iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Ever since upgrading to IOS 8, including IOS 8.01, 8.02 and 8.1 I had the wellknown Wifi issue.

wifi speeds dropping from 120mbps to about 2mbps @ 5ghz in within a minute after connecting to the wifinetwork. often i couldn't even surf at all. but the wifi signal was always strong.

With every update i was hoping for a solution from Apple but it never came.

Tried everything that can be found on the internet.

Resetting the network settings.

Disabling "wifi networking" under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services.

Reinstalling my Ipad from scratch

Used different routers and different setups.

Automatic ip's and fixed ip's and different dns servers just to be sure.

Nothing worked. The only workaround is switching to a 2.4Ghz network.

So i was doing some tests and found THE solution, but i don't like it all.

One of the biggest changes in IOS 8 is the ability to use airplay without a network. by using a wifi connection in combination with bluetooth.

And here lies the problem.

I disconnected al my Airplaydevices from my network. Denon AV-amplifier AVR2113, Pioneer wireless speaker XW SMA3 and an airport express.

Et voila... My Ipad is back to normal. fast... no very fast internet connection and stable as ****. Just like iOS 7 was.

Working with it for a couple of hours now without any trouble at all.

But do i connect one Airplay device to the network the wifi is not stable anymore and extremely slow again on my ipad air.

My Macbook running mac os x mavericks doesn't have these issues, neither does my iphone 5S. and they are also on the same 5ghz network.

So I can create and recreate the issue and create a work around... Apple please come with a solution that makes me able to use airplay an ipad (on ios8) on a 5ghz network! like in iOS 7!!!!

Using 2 IPad 2's. One running iOS 7 and one on IOS 8.0.0. I have reinstalled IOS 7 twice and then gone back to 8 on one of the IPads. The update on ITunes worked better than the ICloud. I have turned off the ICloud on the IPad using IOS 8 and followed the directions suggested for turning off Wifi sharing. Both IPads seem to be working OK but the unit with 7 works faster and the battery lasts longer. I do not like the changes to Safari and it seems to contribute to the increased battery usage on the iPad with IOS 8. Apple should stop assuming we all want the same capability ie sharing, music and apps. I don't need tips icon or padcast icon. I would like to have the best operating software but be able to select everything else.

Jack, In my environment, I don't use an AC router, although I install them at many of my clients. I use an Verizon (Actiontec) or Apple Airport Express which only support at best 802.11n and the Apple Express is dual-band, but not MIMO. I do agree that your assumption of a "multiple stream (MIMO)" bug in iOS 8 code may be correct. In one way I would agree that the reason I don't have the problem with speed is that I'm not connecting to a MIMO or 802.11AC device, but on the other hand, people are having issues with older iPads/iPhones that don't support either. I will have to break down and either get a Netgear R series or Apple Airport Extreme and do some further testing.

Thanks for confirming that Philip. I had the impression that things had got better after installing 8.0.2, but that was probably just the fact that the network connection got reset with the update. After some hours the intermittent connection has returned.

The one thing that remains consistent, and I am sure is related, is that my devices are seen intermittently on iTunes on my Mac. Among three iPads and one iPhone, I have yet to see a pattern as to which might show up on iTunes, but it is never all of them as had been the case with 7.1.2. And, if they are not visible on iTunes, iTunes Sync from the device does not work.

I wish that Apple would, at least, confirm that they have a problem, even if it is only with a minority of users, and tell us that they are working on a solution. The fact that this problem does not appear with all users, but does seem to appear with all brands of Wifi routers (inlcuding Apples) might suggest that some chipsets in the routers are incompatible with a change in iOS 8.

I to have installed IOS8.02 on my IPad mini retina to no avail........the spinning wheel spins relentlessly even when connected to router I have done everything Apple have advised re-installing by using I Tunes via a pc with an ethernet connection this is a software based problem Apple need to continue to sort this out

thank god I have Microsoft products as a reliable back up although they have had issues they can always be back stepped to allow users to keep working

Yes I have the same problem wifi freezing problem, it first manifested itself after loading the developer version on my iPad Air. I can surf quite happily although sluggish then the wifi just freezes. I have to switch airplane mode on and off to get it all to work.

current have ios 8.02 loaded but still have the same issues....streaming from YouTube or a TV channel is appalling

my other iPad air with ios7 works fine......thanks again Apple for another monumental cockup.

lets get this sorted

Received my new iPhone 6 yesterday and downloaded the iOS 8.02 on it as well as two ipad 4's and a iPhone 5. Since downloading the 8.02 fix everything is working as it should. I've not ever had the connectivity issues, mostly Safari stalling out but even that appears to be working as it should. Could I possibly be that lucky, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I have friends in Texas that have not had any of the issues either. What's up with that? Some have horrible problems and yet others very few if any - so odd! I'm loving my new gold iphone 6 and thankful after two days, it's still working fine.

Asus RT-N66U router 2.4 and 5GHz, everything worked fine with iPhone 5s and iPad Air before iOS 8, now 8.02

Wi-Fi is intermittent, AirPlay to Apple TV not working properly either, slow, not connecting.

Apple TV is on EtherNet.

Don't think it's isolated to iPad Air but not 100% sure.

Reset Apple TV a couple times, unplugged power cord.

Power cycled cable modem and router a couple times, internet is just fine on my wired computers.
Restored iPAD but that didn't help either.

Reset Network settings a couple times on iPad, no cure.

Not happy with Apple, that's crazy how much times it takes to troubleshoot.

Hoping something will be released by Apple addressing the issue

iOS 8.0.2 no change in wifi for me on my iPad Air

since iOS 8 5 GHz wifi useless - join network, works for awhile, the have to disconnect and reconnect, the good for a while, then repeat, repeat, repeat ....

2.4 GHz band works ok for my iPad air.

5 GHz works just fine for all my other devices - iphone 6, MBP, ipad 4th gen, iMac

Apple, Please fix!

If you had followed the thread since day one, you would know that it has all been tried. It only gives temporary relief as all iDevices with iOS 8 or 8.0.2 seem to reset the connection after a few minutes and lose the connection. It does come back after a few more minutes, but it is unacceptable. We are wasting our time with useless fixes. Apple has to fix this. Write to TC.

The only reason changing DNS appears to work is that it is like resetting network settings. It works for a while then the network connection resets and you lose the connection for a while. It will come back after a while. It is not worth playing with as this is a problem only Apple can solve. 8.0.2 does not help.

There is no fix, temporary or otherwise. Write to Apple Support or TC directly to get them moving. Not sure if they monitor these Fora.

I did a fresh install of 8.0.2 in my Air and I am still having problems with the WiFi. It was decent for about 24 hours or so and then went back to spotty connections. Download speeds go from 50Mbps down to .5 Mbps intermittently and sometimes drops the connection altogether. I have been leaving feedback to Apple almost every day to try and help get some kind of ball rolling, but, of course, no response. iPad 3 running 7.2.1 works flawlessly on the same network, no connection drops or speed drops for that matter. I primarily use my iPad Air for streaming and catching up on shows and games I miss and it's been a nightmare.

THis is continuing to drive me crazy. Whilst my wifi doesn't drop it is much slower. At 5-10 mbiSt according to speed test app. under ios 7 it was 35. If I reboot phone it tends to regain its speed but will later drop off. Often if I go work and come home back into my wifi it picks up but is slow until I reboot. As if ios 8 gets confused moving in and out of cellular to wifi. I have AirPlay devices too which are slow to pick up such as apple tv. iOS 8 is the pits. Sadly early beta posts re 8.1 mention nothing about forthcoming wifi fixes. Apple really have bodged this and their arrogance just leaves me dumbfounded.

Switched back to 2.4GHz band on my iPad Air.
Reason: On 5GHz even with channel manually set to 161 the Youtube Videos on my iPad Air would go blurry (auto switch to lower resolution while playing) and also interrupt while playing. No such a thing on 2.4GHz band.
On the 2.4Ghz YouTube videos open immediately without hesitation.

For me at least I'll keep my iPad on the 2.4GHz band.
I like it actually, gives much better coverage...hoping there will be a fix eventually for the 5GHz band....
