Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Since I bought my iPad Air, I've been having problems with the wi-fi connectivity within my appartment. No problems at work. Now that I updated to iOS8 I am having the same issues with my iPhone 5S. But the disconnects only occur when I try to use streaming services like Youtube or Twitch. The wi-fi symbol in the upper left corner just changes to LTE and the phone says that mobile data is set "OFF". After I press OK, the wi-fi symbol is back again but the app or safari still doesn't want to start the video.

I tried to reset the networks, to ignore my router and setting it up again. Nothing worked so far. The router's firmware is up to date.

I just ordered another router just to make sure that this problem is made by Apple.

Same here on my iPad Air after upgrading to ios 8 the iPad continuously loses connection with the Timecapsule2 and the internet.

WIth the Airport app you can see that all the connections are lost ( triangle shown on internet, timecapsule and airport express icon).

Also the Airplay sign is not there.

After restarting the iPad it works for a short time. Then it crashes again.

Overall it feels laggy using the ipad.

Before upgrading everything worked as a charm.

I hope Apple can fix this.

Same problem here with iOS8 and my ipad mini and ipad mini retina (both wi-fi only versions).  With iOS8 after some time both devices loose connection over wi-fi, only restarting the device helps. Then after some time it stops working again.

I went back to iOS7.1.2 on both ipads and now they work fine again. So, we wait for 8.0.1.

Same here, wifi is gone worse, much worse than it was, and even the cellular connection is suffering, normally I always have 4G here in The Netherlands, and in the city always 4G, now I see sometimes 3G comming back.

wifi has a big problem, defenetly!

we all know that all apple devices are known for wifi problems, this is not a secret, but I never experianced so much problems.

I Have similar issues since the update. Wifi will start to work, the slow to a crawl the just can't reach anything on the internet any more. Rebooting May resolve, then within an hour its dead again, it's always connected to the wifi router, just can't resolve anything. This is for an iPad mini retina wifi.

    So far I've:

forgot got an dreaded the network in settings

    reset network settings in settings

    rebooted my router

restored a clean copy of iOS 8 from itunes

None of these changed anything. I have an open ticket with Apple and referred them to this thread. They had me complete the last 2 items on the list above.

After fter apple telling me it's not possible, I successfully downgraded my iPad back to iOS 7.1.2 on my own and have no more issues.

HHaving the same problem. Have iPad Air which I recently updated to iOS 8 and keep dropping wifi signal since the update. Works fine for a few minutes, then can be slow and unresponsive then drops. During this episode my other devices (those I haven't updated yet such as my iPhone) still access the Internet perfectly normally and at the usual speed. Eventually my wifi signal times out, disconnects and I get error messages. I turn off and on or and it recovers but often takes 2-3 attempts before it comes back.

DUring the the whole episode my other devices and Internet work fine (iPhone 5s, Apple tv and MacBook pro).

i Have BT homehub 5 with fully updated firmware.

i have tried on 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks and found no difference.

I Have reset my router, my iPad, my network settings, forgotten the network and reconnected, and all manner of combinations of these.

and what is autocorrect doing to my capitalisation? Sometimes duplicated letters, sometimes capitalising, sometimes not. I have deliberately left these uncorrected to demonstrate the problem.

APple need to fix this soon. None of the network settings available can fix it, and it shouldn't be my responsibility to be delving this deep into my router technical settings to sort out their error.

Same problem here. iPhone 5s updated to iOS8 loses wifi connection all the time and when it does have a connection the speeds are so slow I can't even stream audio correctly.

In need of a fix asap!

Similar problem with iPad mini (1st gen).

After upgrade, wi-fi works noticeably worse (signal level weaker where it was strong before, frequent interruptions of connectivity).

It took ~ 10 attempts to detect and connect to my router after upgrade.

    However, still usable.

YYes same here, well done apple. Not impressed.

its worst on iPhone 5 compared to my iPad 3. Both updated to IOS8 and wifi drops on and off like Christmas tree lights.

also wifi band seems to drop to a speeds IE 4mbit and 2mbit.

appke please contact or ask what other debug info you need. Happy to provide to help with your bug fix.

HHave done some testing and when I stand beside router with iPhone, I get perfect signal. Obviously. The issue presents itself from about 2 meters away and beyond. Exponentially getting worse the further from router. Sitting downstairs in the same seat same device same router yesterday prior to update. 30mbits. Today 0.5 mb its with intermittent loss of signal on device.

with an iPhone 4s in same seat on ios 7.1.2 30 mbits

my guess would be the sw driving the antenna mode switching and power amplification is defective.

APple ply can we please get a response at least acknowledgin this as a legitimate issue?

MMultiple issues here! Not only is my wi-fi all jacked up, laggy and unresponsive at times, but my keyboard does not work well either. Notice the spelling error at the front end of my post? Keyboard freezes (backspace freezes up, cannot correct misspelled words unless I delete it and start over), video is choppy, wake up is slow to respond, random crashes, Apps take much longer than normal to open, WI-FI is extremely slow. This IOS 8 software has turned my iPad into a paperweight. It's time for Apple to own up and fix this crap or start replacing everyone's electronics that they've killed by not performing their do-diligence testing IOS 8 before releasing it.

Not just Wi-Fi almost everything ruined after ios8, prolly with new update 8.1 expecting so many fixex but till then i hate APPLE and iOS 8..

    Lets count,

-Wi-Fi connections always lost even my 5S or iPAD mini retina, also my girls 5 lost connection..

-Airplay ***, coz of connection issues and lost Airplay button makes me sick..

-Safari Browsing speed, start up delay, and page refresh times insane, also video playback *** in safari too..

-NO more 2G-3G option, means insane battery drain and safari have highest battery usage after this..

-So many APP crashes (its ok after new ios btw hope would be better)

And if u have more, u can yell with me HATE NEW iOS!

I'm having the same problems also!  This update to IOS 8 is making my iPad Air and iphone 5s useless.  Is seems that everything that could go wrong with this update to iOS 8 did go wrong, from wifi problems to slowdowns ( even on cellular) to crashes.  I use to love my iPad Air until after this update to this iOS 8 CRAP!
