Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Completely agree w/ ffcphone.  We have an iPhone 5, 5c, 6 and iPad Mini (2nd Gen) all on iOS 8.1.X and all experience the same exact problems.  Can't connect to wireless networks, forgotten passwords, extremely slow throughput if/when connected, etc.  All non-Apple devices have no issues at all.  We've tried every gimmick fix suggested...forget network, reset network settings, disable Wifi location services and on and on.  If we could do something to get it to work we would.

And this is not just on our home network where we can try to adjust radio frequencies, QoS settings, or whatever else.  This happens at Starbucks or at work on Cisco Aironet AP's, Ubiquiti AP's, Pepwave, etc.  It's not a router or network issue.  It's an iOS 8 issue.  Enough of the madness.  Bring back iOS 7.

Hi! I have iPhone 4s 16gb. My Wifi and Bluetooth stop working after update to iOS 8. On iOS 8.1 it worked for about week and and a half and then WiFi turned grey, bluetooth keeps loading. Tried everything Apple suggested to fix this, none of this worked. After network reset, complete restore and etc wifi is greyed and can't use it at all. I'm sure it is software issue because on ios 7 everything was just fine. The only fix that helps, but it's temp. is to put device in plastic bag in a fridge for about 5-10 min. Then when I power iphone wifi is working on full bars, bluetooth also... It last for about 20 min and then it's gone.

So I believe there is some software glitch regarding to recognize wifi when reaches certain temperature degree. I see there are thousands of user with the same problem, I repeat -  it can't be the hardware problem at the same time all over the globe affecting all devices, it is ridiculous. I installed latest update 8.1.2 and nothing changed, the stated  problem remains. How and where can we post this problem so Apple take an action to fix this bug? I know forum is not the place where tech.and dev. teams are reading this bug reports.

Please share some info, this really needs to be fixed.

We have the same issues with our iPhone 6. We've updated to 8.1.2 and still our Wi-Fi does not work properly. I have reset network settings, turned off Wi-Fi Network Settings, tried rebooting phone, modem, and everything short of tossing this phone out the window. Tired of using cellular data to check email, browse, etc. Apple EMPHATICALLY needs to address this significant Wi-Fi problem.

After updating my iPad mini to iOS 8.1.1 I cannot find any wifi network, my other devices display ~20 networksat home to connect, this one nothing.

I bought this iPad mini 4 months ago for my kid and the screen is cracked and Apple store refuses to fix/replace my iPad mini saying that the wifi problem is because of cracked screen and iOS 8.1.1 doesn't have any bugs with wifi.

Apple provides very bad support for this iOS 8 issues, Tim Cook and the apple management should have the dignity to accept this failure, instead of trying to hide it and refuse the issues, like overnight update 8.1.2 without any release notes.

I feel like the only solution is if apple lets us roll back to Ios7 or earlier. Ios 8 is NOT stable. I would have never upgraded but I made the mistake of getting the Iphone 6 plus. I should of stayed with my iphone 5 that I had refused to upgrade. it worked just fine. Once I got a new iphone, I had no choice,  it came with ios 8 which is just not working right. The Bluetooth on the phone is ridiculous, it cuts in and out, drops calls and I feel makes driving unsafe. I work in home care and need to be able to talk to people hands free and was absolutely able to with my old phone.

WiFI also is a problem. Since facetime stopped working on anything pre Ios7, I upgraded my ipads and now it is not stable and loses its wifi off and on and that never happened before. I bought my mom an ipad so I could stay in touch with her and be able to see her and it no longer works. Her facetime doesn't work on Ios7. I mistakenly thought an Ipad would be the easiest platform for a not tech savvy elderly woman. I have wasted thousands of dollars getting all these devices. its a shame this used to be a great company. I give up and as soon as I can afford it will be moving on. I realize any device can have its problems but this is just so disappointing and there is never a helpful response.

If apple is unable to fix this or refuses to let us rollback to an Ios that works, they should allow us to return our newer devices as they no longer work as advertised. maybe then I can afford a device that works as it should.

    Write to Apple directly at:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Since this is a user forum, Apple doesn't seem to be monitoring it.

After giving them feedback it’s possible that you wouldn't get a response from Apple either, but at least they will have your feedback on the record.

    Completely agree with ffcphone too.

My ex-flatmate had issues with his iPad, even on iOS 7. It would constantly lose the WiFi connection and sometimes inexplicably ask him for the wireless password.

When I update apps at home on my iPhone 4S, it constantly tells me "Mobile data is switched off for [app_name/App Store]". I know it is switched off, because I switched it off. Even when I am sitting right next to the wireless router the wireless icon on my phone can switch to 3G, then back to wireless, back to 3G, etc, while updating apps.

While using iTunes on my PC to download iOS update 8.1.2 today, using a *wired* connection: "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone... The network connection was reset."

Allegedly, "The iOS 8.1.2 update is just 16.6MB in size for those already on iOS 8.1.1" although elsewhere it says: "under 30MB". However, it took twelve minutes for iTunes to download it successfully the second time, on a 20 Mbps line that works at speeds up to 16 Mbps (tested today). It should take about 15 seconds to download 30 MB at 16 Mbps.

    These are not good signs.

Same here, 8.1.2 'seems' to have fixed things for my 5s and ipad 4.

Its worth noting that 8.1.1 was the only time I had the wi-fi problems and its the only time I've ever done an ios update over the air ?

Well, I am having the problem. I stayed on 7.something for a long time before finally updating to 8.1.2. Now, I can't connect to wifi! Tried everything but nothing works. Restored, everything. It's not the wifi, because my iPad mini does connect. It's not the password. It's the iPad 3 I updated to 8.1.2. So frustrating!

Apple may not be monitoring this thread, but other websites are. I found this thread through a report from Forbes.com. I was trying to find a solution to my problem! So, it would be best if someone started paying attention at Apple.

Yeah, I'm still having the problem with my 5.  I don't recall having a lot of issues with ios 8, but when the dot's started, I started having them.  Maybe I just didn't notice.  I have noticed that I don't have much of an issue at my office where I sit about 3 feet from my router, and other networks are less available.  At home, I have a router and a range extender.  I wonder if some of the issue is the iPhone/iPad being confused, and always looking for another connection.  I haven't tried turning off automatic connection, which would be really irritating, but maybe I'll try that.  Maybe it's being confused by the router, vs the 5G router, vs the router-xt, vs the 5G router-xt..  What confuses me, is that software will tell me i'm not connected, and then I look at the settings window, and it says I am connected.  Very confusing!

I called Apple last night after having no wifi connection available since upgrading to 8.1.2 either. They told me that they had received NO REPORTS of this issue (despite being widely reported and complained about all over the internet and this thread now being 94 pages long!!!!!!) and suggested that it was a hardware fault which I should send my phone off to rectify and pay for!! I spent over 3 hours trying every reset / re-install possible but had absolutely no luck. I'm furious.

This is utter rubbish and as a multi billion $ company who are treating their customers like fools. No more apple products for me!!

I have spoken with a Apple rep in regards to this exact situation.  I have an iPhone 6 with 8.1.2 and I have a similar situation to what your phone has exhibited.  The Apple rep gather information from my phone and I provided logs to him both from my personal notes on the situation and from a wifi profile that he put on my phone.  I will say Apple does not about this as they are gathering information and they do read the forums because that is how he knew I had a problem with this wifi connection.  My hope is that with the information they gathered from my phone and gathered(ing) from others they release an update.  This is not a hardware issue as I already had my new iPhone 6 exchanged at an Apple store and the new one they gave me has the exact same problem.  So again, this is not a hardware issue but a software issue.

I too am pretty close to loosing trust in Apple and their product and if these issues do get corrected in a timely manner, I have no problem changing to an Android phone or a Windows phone.  However I will give them some time to have this issue fixed.
