Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Same issues with my iPad 4 - keep getting the message "Safari has lost connection".  Unable to print to my eprinter from apps and worse yet, when I tried to log into Apple Support I received a message that I needed the current version of Safarai - WHAT?  I am sorely regretting this upgrade to iOS 8.  Steve Jobs must be turning over in his grave.  I have been an Apple fan for years but the love is fading fast!  Now I'm giving serious thought to canceling my iphone 6 order.

Haha yes I'm a girl!  I don't know the relation between location services & WIFI, maybe someone else can answer that?

In regards to a DNS change I've only ever used Google's.

Open DNS works as well.  Not as fast though.

RE:  Google Spy -  If you're worried about spying then don't go on the internet at all. Privacy died a long, long time ago.  I do believe the NSA makes that perfectly clear. No way around it.

I was having the same issues on two iPad Airs, an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 5s.  What I found was that the Settings --> Personal Hotspot was enabled by default and by turning it off on all of the devices, everything returned to normal.  You might need to power off and back on the devices after turning off the Personal Hotspot.

Re: Google spy.   I am not worried about the NSA.  Google has the biggest database on the most people of any organisation in the world.  That concentration of information can only be dangerous.  But, they can be largely avoided.  I avoid their apps and services and block their scripts on web pages.  Google Analytics has become an epidemic.

It is not the data getting out that is the worry.  It is the concentration of data in one place that is the precursor of all that is bad in science fiction, and soon to be reality.

I have exactly the same issue with our iphone 5, iphone 5c and both our Ipad Air's. They seem to work perfectly when using 3G signal or when the ipads are tethered or using a mobile dongle.

Since you are so brilliant at finding solutions, am I the only one who has noticed that iTunes on my Mac no longer sees my iPad Mini and iPad Air since iOS 8?  iTunes Sync no longer works.  I do not have this problem with my iPhone 5.

Same problem here. Have an iPad Air 64Gb and an iPhone 5S 64Gb and they both have the same issue with WiFi connection after upgrading to iOS 8. Using AirPort Extreme.

Both had no  issues when running iOS 7.

Feel like throwing it out the window.

Re: Google Spy: I stay away from Analytics for sure.   Its already a reality, I believe but of course its getting worse and worse.  Facebook is a major plague. Wouldn't dare catch me on that site.

Anyway back to the topic.  My WiFi is going strong on both iPad 2 and iPad Mini and its been over an hour.  No lags at all.   As stated previously, changing my DNS setting to Google DNS:   8.8.8.8 worked as does Open DNS settings: http://www.opendns.com/

Not sure if this will help anyone but in my experience I've been seeing the Wifi connections acting weird and this could contribute to speed issues that others have brought up.  I've got iOS 8 on both my iPad mini Retina and iPhone 5S.  I have not seen any issues occur on my iPad but I've used it less since upgrading to iOS 8.

On my iPhone when I encounter slowdown issues about 50% of the time I see that my Wifi settings are not correct.  What would originally be a 192.168.xxx.x IP address will get changed to what I believe is the iPhone default and my subnet mask changes to 255.255.0.0.  Along with those changes I loose my router information and DNS addresses (DNS changes to some funky number).

Device Info: iPhone 5s on ATT

    Wireless Router: Cisco E4200 Dualband

Things I've tried to resolve the issue:

    • Dropping and joining network
    • Renewing Network Lease
    • Restarting Phone
    • Nothing

    Things I've yet to try:

    • Cycle Router and Cable Modem
    • Restoring Phone

I'll snap a couple screen shots next time it occurs and update my post with them.  In my opinion I think the issue is an os glitch in how the network communications is handled but I'm not an expert by any means.
