Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

pp91, I'm no expert, but what I know is that pre ios8 I never saw numbers deterate like this, even after several runs in a row.

I presume most people that run speedtests, do it more than once to verify that the result is consistent. But then again I could be wrong and its just me.

As I said, I never had this issue before, unfortunally I do not have any of my devices left with ios7.

My suggestion to you is to do the same test as you did now on your mothers ipad, and see the difference.

Hopefully you will not see any deteration in speed when you du several tests in a row.

If this proves to be the case, I would absolutly recommend you to do screendumps and ask Apple to explain why, because then it is definitly not your router that is the cause of the problem.

The only differens will be ios7.X vs ios 8.X

I agree Angry Birds is not THE problem but it is a clue.

If there is a memory leak this should provide clues to Apple as to one of the conflicts.

Read the notes above at least 3 people have resolved the issue by simply shutting down Angry Birds.

    Ok I'm done!

Been there, done that. None of these Apple supported suggestions work. Same issues are occurring.

One more from Spain. From iOS 8 I can't use my iPad normally. Reproductions of live content have been frozen. A 20-minute video is loaded for an hour and always just stopping.
I have a iPad Air and iPhone 6, both with iOS 8.1 and the wifi problem.
My roommate has a iPad mini with iOS 7 and has no problem.

I tried to turn it off, reset network, reset factory ... NOTHING.
I paid good money for my devices for a supposed quality.

What happened to you, Apple? You used to be cool.

Today Apple has released iOS 8.1.1 beta 1 to developers.  We can only hope that whenever it is released to the public it will solve the problems we have all been having.

I have an iPhone 5S...Updated to IOS 8.1 and now have to completely power down the phone sometimes to use my wifi. This wifi is working just fine with my MacBook Pro Retina with Yosemite. It's the phone. Before I moved to 8.1, I had the 8.01 and .02 and had no problem with either. Looks like marketing got in the way of engineering...again. Welcome to the Microsoft way of doing things. This also forces me to put off buying the iPhone 6 until such time as Apple fixes this problem.

It's really weird that ios 8.1 fixed my iphone 6's wifi issue but didn't fix my retina mini.

Apple has really messed up! After supporting apple products from the beginning of the MAC computer and always completing upgrades without reading the release documents and knowing that the upgrades will always make things better, I made my upgrade to IOS8 on my IPAD 3.  That was a big mistake! My fully functioning IPAD is now a pile of crap!  There is nothing good about the upgrade. My wife prevented my from crushing if with a sledge hammer and took if from me. I don't really miss it because nothing really worked anyway like it did before.

I am not particularly knowledgable in regards to iOS software and apple hardware but can anyone make sense of how an update such as ios8 can cause issues for a small minority of people but not affect millions of other people?? Is it possible that a software update can actually damage hardware?? I read a post many pages ago where somebody said they got a replacement after taking it to a 'genius' and they concluded the hardware may have got damaged with the update....my case has dragged on with Apple and Im looking for good arguments for my case with some technical relevance because they are taking the p*ss with me and I feel like they don't believe me yet they pretty much ignore or sidestep me when I tell them to come pick my iPad up and look at it themselves. Has anyone else managed to get a replacement regarding wifi issues?

I got a replacement on Sunday of my iPad Air 2 (was only a week old) and it did NOT fix the WiFi issue. The issue is with iOS 8.1 and that is the software that comes with this particular iPad.

I have an iPad 3; after upgrading to iOS 8.1 I experienced wifi connection constantly dropping. Any suggestions I read did not help (location services, reset networking etc). After reading about Angry Birds and Game Center, I logged out of Game Center in the few games I play (not Angry Birds btw). Since then (3 days ago) wifi has worked fine. It's not ideal (having to click away the Game Center login popup when I want to play a game) but at least I have a working iPad again.

All of these so called solutions are nothing but BS.  I bought a NEW wireless router.  Turned off 5GHz band and renamed the 2.4GHz band.  Joined the new router with my phone and still crappy wifi.  I have restored my phone to factory settings - something that was beyond a huge PITA.  I still haven't loaded 90% of my apps back because I can't get a good wifi connection and they won't load without it.  My phone is practically useless now and Apple still does nothing.  I am glad to see so many more people posting here every day.  Means I am not alone and that maybe something will get done.

there is definetely something in this control centre causing wifi issues (and even maybe presence of AirPlay icon). I am luckier than most in that across ios 8 through 8.1 my wifi had always connected and rarely drops on my 5s but I have been plagued by sporadic speedtest throughput drops and slow to pick up AirPlay too. But most noticeable to me is trying to use my favourite 'my cloud' app by WD. I use it to access my NAS inside and outside my network all the time. On cellular/4g it's always fast but in my home network trying to navigate folders often results in waiting times of several seconds for it to load. Very frustrating when it used to be instant on ios 7. Strangely if I swipe up control centre and down again then I get instant responses from the app. Later it will slow again and the same trick works again, it's a bizarre anomaly that I hate. But this is only on the 5s as my iPad third gen exhibits no such anomaly on same app. I get speedtest slowdowns and sluggish safari response a lot too which can recover just as quick as it slowed but I haven't spotted a pattern yet, but there seems to be something in control centre that is perhaps causing the inconsistent performance. Anyway just thought I'd chime in. Like all of you I think apple is a heap of garbage these days. Ios 8 is a disaster. Aside from the wifi (which is the lifeblood of the phones usefulness along with cellular) there are so so so many bugs. I've never seen an os as bad. I thought windows 8 was a shocker but ios 8 takes the biscuit

I totally agree. I have tried all the fixes and changes. On my 5S after I updated it was ruined on my iPad after is updated it was ruined I was not going to update any more with the iPhone 6 I had no choice. It was already on iOS 8 which is now ruined. I wish they wouldjust acknowledge there is a problem TeleSales trying to fix it so that we would not have to keep thinking are they can forget about last night they did with 8.1just using the forums on an iOS device is a nightmare I have to use Siri to dictate as typing does not work properly
