Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Ever since upgrading to IOS 8, including IOS 8.01, 8.02 and 8.1 I had the wellknown Wifi issue.

wifi speeds dropping from 120mbps to about 2mbps @ 5ghz in within a minute after connecting to the wifinetwork. often i couldn't even surf at all. but the wifi signal was always strong.

With every update i was hoping for a solution from Apple but it never came.

Tried everything that can be found on the internet.

    Resetting the network settings.

Disabling "wifi networking" under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services.

    Reinstalling my Ipad from scratch

Used different routers and different setups.

Automatic ip's and fixed ip's and different dns servers just to be sure.

Nothing worked. The only workaround is switching to a 2.4Ghz network.

So i was doing some tests and found THE solution, but i don't like it all.

One of the biggest changes in IOS 8 is the ability to use airplay without a network. by using a wifi connection in combination with bluetooth.

    And here lies the problem.

I disconnected al my Airplaydevices from my network. Denon AV-amplifier AVR2113, Pioneer wireless speaker XW SMA3 and an airport express.

Et voila... My Ipad is back to normal. fast... no very fast internet connection and stable as ****. Just like iOS 7 was.

Working with it for a couple of hours now without any trouble at all.

But do i connect one Airplay device to the network the wifi is not stable anymore and extremely slow again on my ipad air.

My Macbook running mac os x mavericks doesn't have these issues, neither does my iphone 5S. and they are also on the same 5ghz network.

So I can create and recreate the issue and create a work around... Apple please come with a solution that makes me able to use airplay an ipad (on ios8) on a 5ghz network! like in iOS 7!!!!

Have any of you contacted Apple about your issues (especially those who have done some debugging work?)

We're just fellow users here, and Apple's engineers don't follow these discussions for problem reports.

Either contact AppleCare, or file a bug here:  http://bugreport.apple.com

It's certainly not a universal issue, as many have had no issues at all, and if you walk into an Apple Store every iPhone and iPad is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi and they don't drop out, so there's something unique going on here.

I hope it works out for you,  but this is not the root cause. I don't have any Airplay devices connected to anything. And this Wi-Fi problem happens with every access point no matter where I try connecting. It happens with iPhones and iPads. It's the worst trying get to connect to an Enterprise security access point at work.

i am also amazingly underwhelmed by the quality control of the iOS output in the past few years.  i have no idea why a company so concerned with a well-cultivated end-user experience would put out a product that is so poorly tested.  especially, sporting bugs that get in the way of a person and accessing the internet through wifi --- the NUMBER 1 reason most of pick up our iOS device.  after touting the excellent memory management and consistently-smooth interaction of apple devices, this bug and the recent low bar for iOS releases is almost enough for me to move to an android device.

that being said, i, like leroybrussee, have tried every fix on the internet to no avail.  upon turning the airplay on my apple tv off, however, my wifi problems seem to have been rectified so far.  this seems to have been a main source (although may not be the sole source) of wifi disruption for my device (iPhone 5S).

I had Wi-Fi performance problems, but just downloaded ios8.1 and so far so good.  The release notes indicate that it does "resolves issues with Wi-Fi performance that could occur when connected to some base stations", video playback issues, etc, so we'll see.

Also, it appears that there are quite a few Android zombies trolling this thread and trashing Apple, the 8.1 update, etc... Those trolls who have just recently gotten AppleID's are pretty obvious, but there are others that may have owned Apple devices in the past, converted to Android and just want to justify their decision.

In other words, be wary of Level 1 contributors... Yes, I know I'm Level 1, but I do own Apple devices, including an iPhone 6, but rarely contribute... because I rarely have problems/complaints.

Well there you go...you just said it.  You don't post if you don't have problems. I don't doubt there may be Android fan boys fanning the flames, but I don't think you can say those with Lev 1 are suspect.  Most people don't have the need to post if things are working correctly.

Dear Mr. Woo, I'm just trying to make sure people understand that there are trolls on these threads specifically here to spew negativety... 8.1 has seemed to resolve most people's issues, including mine, but if you're still having problems, then you should probaly seek out your nearest Applecare specialist, rather than ***** and moan on this thread.  Just a thought.

Mr Stanky here's another thought along those lines. If your problems are fixed, maybe you should unsubscribe from this thread where people are discussing and venting about their legitimate and continuing problems.  While I already agreed there could be fake complainers, what do you hope to achieve by presenting warnings about it here?  Who are you warning?

TThe references to AirPlay is interesting. I might disable mine too and test as I have apple tv 2nd gen and airport express which simply joins my wifi network purely to turn our hifi into a AirPlay device. I bet AirPlay is too blame in a few cases. My 5s never actually drops wifi but it's often very slow to show AirPlay in control centre with some funny glitches that are hard to describe. Often it may display one AirPlay device whilst the other takes ages to even show if at all. All the while speedtest.net throughput often collapses to sub 5 mbits when it should be 35. Sometimes it recovers, sometimes it takes a reboot to get it firing ok again. All the while my iPad 2nd gen running iOS 8 seems largely unaffected. I tried all the fixes like unchecking wifi networking in location services, static ip for phone, changing wifi channels, router reboots. Nothing helps. The phone does this glitching under both 2.4 and 5 ghz bands but 5 ghz seems a little more sturdy. Still garbage as 5 ghz range isn't anywhere as good. I cannot believe apples arrogance and that their own hardware seems to be causing grief. I don't like Microsoft much but at least all other devices just work fine. I mean MS has to contend with so many multiple hardware configs and software yet apple controls their hardware and their software tighter yet it still doesn't work right. I despise ios 8, it's caused too much stress!

iOS 8.1 solved my problems with my iPad Air and Timecapsule. Was a nighttmare but now after 2 days with no problems I'm more comfortable

I hope the update has fixed it for you antoniofrommerano, but personally I would say don't get your hopes up too soon, I updated to 8.1 as well as soon as it came out, with hopes it would fix the issues, and to be fair at first it did seem to me to be a bit better, however after a very short time I noticed the issues creeping back in and found it was still not working, my wifi still keeps dropping connection completely on 2.4ghz, and 5ghz has a very small range you need to be within feet to get a decent connection, so basically its not fixed anything at all in my view.

I'm really hoping they are still working on this problem as its the most frustrating thing I've had to deal with, and still find it very frustrating that they don't just release a statement saying they are working on it, just to put everyones mind at ease, rather than this wall of silence, I know from the guy I spoke to from apple who set up a piece of logging software on my phone, that they DO monitor these forums for trends to identify potential issues, what they don't seem to do is be able to give any responses on them, maybe its company policy not to publicly respond?

Going to try turning off the airplay on my AppleTV which is currently about the only thing I haven't tried, either way as my wife's iPhone still on ios7 and my Macbook are both totally fine on my wifi, the issue is absolutely a software problem introduced with ios8, don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise.

I Got that profile too but am so hesitant to click it as at the moment i would rather handle a grenade than anything apple gives me such is my lack of faith. How does it install? Is it an app? Does it take much space and is it easy to uninstall/remove it?

I do not think it takes up much space? It is just like any Wi-Fi profile like the cloud for O2 or any other network profile you can remove it whenever you want to
