Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I have the same exact issue after updating to iOS 8.1.1 , I have tried every thing mentioned in this discussion with no luck.

but I have found this solution video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYeYLUn9nj0 , it seems that the Wi-Fi is working fine now for me. you may want to give it a try.

Thanks for the link, I guess if this works then each time you connect to a different WIFI system you will have to make these changes.

Come on Apple, premium products with premium prices think we expect more than second rate updates!

Changing the DNS lookup server isn't going to make any difference to the current ios 8.1.1 wi-fi problem !

It does seem unlikely doesn't it!

However I have been in IT for over 30 years and have seen some really strange results from the most innocuous changes.  Changes that you would never credit be anything to do with the reported fault.

Don't paint yourself into a corner, view any suggestion with equal credence and view the results based on outcome not what you believe has any effect.

Like you my first thought DNS has no relevance to a WIFI connection and why would it?

The cost of making the changes is zero, so why not try?

So, I journeyed to the Liverpool Apple Shop.   They disputed my claims that numerous 4s users on this forum had lost heir WIFI after the recent IOS upgrades.   They offered to fix my phone though, there and then, for the sum of £159.   Or, recycle my phone for £75.

I will not pay £159.   This problem was caused by Apple!

I shall never buy another product from this company again.  Disgraceful!

    Lodds, yes and no.

I posted a rather angry rant on these boards once and accused Apple of not caring. They took it down. They never addressed that problem, and I don't expect them to address this one directly either. Hopefully, they'll see the issue and fix it in their next update. But you never know.

Oh well, I got a minute of crash free browsing now it's business as usual.  At least if I'd purchased ringtones from iTunes and had them removed I could sleep soundly knowing that issue was resolved.

Apple, you are so useless it's not funny anymore.

I had the same issue with the same router (Netgear Nighthawk R7000).  Before I got the iPhone, I had DISABLED the QoS on router because I read issues with AirPlay.  Fast forward a few weeks and I got the iPhone 6.  The WIFI would be extremely slow.  I went to the Apple Store but they could not replicate the issue.  I remembered that I had messed with the router (QoS) so I enabled the QoS.  Voila! My iPhone 6 now connects to WIFI with blazing speed!

    To Enable QoS:

    Go to your router settings,

Advanced -> Setup -> QoS -> Enable WMM

Enable both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz

Well, it isn't fixed yet.  I just updated my iPhone5, to the new IOS 8.1.2 and it keeps telling me my network password is wrong.  Same password as my range extender, and that worked for a few minutes before it dropped.  This is really frustrating. What a mess!

I have BT Infinity, I moved from Virgin cable (wrong move) I have had nothing but problems with them and their QOS.  Phoned them last Friday and got an Indian lady on the phone (out sourcing).  After 40min or so it turned out that she had not understood what "WIFI keeps dropping" meant she thought i couldn't connect to WIFI and was trying to explain to me how to connect to the hub.  I was getting quite frustrated at this point and made my thoughts known to her.  She insisted on telling me that she understood English.  With that I advised her they she may understand the words of English but she didn't understand the English language. Anyway after she remotely switched off the WIFI leaving her connection disconnected I had enough.

2 hours had passed and not got anywhere.  In tears she advised me that her supervisor would be phoning me which he did and I eventually got a new router being delivered.

I have since switched of 5GHz option and updated both iOS on my phone and iPad the WIFI appears to be working okay.  My wife has not updated iOS on her devices and like mine all appears okay at the moment.

At the start of this saga i do remember switching off 5GHz before and this had no effect, certainly no noticeable effect anyway, so I switched it back on again.

I await with eagerness if my connection remains stable.

Late to the party here but our home router is set to both 2.4 and 5GHz wifi bands. 2 x iPad air 2, 2 x iPhone 6 plus and iPad mini (2nd gen) all displaying same wifi issue. Basically a device will connect and all will be fine for a few minutes and then with no discernible changes within the building, and with full wifi signal displayed, the device will lose wifi connection. Disabling wifi for those devices with cellular connectivity reveals the sites or apps themselves are working fine - it's solely the wifi issue. And the fact other devices might work at that moment when one fails shows its not really a wifi issue at all. It's an iDevice/iOS8 issue.

And we are having same trouble on Yosemite too.

"It just doesn't work" should be Apple's new mantra.
