Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

OK but lets make a fiction now. If you bought a new Scion and new Focus (or made a recall to update the injection firmware) and both require from now a standard driver license to drive but you need to re-learn certain ways to operate it like mine car. You need to check  tire pressure regulary as they're specified at owner guide book It's like always but in this case you really need to check them or the car will stop and it will makes you nut

I'm not telling you that Apple is not wrong because they need to detect and tell you why our iPad communication to router stop to function after these updates.

I'm here to tell you what can be done until they decide or not to advance.

My issue was caused because I changed a default setting at my router and it was not causing any problem until now. The fault is mine.

2.4GHz band was set "Brazil" and 5GHz band was set "Mexico".

new iDevices probably need to operate with strict location settings (it doesn't require any changes on your router if it remains default) but don't ask me why because I'm not engineer or programmer, I only had read a post which a guy related his solution, a bit different than mine but both are related to router location settings.

Just want to help you to put your new baby to walk again.

That's tempting.  Samsung makes great devices.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have neither the knowledge nor the desire to start tinkering around trying to fix all my electronic devices.  And I shouldn't have to, just because of a software upgrade.

Me, too.  Multiple issues with performance, not all related to wi-fi.  I've been doing battle with Keychain since I bought a Macbook Air last year.  Seems like each OS upgrade makes everything less user-friendly.  This has always been a problem with Microsoft, and that is the main reason I switched to Apple.  Now where do I go?

OK then let I clarify my situation for you.

Imagine I'm now Crystianne (a lucky you) and call to a imaginary help center and had a support from a good man called Macfanta.

I tell Mr.Macfanta that a certain night I started the iOS 8 update, leave it finishing and went to sleep.

Next morning I woke up and tried to read my emails but the iPad tell I  lost the connection to internet.

Well, I tried the 2,4GHz SSID and was all fine (my router has  simultaneously dual band wi-fi).

from now this story have a happy or a sad ending.

The happy ending: Mr.Macfanta encourage me to check router settings, I find that I made some changes on location settings. I turn to router default values and made a boot on router. After this procedure the 5GHz band was functioning as always do. I'm very happy and go to share the solution at Apple Discussions forum.

The sad ending: I tell to Macfanta I'll not move any thumb to search the solution and will wait for another unsuccesful update (because your router still remain with changed default value) and will remain without internet (or without the fastest 5GHz and go to Apple Discussion reclaim faster internet after iOS update). I'm so sad and will remain at Apple Discussion thread like a ghost rider.

    * * *

    I pick the happy ending

This is my testimony. I really found a fast solution after read a post made by AD member called gazole Re: Re: iPad Air WiFi (5GHz) issues after iOS 8 upgrade

In my case the vilan was the router.

What you fail to realize with your fairytale is that the solution presented isn't even valid for anyone other than yourself and maybe this gazole person.  I don't even think a single router sold in the US has "country" settings.  So while we appreciate you trying to help....your fix is just that...a fairytale.

    My reply:

    >> COUNTRY IS SAME AS REGIONS: YOU CHOOSE A COUNTRY NAME...

    >> I'm from Brazil 90% of our gadgets are the same sold at US or Worldwide.

You will find COUNTRY OR REGION SETTING on all routers...

Ask any nerd WHERE he choose country name at router settings.

There is only one item (one for 2.4GHz and other for 5GHz)

You didn't read all my last posts. I uploaded a screen shot:

I only try to help you talking in english that obviously is not my main language.

90% of our gadget setup are in english.

then we strive much more than you to learn how the thing works.

We would a lucky guys if people come to our coutry foruns to help us writing in portuguese.

If you don't understand what I write I told you to go to gazole's post here: Re: iPad Air WiFi (5GHz) issues after iOS 8 upgrade

His solution is not necessary on my case but is related to same REGION (OR COUNTRY) setting.

Well then you never saw a "COUNTRY" setting at US routers...

I have an Apple Time Capsule but I don't use it's wireless.

Let show you it's Airport Utility screenshot...

    Oh wait... I read "COUNTRY"...

the solution I posted solved my IPad 3 issue after I had updated to iOS 8.1.1

million of people have the same device with the same hardware as mine

I don't care if your iPad doesn't have the same hardware than mine and it didn't solved your issue

You even don't know  there is a "country" setting at all routers worldwide...

I'll be satisfied if I can solve a single other iPad worldwide.

Excuse me but you NEVER shoud use "fail" on your reply about my testimony.

I'm in the US, and on my router the "Region" setting is set to "North America".  This setting is also grayed out and it won't let me change it.  With previous versions of iOS 8x, I had the same Wi-Fi slowness/disconnect issues that others are experiencing, but since I upgraded to 8.1.1, I no longer have Wi-Fi issues.

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't think your solution is going to resolve the issue for everyone, or anyone for that matter.  For some (and maybe for the majority, since the complaints in this thread have dramatically slowed down), 8.1.1 resloved the issue.  For others, they may need to wait for the next update.  In either case, this was (and probably still is for some) an issue with iOS  8.x, and trying to say that modifying your region setting is the magic pill is somewhat ridiculous.

I'm happy you think it worked for you, but it was probably 8.1.1 that fixed your problem, and changing your country/region forced you to reboot your router, which may have also helped.

For those of you still having problems, I would suggest that upgrading to 8.1.1 and rebooting your routermay resolve your issues... it did for me. If it doesn't, hopefully the next update will reslove the issue for everyone.

Changing the region in the us is blocked by the FCC. Because changing the region would give you access to other channels and other various settings blocked by the FCC. Once the router boots and it gets its IP it knows where it is and once it sees that your in the us and sets to the us.

If your router doesn't do this and you purchased it from a us retailer then lucky u. But dont be surprised if you get a knock on the door from the FCC if your using a channel you shouldn't at the power your also shouldn't have access too.

Hi Stanky you still don't understand what I wrote.

the nightmare comes on my iPad 3 AFTER I upgraded to 8.1.1

I had not any problem before this update.

about my solution, I told you many times that I DIDN'T CAME HERE TO SOLVE  ALL ISSUES

I JUST WANT TO SHARE A SOLUTION THAT SOLVES MY ISSUE AND BECAUSE A MILLION OF OTHER PEOPLE HAS THE SAME IPAD WITH SAME HARDWARE IT CAN SOLVE FOR THEM.

I said I'm satisfied if this solution solve ONE IPAD WORLDWIDE, I don't care if it don't solve for the people that reply me as I came here to defend Apple.

What was good to talk to you on your main language?

I saw people that can access to so much information IN ENGLISH and don't want to try to solve it.

    Excuse me but it's ridiculous.

English is not my main language but I'm here trying to solve as issue for someone.

    Hi Djraiu,

About "Regions" ou "Country" (on Apple Time Capsule)

I just replied to Dan Woo in response to Dan Woo because he wrote "there is no setting called "Country" at any US router" .

Listen: don't you understand that I'm not talking for you americans ONLY?

I write for WORLDWIDE APPLE CUSTOMERS, than the solution that solves my issue could be useful for them, I don't  intend to solve issues for US customers ONLY.

I'm writing in english only to talk for a lot of members worldwide.
