Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I have been monitoring this thread since my wifi issues started with the first iOS 8 update. Basically, Ive had no wifi or shoddy wifi or grayed out wifi and bluetooth since updating to 8.0 all the way through 8.1. Hours of my enjoyable life were burnt backing up, restoring, testing, and researching the issue.

Here is my resolution. I made an appt with an apple genius. Luckily, I was still under 1 year of purchase and was able to get my iphone 5s replaced immediately without any cost. His explanation was...sometimes a major release will exacerbate an already existing problem such as broken/worn down wifi/bluetooth chip.

Well that sounded great but I would have loved to be able to downgrade to iOS 7.xx to find out if that were true. Apple definitely rubbed me the wrong way with this experience. I will be selling my new 5s for a nexus 6 so i dont have to deal with iTunes and not being able to downgrade my iOS.

    Good luck!

    Google can be easily neutered:

    1. Don't use the Internet while signed-in to your Google account.

    2. Use Startpage.com or DuckDuckGo and Google will not be able to log all of your Internet searches and tie them to your IP address.  I prefer Startpage because it actually uses Google but it masks your IP address. (Install the free GLIMS Safari add-on and you can make Startpage, DuckDuckGo or another search engine he default in Safari.)

    3. Subscribe to a personal VPN service. One of the benefits is that your IP address is replaced with the IP address of whichever VPN server is used. Reputable personal VPN companies do not maintain logs that tie subscribers to their IP addresses.

I have used Witopia's personal VPN for five years. When I have checked using Witopia's server is often faster than Charter's servers. I have my Mac configured to automatically log-in to the Witopia VPN when the computer boots-up every morning. Witopia has no data transfer limits nor does it throttle your data transfer speed when you reach a predetermined limit. The cost to use VPN on my Macs and iOS devices is less than $6/month. Its basic service (which is fine for most people...) costs around $4/month. (Some plans are available with six-month and monthly subscriptions. There is a 30-day cancellation period with a money back guarantee.)

w what this experience has taught me is:

never just just blindly click yes to an update before not only thoroughly reading what it includes (in this case nothing in the update was actually useful to how I use my iPad and changed the way several apps look and work.  Changes I would not personally have made.).

apple seriously need to include a wind back feature in their iOS system.  It is all well and good saying you need the latest for "security" but each update adds more than just security it adds designer chosen mods to the standard settings, making technophobes lost for days a fire each update.  There is no need to reinvent the wheel and if you must, add options to keep preferred older settings.  I hate the new safari, had I a choice I never would have made the changes made.

Read as many customer reviews as possible before pressing accept.  While it has been correctly stated some comments here are trolls and agents for the competition, the overwhelming majority are real people experiencing genuine problems regarding an actual common issue.  Forewarned is forearmed.

Have a backup.  Relying on one device is why a lot of people are really angry, they have access for work by a machine they didn't choose and now it isn't working.  Had they had an alternative they might not have been so frustrated.  In my case I have an acer laptop to fall back on when the iPad fails.  Expensive and not always an option, but worth considering for the future....

Experts don't know everything.  My experience of Apple tech support was disappointingly un informative. They seem to have a less is more approach to resolutions as in they tell you virtually nothing and take no responsibility. It is always the third party hardware or the app that caused the problem...  Well in this case it clearly wasn't.

Just got my iPad Air 2 and unfortunately the Wi-Fi Issues on my 5GHz network continue exactly the same as my IPhone 6 Plus and 5S. iOS 8.1 didn't fix anything!

I May have a solution.... So you have to go to the settings, tap on general,  scroll down to date & time, tap on it, and tap on set automatically. This worked for my iPad air which had the same problem. Hope this helped.

We have an iPad 3, iPhone4, 4S and 5 at home and I've Updated the iPad to iOS 8.0.2 and boom I've got the problem with loosing the Wifi connection 2 meters away from my wifi router. I had never had any problems with that for over 2 years with that iPad.

I hoped that iOS 8.1 will fix that and i upgraded the iPad on 21st October, but nothing got better.

I think Apple has a big problem there in their software quality department, that is a thing that should not happen when you only have that few hardware devices where the OS is running on !

    APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS !

On Windows 7, the install logs are here:

    C:\Users\Roger\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Updater Logs

For "Roger", you should substitute your own name, of course. I suspect that it is much like this for Windows 8.1 as well *smile*. For an iPad, it's just "iPad Updater Logs" in the last path element, as I recall.

This could be wishful thinking on your part, don't hold your breath!

I was in the the Apple Store in Marbella today & they told me that they weren't aware of problems. Hahahahaha

Had a weird WiFi funkiness on my iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1 last night. Couldn't get to App Store or Network Speed Test, but Safari worked a little. Tried everything I could think of to fix it:

    - Power-cycled wireless router.

    - Disconnected from wireless and reconnected to remake network profile.

    - Turned both WiFi and Airplane mode on and off.

    - Power-cycled iPhone.

    - Reset network settings.

Finally, tried a full restore install via iTunes, which I couldn't start since "find my phone" was on. Couldn't turn "find my phone" off until turned off WiFi. Luckily cellular data was still working, so could turn off "find my phone" that way. Did restore install of 8.1, then after that restored apps and settings from a working backup. All good now. Don't like having to waste all that time, but glad that WiFi is working again.

I realize that people are having a lot more frustrating stuff going on with WiFi than this if they're buying different phones, but I thought that I'd throw this one out there in case it helped anyone.

Well, looks like Apple used the same wifi drivers for Yosemite, and Macbooks are now crippled too.

Maybe this will force them into recognizing that there is a problem and DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

I have an iPhone 6, and although 8.1 did seem to somewhat resolve the Wi-Fi problem... excruciating slowness, disconnects, asking for passwords, etc... my Wi-Fi is still slower and more unstable than LTE, which just ain't right.  Apple is usually pretty good at providing updates for this type of thing, and I thought 8.1 would be the cure, but it  wasn't quite the answer.  Apple, you need to make this issue a top priority and resolve it ASAP!

I have played it for a day and even do comparison to my gold iphone 6. Sometimes my gold iphone's connection stalled while the new one is zippy. Is it a hardware fault??

You never know, but I'm guessing that after awhile it will exhibit the same problem(s). If it doesn't, let us know... h/w can't be completely ruled out, but I would very surprised if they would have made a h/w change this soon, or that they would have more than 1 h/w config available at this point.

I have a ping monitor on my Desktop computer, when I connect my Iphone 6 to the wireless, internet ping goes to ****!!!, The fault is the Iphone, I just got my Iphone 6 replaced due to me cracking the screen. Replacement phone has the same issues, so there must be some hardware or software bug, Its not your routers fault. There is definately something wrong with the phone.

I connected my phone to my Billion Modem 2ghz and 5ghz, also 2ghz Ubiquiti Unif Access point which has a 400MHZ processor. Ping going to **** keeps on happening.  My house made asks me to turn off my wireless on the phone, so he can play games.  My leeching on the net doesnt effect this gaming much. its the iphone just being connected to the wireless
