Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

This is clearly a bug.  But, what I don't understand is how it got through when Apple had thousands of people testing iOS 8 over many months.  It must have been added recently.

Okay, apple started a mac randomization with ios 8 to limit tracking of the devices.. I would bet 98% that this is what is going on and confusing our SOHO routers.. The device is generating fake mac addresses which confuses the routers. This explains why routers get bogged down and this explains the changing from 2.4 to 5 ghz will work for a little while. This would also make changing the DNS service a logical fix too (not too sure on that though)

This is just a thought, i'm not an expert. nor do I have my ipad to test at the moment but I wonder if going to QOS settings if you have them and setting up your idevice manually in your router will fix this. Unfortunately this wont fix it when your at mcdonalds or starbucks.

Hi- I too have WIFI issues. Spent an hour on the phone with Apple tech yesterday who did not seem to have a clue how to resolve this. Did admit it could be an OS08 system flaw. I cannot transfer anything from my IMac desktop iTunes to my iPad till it is fixed. What a pain.

I have an iPhone 6 Plus and compared to my previous iPhone 5 the wi-fi connection lags when refreshing apps such as the Facebook app, Instagram, or even certain iOS games.  Also, I experience a lot more apps crashing, sometimes I think its due to the portrait to landscape orientation switching.  I also experience 3rd party keyboards not appearing when I tap to enter text.  I then have to close what ever app I am currently in, and re-open it to get the text entry to show up.

I would be very nice to the rest of us if those of you have these problems would list your platform Apple, or PC, brand of modem, and it's age and if you  know the firmware loaded into it. We might just see a pattern.

I am personally having Zero problems

I have running an Airport Extreme router which I purchased back in August, it's software is up to date

I have a PC loaded with the best reason to go to an iMac ever compiled (operative word is "pile") Windows 8.1

I have the Airport Utility for the PC loaded.

Are there others with a newer Airport Extreme's having problems? How about other routers?.

Hope that Apple will resolve this issue ASAP !!!

Its not just affecting 5 ghz network as for me it's fine on this band. It's the other way around. There are glitches whatever way we spin it. Maybe it's the Mac randomization thing causing. God knows, way above my head but they obviously tinkered with wifi to a great detriment when it didn't need tinkering. They are trying to re invent the wheel again. Apple way or no way. Wish they would leave things alone. Their arrogance amazes me. Of course they 'never see any problems' do they! Why can't they acknowledge they have made a gaff

First of all the problem is not with our Macs.  They did not receive an upgrade, except for iTunes (iTunes Sync no longer works on most devices).

We know that our iPhones and iPads were working fine before "upgrading" to iOS 8, and have had some specific problems (among others) with Wifi connections ever since "upgrading".  We are talking about thousands of people all around the world with many types of machines.  The only common denominator is iOS 8 and that is where all attention should be focused.

After upgrading my iPad Mini Retina my wifi connection problems seem to only occur when I use the 5Ghz signal of my router (Netgear N900) So far my 2.4 Ghz seems to work. In addition, when searching for wifi networks, the iPad does not find any other networks, although I have guest networks in my house. However, my iPhone 5 (also on iOS8) has no problems so far on either network. I had them next to each other and the iPhone could find all networks.

read this, i wasnt saying macs as computers

    Randomized Wi-Fi addresses

When you’re out running errands with your phone in your pocket, Wi-Fi hotspots have the ability to track your movements and behavior by scanning your Wi-Fi MAC address. A MAC address is a string of characters that uniquely identifies your device on a network. With iOS 8, we’ve introduced an innovative feature designed to protect your privacy by randomizing your device’s MAC address when the device is passively scanning for Wi-Fi networks. Because your MAC address now changes when you’re not connected to a network, it can’t be used to persistently track you. This is in line with Apple’s industry-leading effort to do away with persistent identifiers, and is unique to iOS devices.

Im pretty sure that this is what is causing this problem. when your device is scanning for location it scans the wifi networks thus randomizing your MAC address and confuses your home router which then trys to give your phone another IP address which then bogs down your network and router.

Now how do you turn this off! That is the fix!

After IOS 8 update, my WIFI was flakey on iPad Air and Mini Retina.

Switching from 5ghz to 2.4ghz seems to have straightened this out.

The router is a NETGEAR WNDR3400v3.

Sorry, you are quite right.  The MAC randomisation might well be creating the problem.  Why did this problem not show up with all the beta testers over the past few months?

Since the randomisation was developed to avoid tracking, shutting off Location Services, or certain parts might make sense to stop the network confusion.

From what I have read, it wasn't included in the beta. I could be wrong.

Same here: I have to be very careful as iPhone 6 Plus keeps dropping connection pushing me back to 3G. Seems to have issues with maintaining a good connection. Same issue on my 5S: totally fine with iOS7, it dropped connections right after the update. So it must be on the software end... Also can hardly find  the access point (takes forever) then shows full signal strength, which doesn't add up.
