Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I ended up not going. I had a strong feeling I would get there and they would want me to pay for something (the nearest apple store is almost 45 minutes away, and I just didn't feel it was worth it), which obviously shouldn't happen as this is all on Apple. I agree, I REALLY, REALLY wish that they would pull the 8.1.2 update or pull ios 8 all together and/or allow us to go back to ios 7. I've stated this before and I'll say it again, my husband has a 5C as well. He NEVER did the 8.1.2 update and hasn't had an issue to speak of. Same deal with a cousin of mine (has a 5C) and my mom (has a 5S); they never did the 8.1.2 update and haven't had any issues. This whole not allowing us to revert back to ios 7 is crap. After this it makes me VERY, VERY hesitant to ever do one of their updates. Apple is just lucky that once I find a phone I like and get real familiar with, I tend to stick with it (I REALLY don't want to get a DROID). I doubt from this point on, I will ever install an update as soon as it comes out. I had originally done all updates as (or as close to as they were released) because I use iTunes quite often, and of course your software has to be the same version as iTunes, which automatically updates itself. I think after all this I'm going to look around on iTunes and see if there's a setting somewhere I can disable to keep iTunes from updating automatically.

Well... I heard from Apple and as I expected they were only interested in talking with me at a time of their choosing so there will not be any discussion with Engineering regarding this issue.  I had a lot of data to offer but I ended up wasting over two hours of my time for nothing.  As many of you have mentioned, the Wi-Fi difficulties have been going on for 4 months and Apple apparently is more interested in developing 8.2 for the iWatch than making 8 reliable.  Here is a link to a 9to5Mac article regarding the status of Apple software - draw your own conclusions...

I searched for Apple KB Article "HT202068" within this thread but didn't see it mentioned (may have done the search incorrectly).  Ground already covered?

Thanks for posting this.  My router is configured exactly as recommended by Apple but unfortunately to no avail.  I just ran 3 speed tests on my iPad with AirDrop and Bluetooth ON:  1.07, 0.97, and 0.09 (not a typo) Mbps.  I then turned Bluetooth and AirDrop OFF, ran 2 tests:  15.04 and 15.10 Mbps.

The Wi-Fi issue has been going on for over 4 months and Apple is either not willing or not able to fix it.  This is creating a lot of animosity among previous Apple fans as you can see from the 103 pages of posts here.  I hope Apple resolves this issue soon.  If not they are going to loose a lot of customers but perhaps they don't care as the Apple Store is always full.  Steve Jobs would have demanded a quick solution.

This Wi-Fi issue is KILLING iOS!  Jeez...  Has anyone tried "Speediest.net's" Ookla App?  It claims; "This release adds support for iOS 8 and resolves issues related to it".  Haven't myself but that's quite a claim.  It's free with in-app purchase for no ads.

The OOKLA App is what I use to test my speeds. Just to be sure that OOKLA was working well I also downloaded SpeedSmart and it reports about the same, very minor differences between the two.

Then again,,, "resolves issues related to it" probably refers to issues with the App - not iOS Wi-Fi...  Oh well...

I have tried everything I could find on this forum and all over the net but can't get back my wifi.  The only solution I can see from now on is to roll back my phone to iOS 7. iOS 8 is not made for iPhone 4s. In my opinion it is somehow affecting hardware to overheat after a while and that's why wifi is loading in search for network or is not recognized. It would be nice to hear from Apple what are the bug fixes in the upcoming update. I am waiting this fix from the day they released iOS 8.1. That is the day when I updated and when wifi issues emerged.

If any one had the same problem as I have please write some info what helped.

Were any of those routers the new "AC" type?  That is the only way my system appears to work.  It has been several days and no issues.  Before I could only go about 4 hours before WiFi would disconnect using my "N" router.

    danyboy2012,

I have a 4s as well with same issues since the day I "upgraded". I have improved, but not fixed wi-fi by going to settings - iCloud and turning everything off except 'Find My iPhone'. The result is wi-fi is useable more than it was before but I did that, but still in no way acceptable.

I also seem to have another bug which I don't recall happening before 8 - I have a habit of plugging in my iPhone to the charger when I get home but sometimes I don't get the usual 'ping' to indicate it's charging. The battery indicator may show plenty of charge but no lightning icon to show charging. If I then switch off the iPhone and back on again I find the battery is actually really low and then it starts charging.

    Hope this may help you.

    Thank you @ don_wan

I will try this as soon I manage to bring my WiFi back to life. It is still greyed out, I can't acess to it nor move slider to turn it on.

Regarding to charging part - I have the same bug. Sometimes I have to connect/reconnect my iphone before I see/hear sound that is charging. This bug came with update to 8.1.2 Before I never encounter this kind of a issue.

If there is someone else with greyed out wifi please share some info. Thanks

Well issue just returned after several days of being OK with my new "AC" router so I guess unless Apple fixes iOS we are out of luck.

Sorry to hear that. As I have mentioned several times Google "WiFried: iOS 8 WiFi", open the first item and scroll down to the section about Wi-Fi bounce and you will see why.

Look how "good" Wi-Fi my iPad Air has. I tried all but cannot fix this.
