Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I have exactly the same problem with my iphone 6 and IOS 8.1.2.

"The phone will stop communicating with the router. It will show wifi, but just hangs as if it's not connected and eventually times out--- and it will stay that way unless I toggle the phone's wifi or reboot the router." as stevehc52 said.

The thing it's weird because I receive a notification and when I open simply the apps don't connect and the solution is to turn off/on the wifi.

I have a Linksys EA4500 (firmware updated) and I dont' have any problem with my old iPad. The same problem occurs at home.

Now here's a strange thing, I recently installed a TP-LINK WA850RE range extender and this extended the signal around my house but seemed to be constantly trying to establish a secure connection according to the paperwork supplied with the range extender. It definately seemed to work and I had a better wifi signal in all parts of my house, as this was the only thing that I added in the last couple of months and then updated to the latest IOS update I decided to unplug the range extender and every device has now been working well for the last 3 days so not sure if its a coincidence but I will try the range extender again at a later date so see if I can replicate the problem.

Glad I found this forum. I replaced my router thinking it was an issue with my internet hardware but it's quite obvious that the problem is with Apple. I have an iPad and an iPhone 5 that started to have this issue after upgrading to iOS 8. My issue is with the Internet being super slow. It's never consistent and my download speeds are extremely poor when I connect to my network. It's really frustrating having to troubleshoot and check a million things just to find out it's not you, it's the product. Still can't believe Apple hasn't fixed this issue yet.

Just in case this could help to Apple developers in charge of fixing the wifi problems !!

The iphone disconnects from the internet when I receive a notification. Latelly it happens very often (usually when I receive a notification on Whatsapp).

After receiving the notification I click on it to read the message and no connection... so turn off and on to read the message. This wifi **** s**ks.

I think most of us that have been on this thread from the start now all know that this problem doesn't affect everyone, any fixes are only temporary but ultimately don't fix the problem, its an iOS8 issue as iOS7 is still working without issues for those like my wife who haven't yet updated, and who can still sit next to me in the same house and have no problems at all whilst I sit here swearing at my iPhone dropping its connection time and time again.

So regardless of the comments of techies and fortunate people who don't have an issue, most of us know the score here.

For my part I'm so disappointed in apple for not publicly commenting on this issue, while speaking directly to their people on the phone, several have now told me directly they are well aware of the issues, yet still no one from Apple comments publicly. Their handling of it all has been a huge let down and not their finest hour.

So far as far as I'm concerned its cost them money, from my part at least, as I was buying the iPhone6 and the new iPad but now I won't be buying either and definitley won't be wasting my time even considering the iWatch when that hits the stores, as all this has destroyed my previous confidence in Apple, so in the long run if many more customer have done the same as me, these lost sales will only hurt Apple.

I may reconsider at some point if they rectify these problems, but having been following this thread from the beginning and experiencing the problems myself, I won't hold my breath, as now I'm even beginning to wonder if they have the ability to fix them seeing as they can't even come out and admit they are there to begin with.

In my humble opinion allowing people with any issues to roll back to iOS7 would have nipped all this in the bud, and maybe saved a lot of customers enduring many weeks and counting of poor performance with their previously fully working Apple products.

I have an iPhone 5C and have been having the wifi issue as well. My wifi drops every few seconds, as well as super sluggish internet, if I'm even lucky to be able to get on the internet, as its a luck of the draw situation if I can even connect to the server. Our wifi itself is perfectly fine, our laptop works flawlessly. My husband also has a 5C, he never did the 8.1.2 update and hasn't had an issue to speak of. I have done both a soft and hard reset, reset network settings. Called Apple and did an ios 8 restore through iTunes and still having the same issues, even when I didn't use iCloud to restore previous apps and what not from before the restore and still the same issue persists. Also my time has been messed up ever since the 8.1.2 update as well. Right now current Eastern time is 1:03pm, and my phone is telling me 11:11am, settings for time is correct, set to set automatically and on the New York time zone. I have an appointment with the Apple store day after tomorrow hoping for either a replacement phone or the issue to be fixed. This wifi dropping out isn't cool, it's already resulted in overages on the family plan my phone is on.

I totally agree.  Apple never admits major issues not just with IOS but also with OSX on their Macs.

Is there a way to downgrade on an iPhone that was updated to the ios 8.1.2? I feel like if I could just get back to any update before 8.1.2 I would be set. I have loved ios 8 up until this point, 8.1.2 has killed my wifi and messed my time up as well.

Unfortunately no, not any more. Apple stopped signing old firmwares so the only thing you can do is to wait for new update. Allegedly ios 8.2 and ios 8.1.3  are coming soon. I hope they fixed this wifi bugs in new updates, also having same problem as you.

What I found helped me the most with slow wifi issues:

Settings, turn off background refresh and handoff.

For me turning the above off has positively affected my iPad Air 2 experience.

    Do not miss either.

For what it is worth, there have been reports you can connect an lighting to a usb-camera-connection kit to a usb hub to a usb-to- ethernet connector to get an internet connection.

    see:

Re: How do I connect my iPad to the internet when only a wired connection is available? Thanks

AAnother day another page of complaints about Apple IOS8 wifi. I am using all my monthly data up way to fast because of this problem. If Apple truly read these pages or actually care why don't they just say so in a one line post. We are working on it or something.

It is actually getting worse maybe in getting lazy and I can't be bothered to reaet my phone and connection every day but I'm loosing patience.

I have got exactly the same problems for both wifi (poor performance and always discount) and time (stop running when the phone is in stand-by) after upgrading my iPhone 5c to the buggy 8.1.2!

I have visited Apple Store, they have done all the restore and diagnostics which could not fix it. Their solution is asking me to replace the phone for ~US$300 (out of warranty).

With so many users having the same issue, I don't believe it is a hardware fault and goes wrong at the same time. We do not know whether Apple is working on this issue and fix it in the future upgrades, or just force us to buy their newer iPhone 6. It is so frustrated.

The iPhone 6 has exactly the same wifi problem, so it's not a hardware problem it's an IOS problem.

I have the iPhone 6 64GB with exactly the same wifi problem with IOS 8.1.2

So don't buy the new iPhone 6 as a solution for your wifi problem.

    Regards.
