using a Tektronix RF analyser I mapped my house transmission (polar chart) and found many areas of low signal strength, some only a foot or two from a high strength area. I still don't see a systemic issue with software, just the usual RF weirdness carried out at meagre signal strengths in a multi path rich environment.

Then how do you explain the fact that reception wasn't a problem with iOS7x for most users, but is a problem with iOS8x. Meager* btw.

Wrong again.

Adjective[edit]

meagre (comparative meagrer, superlative meagrest)

  1. Having little flesh; lean; thin.  [quotations ▼]
Nothing will grow in this meagre soil.
He was given meagre piece of cake that he swallowed in one bite.
  2. Deficient or inferior in amount, quality or extent; paltry; scanty; inadequate; unsatisfying.  [quotations ▼]
  3. (mineralogy) Dry and harsh to the touch (e.g., as chalk).

Stanky, don't sweat it... Regarding the spelling, he is right of course, he is using the British style instead of our version, "meager". I am an American (by choice if I may add as I was not born here, learned English later in life) but I spent considerable time in the UK as an ex-pat, a favourite country of mine as I greatly enjoyed my times there (note my spelling of favorite). Terms such as meagre, centre, programme, etc. are their standard. Try car trunk vs. boot!!! Considering that it is their language to begin with which we later adapted, we have no right to challenge. John Cleese of Monty Python's fame was on late night TV a while back and was asked about the differences between the UK and the US. This was rehearsed of course, but he said that he could think of three, "we speak English, you don't, when we hold a World Series for a particular sport we invite teams from more than one country, and....." the last one not suitable for here.

Regarding the comments about Wi-Fi, as I previously mentioned on page 211 "There will always be people posting about Wi-Fi issues.... On any iOS, any Androids, any Macs or any PCs... However, it is worth noting that this thread on iOS 8 Wi-Fi contains 3,150+ replies whereas the thread regarding iOS 7 Wi-Fi contains 255 replies - a good indicator of the difficulties some are having with iOS 8 vs. 7."

iOS 9 is just around the corner - per Apple to be released in the fall. Hang in there.

This 3150 replies is a handy red herring isn't it. Many of those replies are from you, many are from me.

There are in fact substantially less than 3150 relevant replies, many are simply argument and repetition by those (me for one) who do not agree, don't suffer the issue or just need to complain about something. There are less than 700 individuals in the thread so 3150 does not represent the number of users with the issue. Let's stay on the up and up with the meagre sample and not try to inflate it.

Search Google for problems with IOS7 wifi reception, or IOS6, or Android phones etc and you will see that there are fewer differences in distribution than you think.

This is quite true, fall is the scheduled release date but, no-one here knows what the final code will contain, and if they do they may not speak to it. IOS9 may cure problems, it may not, or it may just introduce new ones. I know the grass is always greener but it is wise to wait and see if the lawn thrives before raising hopes.

Please guys it's been a week since I bought my first iPhone In my life (every phone I had till now was Samsung)...it's iPhone 6 and I fell in love with it but now I'm suffering from painfully slow wifi connection..Intermittent dropping connection..everything seems fine I have a good wifi signal apearance but nothing in my iPhone 6 that requires internet connection works..my viber my whatsapp my paid call recorder..a simple browsing became a nightmare..please guys help it's not a cheap device where I live right now and there's no genius no replacement no nothing here.. I tried every method written here but nothing solves my problem..I'm so sad I even cried when I knew it's a bug problem and nothing I do will help unlese the company do something for us in the next IOS9 and I'm not so hopeful.

Aug 28, 2015 5:29 AM in response to xanda1983

Xanda, just hang in there, I will try to help. Please answer the following questions first, ok?

1. Are you trying to use your phone at home and if so do you have other devices also on Wi-Fi?

2. If you have other devices on Wi-Fi, do they work OK? Is the phone the only one having issues?

3. Have you tried using your phone on wifi at public places like a coffee shop and if so, does it work ok there?

4. Have you tried it at a friends house on their wifi?

5. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Since you just got the phone, where did you purchase it from? Can it be taken in for an exchange?

Please answer the above and we can take it from there. What we try next depends on the answers. It could be defective hardware, it could be something wrong with the router, it could be defective settings, the list is long so we need your answers. And yes it could be the dreaded bug that has plagued many here but let's not assume that yet.... ok?

elcpu I'm so glad and grateful you responded to me..but say what? after leaving my iPhone 6 on the table in my room for 24 hours it's been cured miraculously

i'm so happy right now...but I did the following steps before leaving it..

* After erasing all content and resetting my iPhone 6 as a new one..(which I did before countless time but did not work for me).

* I purchased an app called Smart Memory with my painfully slow connection and used all it's features.

at first nothing changed and i tested my wifi and it was still the same and I was so sad like • I hate you iPhone 6 • and left it on the table grabed my Samsung s6 and out to the sunshine..when I came back it was like a different phone..

i do not see the need to answer your questions now..but if you want me to, I'll do it gladly..and if it happened to me again I'll crawl back to this forum crying again hahaha.

Thank you again for your caring.

My pleasure, Xanda. Glad that all is well.... No need to answer my questions now of course, except perhaps the last one, #5 - and I don't need the answer but you might. With a new phone, you do not deserve that experience - I would still check into the possibility of an exchange if feasible. I have been following this thread since November 2014, have not missed a post since, and there have been instances of fixes that worked for a while but only to revert to the old behaviour again.

I had not heard of Smart Memory but I will check it out, so you taught me something, thank you!

I do have a request. Whether the phone is working well or not, would you please come back here in a week or two and post again? The feedback would be appreciated, not just by me....

Best,

elcpu

OMG you were right it came back again, the same issue, the same problem..i remember now the first day when i unlocked my iphone 6, the wifi connection was so slow comparing to my other devices but i did not suspect anything could be wrong with it..I mean who could believe that something as new and beautiful as my iphone 6 have any major problem like that..

These past two days when my wifi connection came back it was like heaven and i became addicted to my iphone..God I even purchased more apps from the app store..what should I do now?.. First I have to answer your questions before switching to panic mode again..right? Let's begin.

1- I have four other Samsung phones and an HP laptop and the wifi at my home is fast and furious on them, only my Iphone is crawling..i think that answers your Q2 too.

3- I tried at a restaurant and it was the same slowness and dropping and safari freezing..and it's the same with using 3G network from my sim card service.

4- No, not on a friend's house wifi..but the restaurant has wifi either..so it's basically the same right?

5- My father is a traveller because of his job..and i'm with him of course..and right now we are staying at a country named Iraq, at it's capital Baghdad..I bought it from an ordinary store here but the Iphone was new and super locked..i unlocked it with my own two hands..so there is no hope for an exchange.

Please I just want to diagnose my problem..and I want to know for sure if IOS9 will do something for me.

If they released ios9 and the problem still the same i might sell it for a low price..because i can't tolerate a phone without internet or with a slow one..that is the only solution for me right now.

I think it's my fate to come to this country and buying a super device like an Iphone from here, only to be defected among million other iphones around the world..i'm so sad guys..

sorry for my bad English, I'm not a native speaker.

Thank you elcpu 🙂.
