Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

THis sums it up precisely, stevehc52.  That was what I experienced and how I would sum it up.  I couldn't wait for a fix....I took a gamble and bought a new router, cofigured it as a WAP and the problem has almost completely disappeared. It IS a wireless N router (Asus RT-N53 for 50 bucks).  I'm getting very fast speed test numbers too.

My problem access point was a Linksys WAP54G. If Apple wants it to debug, you're welcome to it.  Should I have had to buy new network equipment to use any Apple products on ios8?  Absolutely not. But I had to, or end up smashing my iPad air, iphone 6 and iPhone 5s in frustration.

    Dan woo,

i am using an Asia n66u and am experiencing the issues. The only anomaly in it is that the 5 connects to 5ghz N but refuses to connect to 2.4ghz N 'incorrect password error'. I have re flashed router, tried every combination of settings I can without going mad. Tried asus stock, merlin firmware. No difference

I Currently own a 3GS, 4, 5 and 6 iphone. The two older models are only used in the house as iPods now but the 5 and 6 are used as mobile devices. I recently updated both to iOS 8.1. Immediately I was faced with problems - the 5 will only connect to 5ghz wifi (although it drops frequently) but when connecting to 2.4ghz all I get is 'incorrect password' which I know is not the case. The 6 also has connectivity problems, dropping frequently. I have now updated to 8.1.1 - this has made no difference. Apple support absolutely useless. Would not admit there is an issue yet thousands of people are reporting this. These devices are needed for business and due to Apple not allowing rollback of software are now 'Not fit for purpose'. Having been a loyal Apple customer for years I am utterly disgusted at the now lack of testing that clearly goes on. They seem to be be so focused on adding features and getting new additions out before their counterparts that they are losing their way. Reliability and stability was one of the major growth factors for Apple which they now seem to have lost. I'm sorry but it is not acceptable for a £500 device to have its wifi broken due to a software update that is required to run new apps etc etc.  Apple seriously need to sort this out as I will not be the only customer they will be losing.  The no rollback policy may restrict piracy but will overall lose Apple customers when faults like this occur.  I will be returning my iphone 5 device to a retail store within the next few days, although out of Apples warranty it is covered under the sale of goods act and also an EU directive to which a full refund is applicable if a fault with the product occurs not caused by misuse. As the device is older than six months it is down to the consumer to prove that the device is faulty, going by the thousands of posts all over the Internet regarding these issues here is your proof Apple.

rant over. Just hope people read this and know their rights to a refund due to the faults. I would be happy to hear any 'constructive' feedback you have Apple, you have my email address, but I won't hold my breath to anything more than 'we havnt got problems' or 'you need to upgrade your hardware here's a small discount'.

****, really?  This is the weirdest issue.  There's nothing consistent about anything other than the symptoms.  My network has a router/firewall, an Asus N56U in the basement.  This has wifi as well and I didn't have severe problems when connecting with ios8. But because it's in the basement, I have weak signal in the rest of the house.  So I had the Linksys access pt on the first floor on Ethernet connection to the router.  The wifi problem was severe with the Linksys.  I'd get the wifi freeze every few minutes. Now I have a bunch of SSIDs all being served up by Asus equipment on 5ghz and 2.4 ghz and I have almost no problems with any of them.  Occasionally I notice a little wifi weirdness...like once every couple days or so.  But it's drastically better.

This is going to be a tough fix...

On a 5s. Wifi on 8.0 and 8.1 was unusable at home (e4200v2 router), but worked fine at the office. 8.1.1 is slightly better at home and still fine at the office.

I have noticed that Bluetooth on/off has a huge impact - over 10 Mbps - at home and a small but noticeable difference at work. This is different from 8 and 8.1 where Bluetooth setting made no difference for me.

Note at home everything was fine prior to 8. Android devices unaffected at home.

    Differences from home to work:

    - home has many neighbouring wifi networks, work none

    - work has very strong lte signal and home weak - this should not matter

    - different router at work

    Another Update:

First time this has happened - iPhone 6 - came into office this morning and it decides to give me an incorrect password error, first time this has happened on the 6.  It seems to be a distance related issue - if i stand right next to the router (and i mean right next to) i do not get the incorrect password issue.  This includes the iPhone 5.  Get 2m away in a clear line of sight and it reoccurs.

Again this is with an ASUS RT-N66U router (they are so reliable that I have replaced mine, my business and my families routers with them)  The wifi works with all other devices - some as far as 20m away through brick walls, and the issues have not happened previously.

I Am very disappointed with apple. I have an iphone 4s and since i upgraded it to IOS 8 in order to get some benefitis, I did not connect to wi fi network anymore. I tried many different tips which I found on internet, but nothing solve the problem. If it was possible, I would like to downgrade my iphone 4s to an old version of IOS, because it seems that this version was not tested as it was supposed to be.

I tried to change my router channels and configurations, tried static address instead of DHCP and everything else. All other devices that I have are working perfectly but Iphone 4s using ios 8.

I have doubts to upgrade my idevices one day, and have the same problems in future. Is it that hard to code some network management as it was on ios 6?

what i really want is to solve this issue as soon as possible. If anyone has a real tutorial, or a real tip that solve this issue, please share with us.

I do not know if it is relevant but my router is a netgear r6300v2

IMO, it is not that hard to apple to find some devices on market that have the issue in order to help them to solve it. And I could read many tips saying tht if you reset your network settings, it will fix the wifi issue. NO, IT WILL NOT SOLVE it, even in a new one IOS 8.1.1 which was just released.

iOS update 8.1.1 kicked my WIFI issues back into gear, they'd been on hiatus for a few weeks. And I also now have a few problems clicking on any links without trying about 50 times. WIFI just randomly decides to ask for home connections password, then keeps coming up with an 'incorrect password' error. Both my iPad Air and iPhone 6+.

WHen you move away from the N66U and it gets bad, can you tell if you're picking up more access points At that spot?  Just a theory I have after trying to debug this for weeks is that it's related to the device being in range of multiple access points that are crowding the channels...like it can't stay locked in on one and gets hung.  As mentioned above, I've had multiple SSIDs just in my own house.  Plus I can pickup up about 7 or 8 weak signals from neighbors.  When I instaled the new network hardware I made sure all my APs were on different channels.

AT work...this is even stranger.  They use Cisco wifi repeaters all of the place, with the same SSID. I was having the loss of credentials issue, drops and hangs severely at first.  The iPhone 6 would have so much trouble it would often just stay on LTE.  There are multiple external ssids I could pick up as well from other floors/companies. So at first you'd think this fit with the theory above.  But then the problem has all but disappeared there as well.  Same ios version 8.1.  I seriously doubt IT has done anything to the network to fix anything....it takes them almost a year to approve new desktop OS versions.  ??????

ANd then even stranger.  I have multiple IPhone 6s at work.  My personal phone is on Verizon, but I can take two others that are on ATT, same ios, and they would not exhibit the problems at all.  Come to think of it, they didn't have Bluetooth on and my phone always does from connecting to my car.

i Think the "fix" is so long in coming because there are way too many variables involved.  Anyway I seem to have gotten things "fixed" by changing an access point at home and messing with the channels used.  At work, it's a mystery of why it's improved...oh and I really don't think its a hardware problem because I had the identical problems with iPads and other phones that I had updated with ios8. They worked flawlessly before.

    I have solved it...

problem has has to do with iOS 8 timing out on busy wifi channels.

you can't change the default WIFI channel on Apple devices...

SO go to your router and change the wifi channel from AUTO to channel 2 or 3 (just don't choose 1, 6, 10 - I think these are default broadcast channels...

your poor Apple device is competing with all your devices in your house and the neighbours, we have 16 devices alone connected in our house let alone a list of about 30 wifi routers in our vicinity....

just ust don't forget to restart your devices after saving the change in the router and rebooting it...

all my devices are now flying and have been for the past 2 weeks without one dropout!!

no need to replace any of them

In my household we own three Iphone 5. After updating them to OS8, two of them connected to WiFi without problem. But the other one only connects when it is 1 meter o near to the router. This problem has not been fixed by any of the following OS8 updates, 8.1.1 inclusive. I have tried all recommended fixes on the third troubled Ipohoneo and I still have the same issue.  WiFi connection in that Iphone seems to be a lost forever capability.

This is interesting. I wonder if there are hardware differences that cause only certain iPhones of the same model to be affected by wifi issues. My affected devices were both of the 5s variety, one Sprint and one Verizon (connecting through AT&T MVNO Consumer Cellular). Problems vanished with 8.1.1. See my previous posts for additional detail (first was on p.78 or 79 of this thread).
