Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I'll be wiping both our iPads and installing as new as soon as they come out.  No use at the moment, we have simply give up on on them as they are crap.

If 8.1.1 doesn't work, well,  in the skip they go and out for an alternative product.

Resetting Network Setting actually worked for me.  I'm pretty surprised, considering basically nothing else on iOS 8 works.

Well I had a phone call this afternoon from another nice person at Apple, wanting me to send them my phone to test hardware, but as I don't have a spare this is not an option for me, a very nice lady I spoke to, but worried me as when I enquired about the impending 8.1.1 coming out which would hopefully fix it, she didn't give me the impression its a fix, more like they are wanting to check hardware?

Anyway 8.1.1 has been released so downloading now and praying its got a fix for my iphone 5S with broken wifi, if it doesn't fix it.......well I don't want to think of that as an option.

Lets just hope the wifi issue has been found and sorted with this update. Crossing everything!

It has worked well for me without issues. Just update it.

It won't be worse than 8.1

I got the same problem on my iphone 5 after updgrading to ios 8, but I found the solution. Go to the setting ▶️ wifi, then against the network you are used to use press i on the right hand side then select FORGET THIS NETWORK, then reselect the same wifi you are used to use and enter the password if needed.

I am experiencing the same issues. Add to that the typing bugs where the screen randomly freezes or will not allow delete & typing new search....it all becomes VERY FRUSTRATING. I note that Apple have changed the process for online booking of Genius Bar appointments, where it takes longer only to end up with "Sorry, the page you requested was not found. Please try again in a few minutes or start over now..."

WIsh I had not updated to latest iOS8....iPad was working like a dream prior to that update, but now I'm ready to walk away from all Apple products. This disenchantment mainly due to Apple Support becoming extinct like the Dinosaurs.

I have 3 iPads one was updated and showed the issues and I rolled back before they stopped signing ios7 and never updated.

8.1.1 update is showing available but I can't update until I can get connected to iTunes.

Anxious to hear from anyone who has updated to 8.1.1 as to how this latest update works, especially regarding the WiFi issues.

Well its early days yet to tell for sure and I don't want to tempt fate, but so far for me it seems way faster now on 8.1.1

I haven't yet had chance to see how the 5ghz is distance wise, or how stable the wifi is, and I haven't reset any settings, just updated, well I mean it couldn't have made things much worse than they were anyway.

Most noticeable is the games, now I get the notification of Game Center connection each time I load a game, which had stopped on most games post iOS8, makes me wonder if theres a link?

Games are also now way more responsive and seem as they were on iOS7 so far.

I will see if the wifi remains stable and has the range issues later, but thought I'd post to let you guys know, for me at least so far it seems to be a big improvement.

    I Just updated to ios8.1.1.

NOthing has changed.  You reboot and the wifi reports that the correct password is incorrect, over and over until you either go into the wifi router settings and remove the apple devices from the queue or reboot the router as well.  Pathetic.

I Choose apple in the first place because they had a reputation for being secure and reliable, but my experience on this issue has been the exact opposite.  For nearly three months now my wifi access has been spotty or i just get locked out completely.  My acer laptop doesn't have this issue, neither does my hp ltop, just my two ipad minis.

I Will not waste money on any more apple products.  Complete crap.

8.1.1 installed and still no fix on my iPhone 5.

Also had a couple of calls with an apple tech in the US and did the whole wifi profile thing for them last week. No joy still!!

I know exactly what you mean there is no difference whatsoever. I was curious when I read the release notes for 8.11 when it said to help for S and iPad 2 what about the new versions of the Apple devices

What I find the most frustrating in all this is that THIS is an official Apple forum, but most of the users here are reporting Apple are not monitoring this discussion.  Add to which several users have reported similar issues to the help desk only to be advised to replace their hardware, or to record details of the device experiencing the fault in order for them to work out what the fault actually is - because as far as they are officially allowed to tell us "there is no fault with ios8".

It really makes me question the logic of buying Apple products in the first place.

I have an ipad I can never switch off for fear of it permanently loosing access to my wifi router.  That cannot be a normal feature?!

Will someone please tell me WHY my Ipad is reporting I'm keying the WRONG password when I am most definitely not, and why my strong wifi signal is sometimes undetectable by my ipad mini, when every other wifi compatible device in the house has no issues, non what so ever, in finding a signal.

Yes I know when multiple devices are accessing the same source together it can max out your bandwidth, I'm always very careful not to use them simultaneously, but as a test I have switched two or three on at the same time to see if they can detect the router and only the Ipads have any problems.

Same with the password issues.  Only the Apple devices seem to think the right password is incorrect.  And this has only been happening (again) since ios8.

(to clarify, when I first got my ipad last year I had issues logging in then too, but it seemed to be resolved with ios7, since the most recent updates this is no longer the case).

And before anyone suggest it, there are no firmware updates for my model of router available.
