Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

    NO and NO.

    everytime I repeated

    "MY ISSUE"

    with "MY IPAD3"

    with "IT"S HARDWARE"

because I know that even the same iPad XX can be produced with different hardware inside at different Foxconn or whatever iPad plants at China.

YOU and others here think that I came here with the solution for ALL ISSUES, ALL IPADS, ALL HARDWARE and WORLDWIDE.

I presented Gazole's post on every topic and he said he is from RUSSIA and solved HIS issue in his country.

Probably you didn't read his and my posts as needed with details, this caused your misunderstand.

People didn't read all the posts or the links we posted.

Another guy came to AD and wrote:  "Reseting the network will fix all issues". Why you didn't write him the same, I never wrote "ALL ISSUES" like him.

    Good for you!

This issue is very annoying because our cases are exactly the reverse.

The 8.1.1 update was the starter of my headaches, not the solution as yours

I'll post here my iPad specs

    iPad model: A1316

    Hardware model: J1AP

    Hardware machine: iPad3,1

Interesting, my father's iPad have a bit similar issue you related: it has PW rejection at 2.4GHz band but can connect to 5GHz band. I don't know if this is a software case because he drops a lot his iPad and maybe damaged the hardware. The wi-fi signal sensitivity drops too. It can't connect far from the router.
I guess we'll have to wait now for a class action lawsuit to recoup money lost to data overage fees incurred because wifi has been rendered useless with iOS 8.  Apple is valued at $700 billion...and their latest innovation is garbage.  I don't get it.
Finally someone said it. I am waiting for this as well I don't know how to start one but ills joining

Even with all the updates, still having WiFi issues under IOS 8.x.  Not an issue  under IOS 7.1.2.  Multiple IOS devices in my home and all exhibiting the same issue.  Most blatantly obvious when I have applications that indicate I have no WiFi connection even though IOS shows full WiFi (3 bars) in the tool bar.

Have done all the recommendations many have posted, with no positive results.  Wife's IOS 7.1.2 iPhone 5S has not been upgraded yet and is the source device that shows the issue is with IOS 8.

To paraphrase IOS 8.x WiFi issues:

    1. Reduced range of 802.11x WiFi.

    2. False positive (shows full WiFi connectivity when actual status is weak to no WiFi)

    3. Automatically connects to GSM phone data network when WiFi status is less than optimum (most of the time).  This eats up my data plan.  Not a problem under IOS 7.x.

    But how should one complain?

If you were to add up the man hours that people worldwide have spent trying to diagnose this issue it would be a terrifying number;  and I am not talking about Apple employees because I have seen no evidence that even one Apple employee is looking at this.

For me I do not intend to spend any more time or money trying to work out what's going wrong. I think all our focus should now be on bringing evidence of the symptoms in front of people who can fix the problems or encourage / force Apple to fix the problems.  I would be grateful for suggestions from anyone who understands the law in the US or the mass media in the US of how best to achieve this.   To be honest the press embarrassment is likely to be the most effective route.  I hate saying this because for 25 years I have been advocating "buy Apple" as the best IT advice you can give.   But the policy of "never admitting anything is wrong" has passed its sell-by date.

I have three pictures which illustrate a concurrent state of affairs and which are a steady state on my iPad when I am at home.  By steady state, I mean that it stays like this for prolonged periods of time during which it is basically useless since the vast majority of my use requires internet access.    Just for clarity, other devices, such as my iMac have perfect (wired) internet connectivity at 100 Mb/s at the same time;  so there is nothing wrong with the internet service.  My view is that these pictures illustrate a state of affairs that would be impossible if Apple's software and hardware were working properly.  I have tried many of the reset fixes (even that contained in the entertaining correspondence about the region setting - Macfanta, please stop!)

Picture 1 shows the Airport Utility display.  You will note that all base stations are reported to be operating normally but there is no connection to the internet. The three second level base stations are wired and extending the network using the same SSID.  In order to draw this picture of my network, the iPad has definitely achieved some sort of connectivity to one of the base stations, despite the next picture.

    1.jpg

Picture 2 is what the Wifi Settings tab shows for a prolonged period (sometimes 10s of minutes) as the iPad (sitting right next to the base station) attempts to connect properly.  Note the spinning "please wait" symbol.

    2.jpg

Picture 3 is my use of the IMDB app.  You will note that there is no wifi symbol in the top left hand corner.  Any use of the app to connect to the internet fails.

    3.jpg

This problem began the moment I upgraded to iOS 8 and none of the subsequent versions have altered this behaviour.

I am so fed up that I have an IPhone that can do exactly the same as a £25 phone from ASDA, that I am travelling to Liverpool on Friday.     An Apple 4s Iphone that is basically useless other than phone calls and texts.

    It's disgraceful really.

I have the standard wifi problems, coupled with apps crashing and Safari being truly awful.  It wasn't too bad on IOS 8.1 but 8.1.1 truly took all the fun out of using my ipad2.  Strange how a bug fixing, performance enhancing update can be so detrimental.  If I didn't know better I'd think that Apple programmers are a bunch of incompetent, amateur clowns.

oh, my iMac is also wrecked thanks to Yosemite.

    Well done Apple.

I have an iPhone 5s. Since upgrading to 8.1.1, I have an odd WiFi issue. I have NOT read the entire 91 page discussion, so forgive me if it's somewhere here.

    1) My WiFi works fine from my Airport Extreme.

    2) My WiFi appears to connect from my Airport Express, but does not. I get just about 0 data transfer speed.

    3) This does NOT happen on my wife's 5s running iOS 8.1 (or mine before upgrading). Only on my newly upgraded 8.1.1, and only when in rage of the Express.

I got the same problem on my iphone 5 after updgrading to ios 8, but I found the solution. Go to the setting ▶️ wifi, then against the network you are used to use press i on the right hand side then select FORGET THIS NETWORK, then reselect the same wifi you are used to use and enter the password if needed. Yes it is mess. They should rectify many things !

After trying everything else, which did not solve the slow wifi problem for my iPad air 2 running 8.1.1, I disabled the "auto" channel selection in my wifi router and manually selected channel 11

This appears to have solved the problem and my wifi connection is now as fast as in my windows PC.

It could be any other channel I guess, but as long as it works with channel 11, I didn't experiment any further.

The wifi is stable now and works well for the last couple of days, so I think it is worth trying if nothing else has worked for you.

Well this is going to cost a fortune in lost sales for Airplay speakers and the like this Christmas.

I've just decided not to buy any airplay related presents this year as airplay is unusable on my home and office networks since ios 8.1.1

sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it works and then cuts out. really annoying since my entire home entertainment set up is airplay based!!

I Have an iPad 2 and the wifi on it has become pathetic. I took it to the store and they failed to mention what is an obvious problem. Since upgrading to 8.1.1 I am having multiple problems typing, emailing, etc.  Very buggy and apparently no concern from Apple.  My next tablet will be an Android.

I also have my 2.4Ghz network set to 11 and my 5.0Ghz is set to 161.  Before 8.1.1, I had the typical problems listed throughout this thread and had to set both networks to lower channels and they were still somewhat flakey, but now the higher channels seem to work fine and they have better range.

I hope you're right and apple takes a financial hit from this as they have to stop releasing substandard, untested software and more importantly start treating their customers with a bit of respect.  Sadly the only way I think they're going to learn that respect is when it hits their profits.
