Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

hello. Is there someone in this group that has iPhone 4s and managed to greyed wifi on iOS 8?  I am using latest update from itunes and my wifi is still greyed out. I did complete restore and still my wifi is greyed out. On iOS 7 wifi is working fine so it is not software issue in my case.

    Thanks

I spent the better part of two days debugging the problem with my iPhone 4s accessing wifi with the  8.1.1 and 8.1.2. Specifically with the meraki MR16 wireless access point. Strangely enough I had a similar problem with my Windows 7 laptop (Dell Lattitude E6520 with a DW1501 Wireless-N WLAN mini card). The short story to the resolution, at least for me, required resetting of the wifi channels for both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz radios to 11 and 161 respectively. It's been mentioned a few times in this thread that the IOS releases since 8.x have problems with wifi channels in auto mode. That appears to be the case from my experience.

Which only helps in one setting.   There needs to be a permanent fix and

Apple  needs to  take responsibility, not brush it off on their customers.

I understand that some people have issues with routers, but my main concern is "greyed wifi icon" and no option to turn wifi  on in settings. As I stated before this came along with update to ios 8.x.x. Did you had the same problem? Or some one else in this group and manage to fix it. Since I can't restore to ios 7 through iTunes I found other ways to go back to ios 7 so I can be sure that my hardware is ok and on ios 7 wifi is running fine, when I restore my iphone 4s to brand new ios 8.1.2 wifi is greyed out.. This is very frustrating since this is not a cheap phone, and Apple is not "some new beta corporation". I find this very disappointing.  I hope new update will fix this problem. On the other hand, why don't they leave an open option for rolling back your iOS to what ever serve your needs, since obviously iOS 8 is written for new iDevices. Of course there is a big  chance that some older phones/tabs won't work as new ones.

The greyed out icon would appear to be the firmware not recognizing the wifi hardware at all.  That particular issue wasn't occurring in my case, I could always detect the SSID, I just couldn't authenticate to them for the life of me. My model number is MD377LL/A

From the general tab, about, my 4s displays the Wi-Fi hardware mac address. Does yours show anything ?

Nothing at all. When I go into:  settings - wi-fi I can't move slider to activate wi-fi so I believe that you are right when you say - quote: "The greyed out icon would appear to be the firmware not recognizing the wifi hardware at all"

I searched through the Internet and I've noticed that a lot of people have the same problem as I do, especially on iphone 4s running new ios 8.

That would definitely fall under a vendor issue, however it gets a bit complicated as the phone is provided by the carrier and serviced by the vendor "Apple".

It's the Apple update that's broken the wifi functionality, the carrier will disclaim all responsibility and push it onto either you or Apple.

Apple in turn will probably push it back on the carrier, and it will continue to spin until the ultimate heat death of the universe.

Unfortunately there's no easy way to obtain, or reload the 7x firmware since Apple is no longer signing that revision.

Jailbreaking the phone would be necessary, and DMCA forbids that.

Technically there is NO solution, unless Apple fixes their firmware.

    That may take a while

Switching the DNS to Google's server does not help.  What happens is that when you reboot you get a new lease and as before it will work for a while and then it will revert to slow speeds again.  I will post in great detail later today but what I have discovered after 5 days of work and perhaps as many as 12 hours on the phone with Apple Care Level 2 is that any change from one router to another or any change in the router from one band or one channel to another restores the good connection but after a few hours (2-12) the same old slow connection comes back.  At the moment I have 3 access points live in my house and all I have to do is switch to a different one and speeds return ok but if I leave the device (MacBook Pro, 2 iPad Airs, 2 iPhones) on that AP then it will revert to slow speeds after awhile.  There is clearly an issue with iOS and also OSX (but less so with OSX).  I also have 2 Dell PCs running old Windows 7 and they work perfectly with any AP all the time.  In over a week now of testing I always and I mean every single time without fail get 14-15+ Mbps with the Dells (on a nominally 15 Mbps) using OOKLA Speed Test whereas all the iOS and even the Mac falter after a few hours on any AP.  I have connected to my neighbors Comcast xfinity ISP to make sure it is not my U-verse (could not be since the Dells always work) and the problem occurs there also.  I have also installed a different speed test app on 2 of my iOS devices (Speed Smart) to make sure there was nothing wrong with the OOKLA App but Speed Smart reports the same.  BTW I am on my third iPhone as 2 of them failed, hardware wise.  I am beginning to feel that Apple hardware / software is not reliable.  My wife had an 11 year old Dell that was retired due to an obsolete slow processor but it worked flawlessly through 11 years with no failures or serious issues.  Our current Dells are 3 1/2 years old (on same Wi-Fi also) and I have never seen any connectivity issues like I see with Apple.

Hello! About a week ago I started having wi-fi problem with my iPad Mini Retina 16GB updated to iOS 8.1.2. I have a 10mb (download) internet connection and I don't have any kind of problem with my PC, laptop and 4 smartphones, all connected to the same wi-fi.

However, the connection is too unstable only in my iPad: sometimes I get real 10mb download, sometimes I get only 0,50mb, sometimes I don't get nothing at all! I tried to restore internet settings, but it did not solve the problem...

Does anyone have the same problem and know how to fix it? Thank you and sorry for my very bad english!

Hi, I have the 4s and don't have the greyed out wifi, I can turn mine on and off. Despite this, even when it's 'on' the phone can't detect any wifi signal from any router / source so even if you get around the greyed out issue chances are you still won't get a connection. Apple really need to sort this issue out as I now can't send or receive emails, am struggling with text messages and also can't pick up voicemails due to having used all of my data allowance from my provider.

It's infuriating that they refuse to recognise the issue despite it clearly affecting so many customers. One of the worlds biggest companies selling hardware which can't connect to wifi? What a joke.

Salvo, no problem with your English whatsoever.  I am sorry but you have no options to solve your problem until #$%& Apple decides to fix iOS 8.1.2 and issues 8.1.3 which hopefully will take care of the problem, emphasis on hopefully.  I am a PhD Engineer (sorry, not trying to brag, just saying that I am familiar with networking and computers, some would call me a techie).  I have spent over a week on this issue as I mentioned on my previous posts and all you can do is go to your router and change the channel or band (does not make any difference what you change) or if you have a second router then go to it.  What you will find is that the change, any change, will restore your connectivity with higher speeds but only to drop again after 2-12 hours.  Then if you change again all ok for a little while.  Note that as I have mentioned before I have two Dell PCs on Windows 7 and they consistently every single time show perfect speeds and connectivity using OOKLA Speed Test and my problem is limited to my 5 Apple devices.  I was told by an Apple Care Senior Level 2 rep that the Engineering/Development Team is swamped.  Tim Cook should devote less money to hype events like the October introduction of the iMac 5K and more money to the Engineering/Development team but I am not holding my breath.  As long as the Apple store is full of customers, marketing will be more important than performance.

Guys for weeks I had experienced problems with both my MacBook and iOS 8.2 kept loosing connection.

The changes I made may not cure all, but all I can report is that it has worked for me.

I asked BT to supply me with a new infinity Router because disabling the 5GHz WIFI option only worked for short periods of time and my wife PC was also starting to have network issues.

Having received and installed the new router and disabled the 5GHz setting and all my devices are now okay, and have been for some weeks.

As I say this worked for me, it may or may not work for you

Based on your feedback I will do the following:

At the moment I am connecting ok with my iPhone and iPad at 13-15 Mbps.  At some point today one or the other or both will falter and will give me a sub 1 Mbps speed.  At that time I will immediately got to my Cisco Linksys Dual Band router and disable the 5 GHz band and then immediately test again to see if it makes a difference.  If it does this would only be a temporary solution until $#^% Apple fixes 8.1.2.  The 5GHz is very desirable for audio visual equipment.

I know, very frustrating. I posted my wifi issue in main iOS 8 WiFi section and the last reply I've got was that I am the only one that has WiFi problem, that the problem is fixed by last update from itunes and that the problem is in my router, although I clearly stated that my WiFi is greyed out. I managed to solve greyed wifi icon by using nonconventional method which I found on YouTube, but the response to what I did to fix my phone had "negative response", so to speak. My intentions were well-intentioned , I wanted to draw attention to the possible glitch between software and hardware..

I hope that new update will fix this, because even today I can see that there are thousands ip4s users on ios 8 still having wifi problems, among other idevices. I have a couple of android phones that are "by some standards and price range " way behind iphone but I never had any problems with them when I use WiFi and Bluetooth.
